Gumdrop was an old car, but he was handsome and well-cared-for as long as he belonged to Mr. Oldcastle.
But the day comes when Gumdrop's owner must sell him. Stripped by an auto parts dealer, smashed during a burglar's getaway, sold and finally abandoned in a field and used for shelter, poor Gumdrop seems to have come to the end of his road!
But a very kind rescuer appears, and what happens next is not only amusing, but also very satisfying to the reader.
Val Biro (pronounced Beer-oh) was a children's author, artist and illustrator, was a native of Hungary, but was a resident in Sussex in England. He received his education in Budapest and London. His studio was located in Amersham in Buckinghamshire.
"I write so as to give my alter-ego a good chance for drawing pictures, though I find that the story I invent tends to run away with itself, leaving me, the illustrator, behind! Each story tends to be based on personal experience and, equally, each tends to grow out of that into the imagination. Each book seems to take a few months to gestate, and then I write it in one long day (or night)."
Gumdrop – The Adventures of a Vintage Car (Gumdrop the Vintage Car) by Val Biro- Hindi language translation by Arvind Gupta- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- the book narrates the story of a Gumdrop Vintage Car owned by Mr Oldcastle. He had no money to maintain this car, therefore, the car fell to misuse and was parked at a place where its parts were stolen and sold. One day, Bill McArran, a vintage car enthusiast, bought this vintage car and towed to his residence. Mr. Bill and his wife repaired him. With a bit of effort, eventually he was able to get back all the sold parts of the car. In the vintage rally, this car won first prize. Coloured illustrations help the reader to relate to the story. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book.
Gumdrop is an old car. His owner, Mr. Oldcastle, decides the time has come to sell Gumdrop. It is not easy to sell him. No one wants the old car. Instead, he sells him part by part. Then one day along comes a vintage car enthusiast who wants to put Gumdrop back together again.
If your child loves cars then this is going to get their little carburettors going. It has car diagrams at front and back and a sweet little story about a vintage car being pulled apart for its pieces, then lovingly put back together.
I think any vintage car enthusiast will enjoy this book. Hard to believe about the parts and everyone's generosity, but one can suspend belief in a story,
