Lyra’s neighbor can’t be for real. A man who makes her hormones stand up and scream every time she sees him. And he’s breaking through her reserve to invade her dreams at night.
But Tarek Jordan is even more than he seems. A Breed Enforcer with a plan. First, find the Council Trainer he’s tracked to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and second, claim the woman next door as his own. She's fated to be his and his alone. He can feel it in his blood. Until the danger that has shadowed his life suddenly casts a darkness over Lyra's as well. Now Tarek knows that he can’t wait any longer to claim the woman his heart and soul burns for. He has to tell her who he is, what he is, and what he wants. And Lyra will have to accept him as he is, on his terms, and now. Her life depends on it.
The Breed Next Door originally appeared in Hot Spell.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Lora Leigh is a New York Times bestselling author of erotic romance novels. Leigh started publishing with electronic publisher Ellora's Cave in 2003. Leigh's longest-running series is The Breeds. She won the 2009 RT Award for erotica. Leigh was born in Ohio and raised in Martin County, Kentucky, US.
The story starts many years after Breeds have made themselves known to the public. Tarek is a lion Breed that is on a mission and lives between humans. He basically lives next to Lyra’s house.
Tarek is a really sweet character. He is longing for a family and for a mate. And what thing has a family smell? Freshly made food of course. The smell of her bread actually was one of the things that made him go at the house next door and meet Lyra. Completely innocently.
Lyra is a feisty female. Sassy, independent. She grew up with her father and her Special Forces brothers. She loves her autonomy that she has only recently earned.
Tarek and Lyra belong together. I enjoyed their clever, funny dialogues. And their mating comes natural. It is not forced.
Other things worth mentioning: The creation of -the scent masking agent that Breed’s enemies will start using -the pill that will help delay conception for the female mates
These books have just the kind of Alpha males that I like. They are of course gorgeous, tall, muscular, smart, trained to be assassins so they are good protectors, they are possessive, a little jealous and very steamy in the bedroom.
This story is about Tarek Jordan, a Lion Breed who escaped the labs at age 10 because he was the runt of the litter and overheard his trainer saying they were going to put him down. However not long after he escaped, he had a growth spurt and ended up just as large as all the rest of the Lion Breeds.
He is living on his own but helping the main Breed Pride using his hacking skills to get information and find people. He also has been getting to know the little accountant next door named Lyra. The romance heats up when the trainer he has been researching shows up at Lyra’s house. It is certainly worth reading.
Synopsis - Tarek Jordan is a feline Breed, created by the Genetic Council by crossing lion and human DNA, then indoctrinated to believe that he would never be anything more than a tool. After he and the other Breeds liberated themselves from their abusive creators, they fought against the brainwashing that said they weren't human, that they couldn't love, and that neither God nor any human would ever love them. Lyra Mason lives next door to Tarek and has worked hard to assert her independence from her overbearing father and brothers. That relationship makes her feel the need to overcompensate whenever she thinks a male is trying to take over.
Yard maintenance has become a bone of contention between the neighbors due to Tarek's enthusiastic but not attractive weed-whacking and mowing - especially when it harms Lyra's prized rose bushes. While she enjoys their arguments (and looking at Tarek even more) she doesn't want him to know that. Of course, his heightened senses easily alert him to her true reaction to him, and he would be more than happy to reciprocate. His reaction to her escalates and Tarek learns the biggest secret about the Breeds: they have destined mates out in the world, and Lyra is is his. Tarek loves the idea of her being his mate, but thinks that a) things are too dangerous right now to act on it and b) Lyra more likely to run away than into his arms. Lyra knows she probably should run away, but her body is turning traitor and her heart is claimed by the vulnerability she sees in his eyes.
Review - This is a short story by Lora Leigh, so the bulk of the word count goes to chemistry. *wink wink, nudge nudge* There's a side plot about a former Council bad guy who want to kill Tarek and kidnap Lyra, but mostly the focus is on the budding relationship. Lyra's a bit of a termagant and Tarek is, if not an alpha male, at least a strong beta. Fortunately she has no hang-ups about his animal nature or real resistance to falling in love, so it's mostly smooth sailing. They just have to navigate her prickly relationship with her father and her three (former?) Navy SEAL brothers.
So far I have only read 3 short stories from the Breeds series (and this was a re-read), but the world is fascinating. I hope order isn't too important, because I don't think my library has all of the books. The writing's not the best, but it's not bad enough to detract from the interesting story. Although, I almost choked when I read "dampening the material with the damp heat..." That's why there's a thing called a thesaurus!
OK, after reading various shape-shifter stories I finally searched online to confirm that felines have barbed penises. Ouch! One site said it's common in most mammals to have some similar mechanism on the male genitalia. There is apparently an entire series of YouTube videos about the World's Scariest Penises. After watching the one about Leopard Slugs, I'm scarred for life.
