On the unlikely day when an embittered, washed-up journalist met a spurned symbiotic organism from an alien planet, one of Spider-Man's greatest enemies was born... a force of evil and vengeance like no other in the Marvel Universe - VENOM! But is it as simple as that? Discover the true, twisted roots that gave rise to a lifetime of malevolence for Eddie Brock and the symbiote! Writer Zeb Wells (Amazing Spider-Man) and artist Angel Medina (Sensational Spider-Man) shed a little light on one of Marvel's darkest monsters! Collects Dark Origin #1-5.
Angel Medina's art is awful. He draws heads as giant balloons on spindly toothpick necks. And his faces are so overexaggerated as if it's a caricature.
The story isn't any better. It retells Venom's origin along with Eddie Brock's life up that point. It makes Eddie out to having been a psychopath from childhood, hiding the neighborhood girl's cat so he could be the hero to return it. Brock works best when you have some sympathy for him. That he was just a normal guy who was honestly reporting about the Sin Eater and had the wrong guy, not a reporter who was hiding the Sin Eater's identity to sell more newspapers. The story also gets a lot of smaller established details wrong. I guess Wells and Medina couldn't be bothered to actually read the Spider-Man comics with Venom's origins in them first so they could get the details right. This was a terrible and unnecessary miniseries that brings nothing new to the table. Just go read The Birth of Venom instead.
This tells the past of Eddie before he gets the venom suit and when he has it.
The title doesn't lie. This shit is pretty dark.
Remember Eddie being an asshole in the 80's? Well what about if Eddie stole kittens and then gave them back to make himself look good. Or forcefully grab a girl in High School. OR COVER A MURDERER FOR A STORY. This is Eddie before he becomes the Semi-anti-hero that he is now days. It only gets worse when his life gets worse as that's when he has the faithful meeting of Venom. With Venom and him together they decide to payback Peter/Spider-man.
Overall, this is a lot darker than I expected. The first two issues heavily focus on Eddie's upbringing and you can kind of see why he's a asshole. Then it gets even darker when he covers up murders for a killer to get a story. Then even worse when he gets the Venom suit and decides to pay MJ a visit, really creepy rapey vibes. The wacky art, especially the overexaggerate faces and movements can be jarring at points, while other times the action looks smooth as butter. Overall, this was weird ready, yet I won't lie, I couldn't stop reading. I wouldn't say it's a must read but something different. Not Zeb Wells best but you can't win them all.
Wesee Eddie's origin like from his childhoood and how he was bullied nd all and grew up wanting to be a journalist and then breaking the story on Sin-breaker and getting famous and what happened that led him to have an enemy-ship with Spider-man and how he destroyed his life, the bonding with the symbiote and fighting him constantly and their first battle and how it formed his character from there on! Its not a new story per se just touching familiar grounds but its great for new readers wanting a year one story and its a quick read with simple writing and great art and also fleshes out Eddie's childhood and does well to deep into his hatred for Spider-man and that eternal bond with his symbiote! SO yeah I loved it and highly recommend it!
Another bad Venom story...actually, it's horrendous!
Firstly, I didn't like the art style, except for the illustrations of Venom and Spider-Man. The people were illustrated in a very ugly art style, and that detracted from the otherwise great background artwork and Venom/Spider-Man designs.
As for the story, it was really, really, REALLY bad! This book made Eddie Brock out to be a scumbag from the earliest moments in his life, but why establish his character like that? I know the point was to show that he was always the cause of his own failures in life, and that Spider-Man wasn't actually to blame for his shortcomings, but come on! Make his story a real tragedy with real problems and heartbreaking moments. I didn't feel anything for Brock while reading this. In fact, I rooted against him in his own graphic novel, which is a really bad sign.
Before reading this origin story, I viewed Eddie Brock as a normal guy with good intentions who ultimately got screwed over by bad luck in the end. I never pegged him as intentionally being underhanded, but instead as someone who became a villain as the result of a tragic life that reluctantly lead him down that wretched path. What we got was conformation from Marvel that Venom was bad right from the start, and all his bad luck in life was apparently deserved because he was always a little prick. This came real close to ruining Venom for me. If I did not possess the strength of will to pretend that this crap is not actually canon to Eddie Brock's story, then I might have actually abandoned this character after reading this.
They barely tapped into his childhood life except to show him being a little asshole and act "sad" while he blames himself for his mom's death. I put sad in quotations because he looks about as sad as a kid who just got an Xbox One for Christmas instead of a Playstation 4... It just doesn't do a very good job at telling a sympathetic Venom story. At best, it's barely tolerable, and at worst it is complete garbage. All Zeb Wells managed to do was further tarnish Eddie Brock's backstory with a slew of convoluted messes that make readers hate Venom rather than root for him as either an anti-hero or a misunderstood villain.
