This is a wonderful excursus into the life of Maasai people from childhood to old age, with traditions and their meaning explained beautifully with accompanying professionally taken photographs. Clothing, food, home building, herding, love, war and play are exemplified with some drawings and pictures and extensive commentary. I was particularly interested in the Maasai of Tanzania having met some on my recent trip to this amazing country. The author closes the book with a warning that this tribe is dying due to constant encroaching of the local people and tourist ventures. My experience however is that their wisdom and love of animals life and nature is still alive and kicking and really gives a perspective to people like me, urbanite and completely detached from the Earth life cycle. The date of publishing is however 1980 and it seems obvious to me that some of the rituals and traditions described may already have died in the last 40 years. The upside is that there are many educated Maasai now that are in Parliament and elsewhere fighting for their way of life to continue.

I don't know an extent of a scientific depth this work provides but it's definitely broad and informative for s reader not seeking special knowledge of Maasai but historic and ethnographic data, which is picturesque enriched with drawings and beautiful photos from the site in Africa folks inhabit.

picked this up at recycled books and i love all things africa. the passage of life as seen by the masaai with excellent full color photographs. the author is masaai and offers the best point of view of one of the "endangered species" of people on earth.

Sumptuous photography, fascinating, comprehensive and informative text. Very well put together, a real treat to savor. A wonderful, if poignant chronicle and documentation of a disappearing culture.
