Reviews

'The Life and Adventures of Bert' is a captivating book, beautifully balanced between doings and feelings, joys and sorrows, the human and the -well- Bert, the personal and the universal. Anderson delivers a brave and poignant memoir sharing the triumphs and tragedies, the testament of a dog's life.'

'If you ever had a special pet, one that changed you forever, then you should read this book. We know that our days with our beloved companions are precious, but we seldom take the time to record the sunrise swims or sunset saunters. The Life and Adventures of Bert captures those memories and reminds us how profoundly we cherish our once-in-a-lifetime companions. This story teaches about compassion, and about how love shared grows exponentially. Gift this to the pet parents, potential pet parents, kids who love animals, or anyone who understands that pet hair is just natural glitter!'

'The feeling of loving a dog and to be loved by a dog is something that is not easily described in words, and I seriously doubt it can be understood by those that haven’t experienced it. Yet, in his book The Life and Adventures of Bert, Ross Anderson Graham manages to convey the mutual love, friendship and bond between a dog and his human to print. I had the pleasure of being one of Bert’s first followers on Twitter. His good looks and resemblance to my own Labrador was what caught my eye. But what kept my attention was Graham's excellent writing, his short descriptions of Bert’s activities and his character. In those short texts, the special bond the two of them shared was evident. When I heard that Graham was writing a book about Bert, I was quite excited and had my hopes set up. I had the privilege of reading the book before publication and it certainly did not disappoint. The Life and Adventures of Bert is beautifully written and full of humour and love, but also sadness and longing as well as hope and joy. It will make you laugh out loud, and it will make you cry. It will make you want to have a dog if you don’t have one already or want to give the one(s) you have extra hugs. It will make you want to go out and enjoy life. And it certainly will make you want to visit the Scottish countryside. John Heim’s illustrations are amazing and, as well as the numerous photos in the book, complement it. The Life and Adventures of Bert is a book for those that love dogs, for those who have a dog in their life or have ever had that special bond with a dog or another animal. It is a love story in the broad sense of the word. In fact, it is the most beautiful love story I have ever read. But it is of course not your typical boy meets girl love story, though that actually happens. It is a beautiful essay, a man’s tribute to his best friend, to his family, and to his country.'

This is a tale of one dog and how he captured the hearts of millions. Bert was his own dog, a big boxy golden lab that did everything on is own terms and in his own time. I don’t think Bert’s mom or dad thought he would be a twitter star when they first found #DogsofTwitter and soon after Bert pledged himself to the zombie squad #zshq and using his slow stealth mode ways to patrol for zombies and to keep his mom, dad, and farm safe. It was just something to do during the Covid lock down. I loved Bert as we both had slowed down a lot both due to arthritis, but both of us were also trying to keep going no matter how slow. I could relate to him, it was nice to have that during Covid. Bert showed people how to love even in a time where there was much fighting and people were getting antsy about the lock down and thank goodness things started to get back to normal. But no one forgot Bert he was people’s morning sunshine he made them smile no matter how they felt, they looked for his posts every morning, it was not to be missed. Bert was special.
This is a great book about an even greater dog, but have the tissues ready, as much as it is a celebration of Bert, I fear it will bring many tears to your eyes as it did mine. Bert was a one in a million dog and now maybe if you are ever lucky enough to come across a Bert rock in your hiking or walking you will know what it means.

As I read this loving tribute to the bestest boy I could hear 'you are my sunshine, my only sunshine' being sung quietly to Bert on his last day. If you have ever been owned by a dog this book will call out to you. It reflects how much better a life can be with a faithful four legged furry friend a dog. As so rightly said a dog will love you more than it loved itself, you can do no wrong in your dogs eyes.
I've had this book since it was published but couldn't bring myself to read it. I followed Bert and family probably within days of his joining Twitter and wasn't sure I was ready to read his book yet. Beautifully written by a fellow dog lover. He's right, if you need lifting after a bad day, #Dogsoftwitter will lift your mood and make you smile.
I smiled and how I cried (again).