It's a shame that almost every Eddie Brock/Venom graphic novel I've read thus far is now permanently tainted by this shitty origin story. Dark Origin leaves a bad taste in my mouth that is hard to wash out, even when looking back at some of the really good Venom stories like Birth of Venom and Maximum Carnage. I still love Venom as a character, but, God dammit, he needs to be treated with some respect and dignity! I cannot, in good faith to fellow Venom fans, recommend this to anyone. You are better off getting your Venom origin story from Death of Jean DeWolff and Birth of Venom; they may not encapsulate his entire background since childhood, but you will at least get a better story – and better Venom – out of those comics.
The art wasnt compelling at all and really detracted, especially in the beginning. Young Brock was flat out ugly.
Story wise, I liked the historical bits - exploring Eddie Brock's past. The story fell apart and got boring on the last half. In fact it was so basic it was predictable.
Venom is one of my all time favorite characters in the Marvel universe, which is why I'm rounding a 2 star to a 3 and calling it 2.5.
It is the retelling of the origin of Venom from Eddie Brock's point of view.
What could have given more dimensions to the titular character, remains a missed opportunity. Not only is the artwork sloppy, the writing and characterization are subpar as well.
It is a title that can be left unread and is easily forgettable.
While the first two issues detail relevant moments in Eddie's life, his bond with the symbiote turns the story into something explosive, perfectly matched by the spectacularly detailed and visceral artwork. This comic does a splendid job of showing how the Venom symbiote thinks and what its home planet looks like, something that was never explored as far as I know. The final battle is with his arch-nemesis Spider-Man. The outcome is to be expected - Venom never really defeated Spider-Man, but this is just the first fight of many to come.
Eddie Brock had a sad childhood. His mother died in childbirth and his father still feels that Eddie is to blame, though he would never say it to his son's face. He was bullied in school, so he tries to get ahead by lying. He becomes a journalist at the Daily Globe, but his big break is based on a lie too - a story stolen from a colleague. His ever-increasing disregard for others and his hatred for Spider-Man will make him the perfect candidate for the Venom symbiote.
Meh... just O.K. the story is an origin story but not a very good one. The art is a major negative for me, I don't like the distorted faces at all and a lot of the action is hard to decipher. The whole point of the story is to establish Eddie Brock was a bad dude since he was a kid.. got it. Other than that it was pretty boring for me.
Venom's early origin is finally revealed, going back to when Eddie Brock was a child. It's not an entirely definitive origin, as not every detail is revealed. It more or less takes all that we knew about Eddie's early days as Venom (and right bef0re) and assembles it into a timeline that makes sense. Different events we've seen before in different comics are here, but it's all put together in a new way.
Overall this isn't groundbreaking, but it's a fun read for Venom fans.
So, I finally got around to reading this. To start, I was really excited when I got the book. I had heard Zeb Wells wrote the story and I liked the "Anti-Venom" minicomic.
I haven't read the original series that explains it, but I've read enough Venom comics to know when a story gets it wrong. And Wells altered most of the story here. The miniseries hurts for it. A lot.
For starters, we can blame artist Angel Medina for not looking up what Eddie's dad looks like. Or his horrific drawings of Brock's face, which made me want to chuck the issues in the trash.
You know, this guy was the main reason I was sure I wasn't going to enjoy the comic and give it 5 stars or anything.
Secondly, Eddie Brock, the guy we're supposed to feel sorry for is completely unrelatable and unlikeable. I could not bring myself to feel sorry for him, or even understand him. Eddie's motives are lame to start with - but in this origin miniseries, he's really, seriously unrelatable. And Wells is writing an origin story and trying to make us feel sorry and bad and sad for him, but it's not working, and that's not a good sign.
I know many fans were disappointed when Spider-Man 3 came out - I remember how outraged everyone was when Grace was cast, but obviously someone knew what they were doing when they let him on as Venom. (The only thing that actually bugged me is that he didn't get much screen time, but I can forgive that considering the film had three villains and Venom wasn't even meant to BE in the film - he was only let in because Arad convinced Raimi to let him because of his fanbase.) Although Grace doesn't have much screen time, the movie is very generous about his transformation into Venom, framing it as coming from a place of hurt rather than evil. Brock may be an asshole, but there's a real sadness to his pleading with Parker not to reveal his edited/stolen photos, or the way he calls Gwen Stacy his girlfriend after a single coffee date. I think Venom was portrayed pretty well in the film, and that the problem was the little screen time he got - which the actor gets wayyyy too much flack for.
Marvel has done its fair share of stories starring villains / anti-heroes. For characters like Bullseye or the Punisher, it's often nothing more than being a cool badass and being more likeable than their targets. Hell, even Deadpool is given moments where he at least tries to redeem himself.
