This is the most enjoyable science curriculum I have found for my elementary students! I especially love how God is woven through every lesson. We are looking forward to reading more from this series!

I coveted these books for a very long time before buying them. I never wanted to use them as a curriculum but rather as reference books. There is SOO much information packed into these books about creatures that it is hard to find interesting information about elsewhere. I wasn't sure the children would like reading through these but I decided to give it a go for the summer term. They LOVED this book and are anxious to start the next and won't even hear of waiting till next summer to start Zoology 2. They could not get enough of this book even when we got to flying insects where I thought their interest might wane. We tried one or two of the experiments but we were unimpressed and will stick to using this as a living book only. Just read and narrate, no notebooks or silly experiments that don't seem to go with the content. I was pleasantly surprised that my kids enjoyed this so much.

Excellent Zoology curriculum. I learned so much as I read it to our kids and it was very interesting. The way it was laid out was really nice. It has review questions at the end of each chapter and there is an answer to those questions in the back of the book which made it easy to make sure we were covering the right material. It was enjoyable for my Kindergartener all the way up to my 7th grader.

This was my science book this year. My sister and I did this together. My favorite lesson was probably lesson 11. The reason is because I, thought it was interesting learning about bees ants, wasps, and termites. It told what they had to do to survive. Anyway, I thought it was the most interesting.

Well, I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't like this series, but I don't. And here are the reasons why:

1. The author likes to "chat", have little conversations with you like she's sitting right there with you. That bugged. It was confusing for my kids because I kept reading "I" but it wasn't me, it was the author. And it takes up so much stinking time. I kept thinking "get on with it - I have a ton of other things to do today!" I found myself skipping over those parts so we could just get to the "information".

2. There is a TON of information here. Minute little details. That's both good and bad. We tried this in the first grade and most of it was just too advanced for them. I can see that this might work as they get older though.

3. The activities she recommends are HUGE. Like building 2 identical bird feeders and tracking what birds visit over a few weeks. Building bird houses and several other BIG projects. I didn't have the time with a toddler and a preemie newborn. We kept skipping over stuff and I felt we weren't really understanding because we didn't have that reinforcement it would have provided. And dad didn't have time to help either.

I think the book is beautiful. Wonderful pictures and lovely glossy pages. It just didn't work for us. I've kept the book though and may use it again when they're a little older. Or have them read through it in middle school/junior high and do the stuff on their own.

UPDATE 2009 - We're using this for the third grade and it's working much better. I do edit out the 'chatty' junk and sometimes paraphrase things. We sometimes do the experiments and sometimes we just modify them. My boys seem to enjoy it and I've learned to loosen up and not expect perfect retention. This book (and the series) is more about gaining a love for science. I still feel it is too textbooky for my taste, but it's so difficult to get all the books I need from the library in all the subjects that I caved on science and use this, with whatever books I can find thrown in.

We will most likely finish this series and also the Real Science 4 Kids series (which I LOVE) and then use whatever science books we can get our hands on. This does the job, especially when you're in a book poor area.

UPDATE 2012 - Well, we picked it back up again. We just kept losing interest and stopping. But this time we finished!!! Towards the end, when we hit the insects, they started to enjoy it a little better. It would have been better had I timed it with spring/summer when we could actually FIND bugs. Overall it's a good book. Not my favorite, but it does the job.

This book is a highlight of our school day. It is an exceptionally well written book and full of photos and diagrams that fully explain to a young grade school student what might otherwise be difficult terms like "echolocation", "airfoil", and "binomial nomenclature." Sprinkled in are some pretty fun and easy to do at home experiments. One simple one has been to set an egg on our counter and candle it everyday to see the changes that take place. And YES it is most emphatically CHRISTIAN, so if that is not what you are interested in you will want to steer clear of this whole series.

It is a book that can very easily be covered in one year. The chapters have been divided further into smaller categories making it easy to progress and easy to come to a finishing point each lesson.

My children love keeping a science notebook of all our new facts and terms learned and to draw the diagrams into their notebook from the text book.

My children even go back months later and reread their notebooks just for the fun of it. That is real learning!

It is real in depth science at a child's level. I highly recommend it for your science curriculum for a year.

I'm not a "science person" but I'll mark this high based on readability, information and interest. It can be difficult to find books that are easy to read out loud, without a lot of bubbles with extra info all over the page. This book would be fine for a student to read independantly, but also worked well as a read aloud. The book included enough information for the kids to be interested in the subject matter. I find the more the student knows about a subject the more they enjoy it. We wanted in depth rather than a brief overview and were happy with what we learned. The subject matter itself was surprisingly engaging for our students and the experiments ranged from quick and easy to quite lengthy. Many of the experiments were skipped over because of the cost or time required but on the whole it was a good variety of projects. If we had more than 5 stars, this book would rank high, but not perfect, but as we only have five, I lean towards 5 instead of 4. We will be using more Apologia books for science in the future because of our experience with this book.

I was so blessed to find these books! I didn't know I loved science until we started using these books for school at home. The notebooking journals that go with them are fantastic. Ms. Fulbright has great insight and a spiritual mind that appeals to us. Her ideas are interesting and her lessons are well presented. It's so completely false that science and religion are incompatible - they beautifully compliment each other! Who is the Master Biologist, after all?

My kids were very attentive, asked great questions, and enjoyed this book a lot. It does go into information you would not find in a general textbook which we enjoyed. I also like how easy the experiements are presented as sometimes we would not do them, but my kids could go back and do them themselves when they were inspired.