Thank god this one was short! Not that I don't love it, trust me I do. It's just easier to review a shorter book than it does with a long one. But wow! I really liked this installment in the Breeds series by Lora Leigh. It was very hot, typical of any books by this author. Not to mention that I really enjoyed the relationship between the hero and the heroine. Ahah, she always threatens to kill him... but we all know that she won't. I really adore Lyra and Tarek together because even though this was a short read, you could really feel the emotion and feelings that Tarek has for Lyra.
But yeah, the biggest and probably best impression that I had of this book was that the sex between was freakishly hot. Wow. Wow...... I mean that scene with the stairs? Hot damn. Lora Leigh is pretty creative when it comes to this, lol! It seems like most of these books have a sort of repetive theme where the hero is super possesive of the heroine and she tries to defy him and stuff. It all ends with a tumble of course. ;) The love scenes are pretty explicit though, so it's not for the faint of heart. Overall, I really enjoyed this read! 5/5 stars.
The Breed Next Door is a quick and fast read that really adds a bit more depth to the "Breeds" series. For those that aren't aware, there is a readalong being done for this series currently and its so fun. But I never have really had a chance to read the series in order and especially pick up the novella's as well throughout this either. I went into this one pretty blind and I had a blast with it. I have to say that Lora Leigh always knows how to pull her readers into her books so quickly, start out with plenty of intrigue and keep you fascinated with the plot until the end which always leaves one satisfied but also yearning for a bit more.
The Breed Next Door has some delightful tropes and themes in this one. You basically have a set up of a man, who has been prisoner and experimented on most of his life. He knows nothing about even the most basic things in life. Then we have our heroine, who is appalled when her next door neighbor, who is sexy as sin, but keeps butchering her yard and when he slaughters her rose bushes, its the last straw for her. haha These two have so much chemistry, but there is a bit of angst between them and once they work through their issues, and the heroine finds out who the hero really is, a breed, and coming from a family that helped rescue the breeds from the labs, she knows exactly who this man is and why he is struggling with the norms in daily life. They bond, have lots of dirty sex, mate for life and bring down some enemies. So a typical Lora Leigh novel to entertain and delight in all of the best of ways.
I had a blast with this one and very eager to continue on with the series! We have some goodies I still need to get to this month.
A fascinating little tale from the mother of the Breeds. The author has outdone herself with this short, sweet book of Tarek and Lyra. The fun and love they share as they make their way to their HEA is a joy to read about. They may run into a few snags, but family has their back. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
It was a fun read, I loved the humor and the characters. This is a short story and Ms Leigh managed to squeeze everything in it - quirky characters, suspense and danger, great erotica, and confessions of love.
I could just imagine Lyra and Tarek together. He's really amusing and Lyra's sharp tongue and feigned irritation masked her attraction for him - and growing lust. She's a smart one too, having figured out Tarek's a Breed. I really liked that he had a horrendous amount of self-control, explaining everything to Lyra before he claimed her as his mate.
I also loved it whenever she defied him, I'd do the same in her case. So Tarek's searching for the Trainer and the tables were turned because he was the one who was hunted. Another thing I liked about Lyra is her quick wit, she gave free reign to her fear so Tarek could sense it and with that, he knew what to do.
It was a light read, not too emotional and I'm reading on to the next.
Id rate this book a solid 4.5 stars. It was short but the plot was fast paced, and the execution was great.
The pros: * I loved that they were neighbors and their relationship progressed over time * Tarek was such a loveable hero - I'd really enjoyed the aspect of him learning everything on his own and how he appreciated the smallest things. Mowing, homemade bread, etc * The sex was beyond steamy!!!!!!!!!! Off the charts hotness * For a short book (a little under 100 pages) it was intense * It was a page turner - never really a dull moment
The cons: * A 24 year old virgin??? Ugh * It did have that insta-love vibe to it * An epilogue could have done wonders
Overall, this was a great addition to the series and I look forward to reading more.
This was an interesting addition to the series. I loved the characters but wished there had been more character development and background. Still love this series.
este es un libro corto entre la saga y la historia de Tarek y su compañera es super linda ademas de que cuenta con el maravilloso cliche "el chico del lado" . es uno de esos libros cortos pero sustanciosos.
After my last Breed read several months ago, I decided I needed a break from the series. I decided to dip my toe back in with this novella --and everything about this series came rushing back. It's sexy, with a possessive, controlling hero. The heroine is a feisty virgin. The sex is hot. The language walks the line between dirty and ridiculous. And then it's over.
Tarek is a lion breed who has never had a normal life. He tries to enjoy the little things, like his own home and cutting the grass, while working an undercover job, tracking a Trainer. He enjoys a fun, slightly antagonistic rapport he has going on with his sexy neighbor Lyra. He can't cook --or even make coffee. He's never tasted fresh-baked bread. He was raised to think of himself as little more than an animal. Yet, for all of his strength and instinct, he is vulnerable.