Wells' Eddie Brock is given none of this. He lies about everything(I'll get to that later) - literally everything, from lying about finding a cat to scamming his way into a journalist at the Daily Globe. He scams his way into everything for HIS personal glory and then sulks over his "I have no daddy" issues. We get it. He never got his father's attention and his ma died in childbirth. Why? This is a question I kept repeating after every issue, whichbrings so many questions to mind. You see, from the start of his comic intro, Eddie was shown to believe himself to be a GOOD guy. The only superhero he intentionally ran after (I say intentionally because he went after non-Spider heroes when he was drugged or thought they were evil) was Spider-Man. Granted, he doesn't go hunting down Captain America or the Human Torch, but he doesn't make himself out to be the guy seeking justice. He just has a hate-on for Spider-Man. Eddie has unresolved anger issues, alright, but because of his nonstop lying, manipulation, etc, he is an unsympathetic and unrelateable character. You don't feel for him, because, again, there's nothing to feel for.
Man, the lying he does is unbelievable. He first lies about finding a cat (which he is hinted to have stolen and hidden in a box),which is just plain ridiculous. He then lies his way into his college's newspaper, after which he then scams his future wife Ann Weying into loving him. He then scams his way into an intern at the Daily Globe, where he scams his way into getting an exclusive with the (fake) Sin Eater.
You know, Marvel did this before. They called the character Carnage. Carnage was a psychopathic murderer long before he bonded with his symbiote. He was pretty much like Venom, except that he was much more brutal and undiscriminating on who his victims were.
Much like Carnage, Wells' Brock is a lying sack of sh1t before he bonds with his. He lies to everyone, cries about his daddy issues, and hates Spider-Man. How deep. We love this guy because he's an unrelateable piece of garbage that deserves the same end as Carnage. I know there are Carnage fans and that there will inevitably be fans of Wells' Venom, but I personally hated Carnage as well as the "origin" mincomic's Venom. They butchered his character completely (though that's debatable, since Venom's runs have always been switching back and forth, which is why it's hard to be a fan of Eddie Brock).
It’s shocking to see something so crappy come from Wells. I thought he knew better than that.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Contrary to what the majority seems to think, I definitely preferred this to the art in ‘Birth of Venom’, it just seems a lot smoother? Venom. Venom Venom Venom. Thought I knew how complex of a relationship they and Eddie had but boy was I unprepared for this.
All this year, I did not read a single Marvel comics! Did not wanted to end the year this way.. so after looking for some interesting topics, settled on Venom!
Loved the movie and I must accept I loved the Origin (#1 - #5).
The SpiderMan's own Joker - "You are the Spider, I'm your Venom"
Looking forward to regularly read the venom story arc...
The art style was disproportionate and the story mediocre. Most people already know how Venom began and Eddie Brock is too big of a scumbag to root for.
This was my first venom story and it was boring as hell. Eddie Brock was such a victim in this, I hope that doesn’t carry over to other stories but it was super annoying to me. And the worst part was he was such an asshole at the same time, were we supposed to feel bad for him? They tried to make him sympathetic I guess through the storyline of his mom and the bullies in his life but he was so irritating and weird that I didn’t feel bad for him at all. I also low key hated the art so…
---Even though this has been out a while, potential spoilers ahead---
But the comic isn't perfect. Peter Parker knows the venom is out there after casting it away, but doesn't make it his life's mission to destroy it. I get that he's busy, but if I were him, it's what I would have done. Also, the way Eddie meets his wife was paraphrased and a little odd.
Also, I get that more comes after this collection, but that final battle scene, though really good, was awfully quick. Though how it ended made for a pretty cool tease, I'll give it that.
Anyways, I enjoyed this comic. Eddie Brock's ack story really kept it from being run-of-the-mill, ho-hum which I've come across a time or two since starting this comic book journey.
Art was largely weird in terms of proportioning. Did not like the human faces at all. They looked cartoony, but not in a good way. They were very unsettling. The best art within the whole story was the suit and some of the shots of Venom. Eddie Brock was odd looking and so was every other human. If I were the editor I would've kept the guy's suit work and found someone else to do the human characters and faces. The story wasn't anything special, although I was not aware of the way that Brock set up a story only to fail. That may be just part of this story, or it may be the main story overall and I am just not aware of that because I haven't read much about the character as far as comics go. I knew Eddie was a reporter and that he ended up hating Spider-Man, but the insider story that moved him up only to doom him was a new one on me. It wasn't a bad story, but it wasn't great or highly intriguing. Eddie is basically just a psychopath at a certain point, even before the symbiote comes along. The one thing that could have made this better outside of the story would have been the art, but that again, was lackluster and in my opinion, subpar to what I am used to seeing from Marvel.
