USA TODAY bestselling author Maureen A. Miller worked in the software industry for fifteen years. She crawled around plant floors in a hard hat and safety glasses, hooking up computers to behemoth manufacturing machines. The job required extensive travel. The best form of escapism during those lengthy airport layovers became writing.
Maureen’s first novel, Widow's TALE, earned her a Golden Heart nomination in Romantic Suspense. After that, she became hooked on the genre. As hooked as she was, childhood fantasies still danced around in her head––little voices calling for her to write the young adult science fiction BEYOND series. To her, it was still romantic suspense…just on another planet!
Maureen is a wife. A mother of a crazy Corgi. A lover of mozzarella. And she truly believes there is a portal to outer space somewhere in her house.
I read this book and still wonder why I just didn't DNF it. I guess I wanted to believe it would get better and surprise me with its' ending. It didn't. The plot was good, the characters likeable, but it just didn't work.
To everyone around her contractor Briana Holt is successful, beautiful and going places. But inside she is a bundle of nerves that wants this development projet to be successful to prove she has worth. The trouble that could come from the U.S. Geological Survey could shut her down. She is not about to let that happen.
Strange tides and waves are plaguing the new development on the Windward coast of Oahu and USGS expert, Nick McCord, has narrowed down the cause to the development. It can't possibly be anything else. Dredging off the coast might cause this, but that is illegal to do, so it must be the evil development.
When these two meet the fireworks light up immediately. Instalust to the max. how they manage to go a week before tearing each other's clothes off is amazing. It must be that little thing called a conflict over Briana's project that made them keep their clothes on. Anyway, they team up and find the baddies and manage not to die in the process.
I found this to be a truly enjoyable and captivating read with characters I could relate to. My only negative thing would be that the geography isn't exactly correct, but hey I understand artistic liberty. I currently reside in Oahu and for the most part could see myself in the very places the writer mentions, with one minor issue, part of her geography is incorrect. Manale Bay is actually not on Oahu. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading additional material from this writer.
Maureen Miller’s Rogue Wave is a romantic suspense that takes place against the lush, exotic backdrop of the Hawaiian Islands. Ms. Miller’s style reflects that beautiful background, bringing an almost lyrical feel to the narrative, despite the harsher realities of the storyline, which includes conflict between modern beachfront developers and conservationists, along with some present-day pirating.
Ms. Miller presents her setting with a deft hand, describing scenery pithily, yet poetically: “Beyond Aloha Tower, the ocean was turning dusky rose under a violet twilight. The lights of the marketplace flickered on, and further beyond, a freighter moored at Sand Island became an illuminated hulk on the dark horizon.” With characters, she is equally clever, breathing life into not only the traditional good-looking, intelligent hero and heroine, but also the quirky side-kicks and troublesome family members.
The central conflict in Rogue Wave is a series of unexplained mini tidal waves that are threatening the coast of Hawaii. As the story unfolded, I was intrigued by the underlying mystery, and would have liked more of that. It seemed that the focus was more on the relationship between the hero and heroine and less on the bad guys’ shenanigans, which I wanted to know more about. In other words, the plot was more like that of a traditional romance than I personally would have liked, but for traditional romance fans, it would be spot-on.
From a technical standpoint, the story was well done, with no clunky transitions or shoddy plot holes, and no more than one or two typos. My one complaint was the frequency of point-of-view switches in the scenes between the hero and heroine. While I am a huge fan of multi-character POV, I prefer to spend more than a couple paragraphs at a time in any one character’s head, else I begin to suffer the onset of multiple personality disorder. That little detail aside, if you are in the market for an elegantly written romance mixed with an intriguing mystery, Maureen Miller’s Rogue Wave will not disappoint.
Words melt across the pages like butter in this romantic suspense. The writing is clear and interesting, never once was there a desire to skip a sentence, let alone an entire page. The characters have the most smug, yet playful relationship. Troubled pasts and the possiblity of an electrifyng futre keep the story intriguing. A very enjoyable read if you are a fan of the genre.

A real page turner!! I like that environmental protection is discussed! A subject close to my heart!! Suspense, danger, romantic chemistry, beautiful locations! Thanks Maureen for another good book!!
Rogue Wave is the second full-length novel I've read written by Maureen A. Miller offers. Like her other titles, Rogue Wave offers up a tale ripe with suspense, mystery, danger, and of course romance in an exotic locale. Though I have not perused this genre extensively, I feel I've come to know the archetypes found within. As such, the form of said books remain the same, even though the players and setting change.
