Paul McCusker is a writer of many different kinds of things. You may know him from Adventures In Odyssey and Focus On The Family Radio Theatre. Or the Father Gilbert Mysteries. Or the Augustine Institute audio dramas Brother Francis: The Barefoot Saint of Assisi and The Trials of Saint Patrick. Or plays like The First Church of Pete's Garage and Catacombs. Or C.S. Lewis projects like The Chronicles of Narnia audio dramas or The Annotated Screwtape Letters. Or the film Beyond The Mask. Or lots of other dramas, novels, scripts and lyrics. He simply can't make up his mind what he likes to write.

Yet another smashing installment of The Father Gilbert mysteries.

Healing always had a bit of a personal meaning for me (partially because the main heroine is named Allison and for ONCE isn't a nasty, vain girl) and for other reasons that touched my spirit. It's a gripping episode that encourage a lot of thought and a touch of awe. Overall, it's quite serious in tone, but an obnoxious reporter and the derision of our heroes towards this tabloid representative adds some welcome humor to the graveness of this installment.

Secrets is a bit more of a mystery, and involves the added tenseness of the "ticking bomb" as Father Gilbert races against time to save a dying friend by breaking a girl in two. This episode features one of the most emotional bits of acting I've ever heard in radio theater in a heart-breaking scene that is sure to move you as Father Gilbert finally digs down past anger to reach the grief, and in doing so saves more than one individual.

If you're looking for a bit of audio for a jog or a rainy day with quality acting, great scripting, and a classy vibe, this could be your proverbial cup of tea.

Healing 5 stars - Father Gilbert handles the investigation into real faith healings by God versus the fame seeking hype of fake healers who only disappoint followers. This subject was very well handled.

Secrets 3 stars - Father Gilbert helps to solve a mystery of his missing friend. The circumstances surrounding it are a little unbelievable and the lady repeatedly questioned was always screeching, thus the three star rating.

The first story was worth the purchase of this CD and I will listen to the first story again.

I really enjoyed listening to my second experience of Father Gilbert mysteries. Deeper than I expected them to be, and characters weren't always as they seemed, which I liked. Recommended for a fun listen!

Radio Theatre does such excellent work producing audio books–they come to life. I enjoy all of them. This is true of the Father Gilbert Mystery Series. I bought these with the intent of giving them to my grandchildren for vacation road trips. However, these have themes of a mature nature not suitable for younger children. The warning recommendation is for over 15 years of age. Parents will need to decide for themselves.

I’m drawn to Father Gilberts non pushy or preachy style of living out his Christian beliefs.

Father Gilbert used to be a London Detective; he took to the Anglican cloth after a very disturbing case.

Description: Father Gilbert is riding on a train home from a church council when he meets a man named Rob Brady. The train collides with another, and Brady dies from his injuries. His last words are "Warn him," and Gilbert discovers a business card belonging to his friend, Bill Drake. The next day, Drake is kidnapped, and the police arrest the kidnapper, Kathy Brady, Rob's twin sister (who goes by the alias "Jezzy Bell" - a play on the name Jezebel). The mystery is where Drake is, and what Kathy's motives were. To complicate matters, Drake has a heart condition and must take medication every eight hours; if he goes twelve hours without it, he will go into cardiac arrest. It turns out that Rob and Kathy are illegitimate children, fathered by a member of the British nobility. Drake arranged for Rob to stay with his mother and for Kathy to be adopted. Kathy thinks her mother, who died of cancer the year before, abandoned her at Drake's urging, and is taking out her anger on Drake. Gilbert reads her birthday letters from her mother, proving that she loved her and gave her up out of love for her. Kathy breaks down and reveals where she left Drake. The police arrive in time to save Drake and get him to a hospital, where he later expresses remorse to Gilbert for having made such a hasty arrangement without thinking of the consequences of his deed, but Gilbert says that Kathy's two families received money each year from an unspecified doner, and that the doner was Drake, because of his conscience.

We had enjoyed the Narnia series done by this company and so decided to do this one as a family as well.

My 4th grader said the Healing story involved a "scary situation" and there was person who called himself an angel and a person that healed people. She thought the part with the poison was creepy.

It was interesting to me to see each of the kids' guesses as to what was really going on as the story progressed. The 4th grader also took note that the "angel" said, "You don't believe in MY power," rather than "You don't believe in God's power." Other clues came from comparing scripture.

My 4th grader ended up having a nightmare after this CD, although - SPOILER - nobody in it dies.

Two of the kids enjoyed the second story, "Secrets" better than the first, but no one was fooled by Jezze Bell's name.
