White Demon: One Man's Quest for the South Pole

Rate this book
Set against the magnificent backdrop of an unexplored frozen land, White Demon ventures into a place few humans will ever experience.

When Chris Weyers decided to fulfil his childhood fantasy of trekking 1150 kilometres to the South Pole, he got more than he bargained for. Joining a team consisting of two hardened Arctic experts, within days, fear, pain, and physical collapse became his constant companions.

Only so much can go wrong on an expedition before it becomes unsafe, or unsuccessful, and when Chris discovers he has a crippling injury he decides to keep it from the others, rather than be sent home. As he weakens and falls behind he is forced to confront his demons, and in a desperate attempt to keep his place on the expedition, his battle for survival turns into a tense psychological contest. With his eyes firmly fixed on the prize, Chris is determined to make it to the Pole whatever the cost. But the brutal isolation of Antarctica is taking more of a toll on him than he could have ever imagined.

White Demon is a first-hand account of a modern Antarctic adventure. The powerful true story of an expedition gone wrong, it's a tale of endurance that takes us deep into a brutal physical, and intense psychological struggle, set in the harshest environment on earth.

The reader gets to experience what it would be like and what is required to walk to the South Pole, but the writing was average. Whilst the author who actually completed the trip spoke honestly in terms of his thoughts and feelings and the difficulties he faced, it was difficult to fully engage because it was hard to like him because of the way he came across in the book...

Interesting read in regards to the past history the author retells. The author’s story is tainted by what I would call an inflated ego and self reclaimed status - filled with a lot of complaining when this is tested by two superior hikers.