Lyra hates how attracted she is to Tarek. But she can't help it. Of course, it turns out she is his mate. Which leads to lots and lots... and lots of sex. Her lady bits weep. They convulse. There is a lot shattering and creaming. And then there is Tarek trying to tell her what to do. Granted, there is danger and all, but this is the series M.O. At least he was up front with her about what his kiss would do to her --and he helped make sure she didn't get pregnant. That's progress, right?
The I Love You's were flowing like water and of course Lyla's brothers are all Special Forces! But that's what this series is. If you liked the other books in the series, you'd like this one too. For a Breeds book, I'd give it a B. But if I compared it to something else, LOL, not so much.
Realmente fue refrescante, chica enamorada del chico de al lado, que el resultará ser un Casta león es otra cosa. No tenemos el factor drama intenso y es completamente bienvenido.
Another short story that’s basically the same as the other books – we know that a breed will mate with a human; they go through the mating frenzy, etc etc etc. A bit of a plot…..you can get it from the book blurb because you basically get the whole thing there…this is s short story after all!!
I quite like Tarek Jordan although he was a bit over-powering…but then that’s what happens when these super breed males finally meet their mate. I did feel for the torture he went through when held captive.
Now, Lyra, his next door neighbor – hum…spunky…well…virgin…….not that one would ever guess the way she gets into Tarek….okay, they have been neighbors for six months so I can’t exactly call her a slut!!!! I thought her a bit shallow at times. But hell, she makes Tarek happy, so who am I to even hold that against her!!! Thank heavens she eventually gave the poor man some of her fresh home baked bread and her “real” coffee…but it took her a while to do this act of kindness!!!!
Again, lots and lots of sex scenes which I am skipping some of them… Can’t wait for the next full length book!!!
Tarec and Lyra... a novella... He is Breed / Lion, in his own house, tasked with finding The Trainer, Council authorized 'trainer' of the lab that had created Tarec... and tried to dehumanize him, make him into a killing machine... Lyra, accountant...first virgin of the Breed books... 3 older brother of SpecialOps who had helped to free Breeds, homebody, bakes bread, doesn't take crap from her brothers, does not let them rule her life...
They have been neighbors for months, and Tarec looks for ways to engage her, and Lyra treats him like her brothers... until he gets himself invited in to taste some of her bread & coffee... and he is entirly lost to her...
And the Trainer comes in the night to hurt her, Tarec 'feels' his presence, and protects her... and complains to Jonas, who explains to him about the mating hormones... ant Tarec is estatic that she was made for him...
and they have sex.... lots of sex... The Trainer comes, he is defeated... Tarec meets her brothers & father, and convinces them that he loves her and will protect her...awwwww.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Tarek Jordan is trying to do his job and for some strange reason he decided to buy a house, I place of his own, somewhere that he could make a life and a home. Little did he know that the hellion he moved next to would keep him on edge, tense, and his balls so tight he is having a hard time controlling it. What is it about her that makes him long for her kiss and to pet her, all day and all night long?
Lyra knows he is too good to be true but she loves razzing and looking at Tarek because honestly.. no one should be that damn sexy.. no matter what time of the day it is. Yet, when he comes over to make peace and she sees the rapture on his face from just a taste of her coffe and her bread, she cant stop herself from feeling. It is the same feeling she got the first time she saw him just more intense...
This is a great story and yet another great addition to the breed saga
One of my favorites and really wish that it had been longer.. You will LOVE the characters (sp) in this story and I would REALLY love to read about some of the others that showed up in this story (of course a few do show up)!! ;-)
The date showing that I read this book is really just when I reread it. I read all the Breed books just as soon as they are published. That should tell you how much I lOVE this series! In other 20 books/stories in this series I have only read ONE that I didn't like (Wolf's Hope).
Tarek and Lyra are next door neighbors (they're more like the odd couple). Tarek is a breed and is trying to live a normal life. His version of a normal life is driving Lyra crazy. His gardening skills leave a lot to be desired and he just murdered her rose bushes. But there's something about him that pulls at her. The feeling is mutual for Tarek ( the way she makes coffee is like manna from heaven and he would gladly mug someone for her homemade bread
What a fabulous Novella, it was a fun read. Lyra meets the Breed Living next door. Tarek is on a mission, he is a hunter working for the Breed. His mission is to capture/kill a previous Trainer, an evil, who worked in the labs where the Breed were held. How I loved Lyra, she is one fiesty female, and takes great pleasure in razzing Tarek. It seems to of become a game between them. However things really start to heat up, when there is a threat to Lyra. Hot, fun with danger lurking, great !!
After writing off the Breed series, I decided to try again. Does she have any book in the whole of this series that the guy isn't an asshole? Or the women aren't treating like a walking, talking sex toy? The books are interesting and have a lot of good story in them. They also have the tendancy to become total porn and slightly gross. Not a great balance.