A Beautiful Story of Love

This book was therapeutic for me. Descriptions of Bert reminded me of my dog, Luke, in some ways. Luke was a dog who was loved by everyone he met — people and animals. So many of the thoughts and feelings about Bert resonated deeply.

Bert had the best life and I know he is happily waiting for his mom and dad across the rainbow bridge.

Read this book. It will make you smile and know that love goes on and on.

What an amazing read, I laughed out loud through the book at Bert's adventures and cried at the end, lovely story also loved all the poems. We also had a black Labrador for 12years, Gem she was very much like Bert, would always do things her way, hopefully her and Bert have met and are now both running through the flowers and over the Rainbow Bridge with all the other much loved dogs.

How do I rate Bert? By his plodding, cronchy, or zombie hunting skills? All of them were excellent. But what I think wins my heart is Bert’s soulful eyes. The way he brought us together during a scary time of lockdown when we were most isolated. This story will warm your heart and bring tears of both sadness and joy. Thank you to Bert and his mom and dad for giving us those intangible connections and beauty when we were terrified by all the deaths happening around us. Bert lived a good life and his legacy lives on in those of us who loved him (even from afar)!

A stunning book, that I think any pet owner can relate to. The joys and really heartbreaking times of owning and loving a pet. I loved going on the journey with you and Bert not only on twitter but again in your book. Superbly written and illustrated. Bert would be so honoured ❤️

This book was wonderful. As a devoted dog mum myself and dog lover my whole life the story resonated with me very much. I smiled, laughed and sobbed.
Bert just made me think about my previous chunky chocolate labs, so many similarities apart from the hard start Bert had in life. So happy he found his forever loving home and had such a wonderful story to tell.
Such wonderful adventures and stories along the way , also living in Scotland it was even more realistic reading about memories where we have adventures too. The words just played before me like a movie.
I truly believe you find your soul dog and the tales of Bert just confirmed this for me.
The loss of your dog can be as hard hitting as any family member. No other dogs replace them but when you have so much love to give it’s a brave step to love again.
So it was lovely to read that Albert and Bera are now following the adventures of Bert, double trouble, double love.
The rainbow bridge really is a place where all dogs you’ve ever loved come to greet you.
Thank you Ross for a wonderful, funny, inspiring and emotional read.
Biggest thanks to Bert for being so wonderful!

I'm one of Bert's twitter friends. I loved seeing videos of him...doing nothing! Watching the world go by. Reminding us all to stop, take time, enjoy life, nature & simple things. A gentle soul who loved his life with his mom & dad.

This book is a fabulous tribute to Bert & everything he brought to his dad's life. It's joyous & heart wrenching in equal measure. I read it on holiday by the pool, giggling & sobbing uncontrollably. If you'vd ever had a dog in your life you'll get this book. If you haven't, hopefully you'll maybe start to understand that a dog is NEVER just a dog.

Bert we miss you, but Albert & Bera are doing you proud...in an energetic kind of way!

And to Ross, thanks for sharing your love & heartache. I felt every step with you. And I totally agree with whoever told you that not having another dog would be doing Bert an injustice. Albert & Bera are testament to that.

On that note I'm off for a plod & plop!

A wonderful recollection of a great dog. It's important to keep memories alive and this book does just that. Dogs touch our hearts and give us a reason for living.

Bert you are unforgettable

I remember my first “Twitter” view of Bert, it was the toilet role exercise. Bert made my day, every day, during Covid lockdowns & the subsequent angst, yo7 were our sunshine. Thank you for sharing Bert with us. I cried a river last night as I was determined to read and enjoy him through unto the end. Introducing Albert & Bera to the book was a brilliant idea. My tears for Bert dried up, his memory lives on. The tune you are my sunshine will forever more feature Bert in my memories.
