The weak and taciturn Li Chengxiu suffered all kinds of bullying during his school days. Shao Qun’s frivolous moment of interest gave him the tiny sliver of warmth back then. Yet, it also pushed his young self into a much deeper darkness.
Ten years later, they met again. To Shao Qun, Li Chengxiu was a piece of dessert that he didn’t dare to try in the past, so he approached him with an ulterior motive.
This time around, will it be an atonement for the past, or the beginning of yet another catastrophe?
WHY WAS THERE NO CHEATING TAG?! I’m so angry I could cry. To anyone considering reading this: don’t waste your time. The male lead is not only a cheating scumbag but also a rapist.
I keep giving 188 books a chance because of the groveling arcs, but I’m consistently disappointed by how poorly written the male lead characters are. This book is no exception. I seriously need to block these books from my feed and stop trusting recommendations from FB and Novel Updates. It feels like I’ve been scammed, this is just as bad as falling for overhyped books on BookTok. Absolute garbage. I am livid.
Rating: 3.5/5 - Angst is me! I am angst! This book satisfies a decent angst itch!
Redemption was kind of meh because we know the MC became almost complacent with the psycho ML! Bruh was crazy AF but I’m usually a huge fan of Yandere’s and he was just a poorly written one.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: manipulation, dubcon/noncon, mental abuse, physical and sexual assaults, obsessed ML but not in a hot way, internalized homophobia, sexism, discrimination, kidnapping, stalking, burglary, gaslighting, abuse of power, classism, bullying, cheating, bunch of misogynistic and annoying men, blackmailing, angst
contains spoilers ✨✨✨
This is part of the 188 series so expect the usual trope—wife chasing in the crematorium. The gong, who is scummy, will break the shou’s heart and trust, then he will grovel, chase after their wife and will do anything to win back wifey’s heart, even doing the extreme measures to achieve it. It is full of emotional torture and painful stabbing in the heart. It is frustrating, angsty but it has a happy ending—if happy ending means shou is content and happy to be with his gong and no one is bothering them anymore.
SQ is a scumbag. I could tolerate his obsession and possessiveness but I hate him for being a cheater. Give me a toxic ML but never a cheater and someone who raises their hand at their wife and physically harms them. SQ is a selfish bastard. He keeps his arranged marriage a secret from LCX because he wants to keep him by his side like a favorite toy (according to him). He also sleeps with his fiancè while dating LCX the fvkng audacity. This man needs to be slapped with a baseball bat. He flaunts new lovers in front of LCX (who always looks hurt) to get a reaction from him but then he gets angry and loses his mind when LCX finally dates someone else. I wanna put him in a microwave oven especially when he was trying to convince (manipulate) LCX into thinking that nothing will ever change even if he gets married. He deserves a star in the wall of shame. Though I almost give a standing ovation when LCX clapped him by asking if he could get married as well. He was like, “you can marry someone else but I couldn’t? What do you take me for?” mf was left speechless.
The chasing arc is quite satisfying because SQ really grovels and looks pitiful while trying to win LCX back (and his efforts always going to waste, serves him right). He thinks a couple of sorrys and “I’ll treat you better this time” are enough to absolve him from all the terrible things he did to LCX, for all the humiliating and hurtful things he said to him. He took LCX’s love and loyalty for granted and treated him like a plaything who didn’t deserve respect. Now he’s crawling, begging, crying and yearning like a man who couldn’t live without his wife. I love how he thought LCX was naive, soft and would easily give in but he was wrong. LCX is none of those things. I love how LCX values himself despite his poor background and people always bullying and looking down on him. He’s got self-preservation and doesn’t let his emotions clouded his decisions. He finally get SQ to taste his own medicine. It took SQ a lot of mental and emotional suffering for him to finally realize how much of a scumbag he’s been and how much LCX means to him.
I feel bad for LCX. SQ has wronged him in every way even during their school days. SQ literally ruined young LCX’s life and his future. LCX became an orphan, had to quit school from too much bullying (caused by young SQ), lost his hearing ability in his left ear (also from bullying) and had to work his ass off to survive. He’s dirt poor, alone and has speech impediment as well. This beautiful man deserves all the good things in life and a better lover (he should have ended up with brother Li). There is also a feeling of hopelessness in his situation because there is a power dynamic involved in his relationship with SQ. LCX got no money to his name and SQ could easily harrass him and make his life miserable if he wanted to because LCX has no powerful person or family to protect and back him up from an obsessed and powerful heir like SQ. Good thing he met brother Li who protected and loved him, otherwise SQ would not stop blackmailing and harassing LCX. But then again, SQ never gave up. He must get his wife back no matter what and he could do it because he’s got money and influence. This is why between them, SQ will always have the upper hand and the one who has more control. LCX is literally at the bottom of the social hierarchy while SQ sits at the top.
I might decide to read the novel because despite how messy and frustrating the manhua is, I think it’s a different experience with the novel.
