This is the true story of one of ancient Rome’s most notable citizens. Germanicus Julius Caesar of the Julio-Claudian dynasty born on May the 24th of the year 15 B. C.His mother was Antonia the Younger who doted on him and could not help but feel that he was a child that would one day merit a great future. His father was Nero Claudius Drusus who had been on campaign as a Roman General in Germania. He had high hopes for his new born son who would be later named Germanicus as an extension and in memory of his father’s past campaign and experience.Germanicus soon found fame on growing up. He was active as Quaestor in his first campaign in the Illyricum and Dalmatia war which flared up as a rebellion against Rome. There he saw the impact that bloody war could rage against legionary and civilian. He eventually married the love of his life, Agrippina the Elder, granddaughter of the Emperor Augustus. But soon he was to be dragged as Rome’s most senior General into the vast forests and swamps of Germania, where Varus and three of Rome’s elite legions had previously been lost, including their eagle standards. He was destined to meet Varus’ opponent, the German barbarian Arminius. And was soon to meet him in the bloodiest battles of all time. It would be a case of victory or death. If things went well then Germanicus could earn his name and maybe deserve a triumph. And perhaps become the greatest Roman General of them all. Only blood and the clash of swords on shields would tell.