In this book, our heroine is Briana Holt, purveyor of a residential development firm on the tropical island of Hawaii. Right off the bat, conflict arises when Briana discovers that the handsome man she meets on the beach turns out to be none other than a government inspector named Nick McCord who is determined to shut down her operation. Despite the tension between them, it's obvious that Briana and Nick are attracted to each other. Briana digs in her heels and prepares for and all-out legal battle with Nick who suspects that her land development is endangering the island. Little do they know that their private war is about to get more complicated. What follows is a heart-thumping tale that will thrust Briana and Nick into the middle of a deadly plot that could have lasting repercussions for them and the residents of Hawaii.
Aside from her wonderful authorial voice, what I enjoy best about Ms. Miller's novels are her intriguing characters. The people in Rogue Wave give us delicious slices of eclectic personalities all served up neatly with a bow between the covers of the book. As mentioned before, Rogue Wave, like other books in this genre, is at heart a romance novel. Despite all of the pulse-pounding action and mystery, there is enough heat between covers to keep fans of the genre happily plodding on through the unfolding plot.
Fans of Romantic suspense novels should definitely give this one a spin.
The visuals the author gives during the course of this book of Oahu - Hawaii are nothing short of stunning. From the moment the two main characters meet on the beach you are swept away.
There is so much more than just the beautiful location. Even though Nick and Briana meet as strangers on the beach and are instantly attracted to each other once they find out who the other is that’s nipped in the bud.
Nick McCord is a U.S. Geological Survey expert and he is on that beach because strange things have been happening off the coast and he concludes that it has to do with the developer of a new housing development being built right off the shoreline.
Briana Holt is the lead contractor for the new development called Manale Palms. She works hard to make it in a position that many women don’t hold and she isn’t going to let some guy even if he’s sexy as all get out from the USGS threaten her project.
The attraction between these two even though they are on opposite side in the beginning was powerful – even as a reader you could feel the heat between these two. Both being stubborn continue to try to find out what is causing all the anomalies which ends up putting them in danger.
This book just flowed from beginning to end – stunning location, hot romance, lots of peril and great secondary characters. Highly recommend it.
I won this book from Goodreads. First time I have read one of Maureen A. Miller's books. I found her a wonderful writer that will make you feel you are right there with her character's This was a easy read and keep you interested right from the beginning.
The story is set in Hawaii where we meet Nick who is a geological survey expert and Briana you is a beautiful contractor for a building site of new homes being built. Right from the start when these to meet there is fire works between them and mistrust.
They come together to find the mystery behind the unusual breaking waves and dead fish that suddenly appear near the building site. Something is going on just off the shore and it is changing tide near shore and affecting the sea life. This should not be happen and the mystery begins. We follow Nick and Briana as they try to protect the island they love and them selves.
You have everything you could want in a story. A little romance, great characters, suspense and mystery.
Brianna Holt while at the site waiting for the survey, she saw a man talking to himself, he turned and she jumped. They chatted until she was called to go back to work. she was in charge of the construction on Hawaii, one she lived on for her whole life. Brianna couldn't fail. Nick McCord was the geologist discussing with Naoli, her associate, she turned it was him. Nick wanted her to stop construction and give the land back to the native residents. They walked to the water and he told her he would be back with a lawsuit and she said try it.
I loved the story and how the characters were at odds. This was well written and I like the way the story was told. You won't be disappointed in reading this story.
This was another great book by Maureen Miller. Even though her books are all so different you can be sure you receive the same great writing. I love her descriptions of the surroundings. You truly feel like you are in her books. You feel what her characters feel. What I really love about this book (and her other ones as well) is the dialogue between the characters. For me, that is what moves the story so well. Nick and Briana are one hot couple who both have strong personalities. There was just the right amount of suspense for me. Maureen does a great job with the romance of the story. Sexy yet romantic and lovely. Highly recommend!
"I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads."
This action packed mystery based in Hawaii is both steamy hot, and plot rich. There are some clever twists and definitely the hands off policy fails in the end - just as we knew it should!
If you like a proper story to surround the romance, then this will definitely fit the bill.
A huge fan of Ms. Miller's other works, I'm excited to say that Rogue Wave hooked me just as quickly and just as deeply. Nick and Briana are characters that attract the reader and make you want to turn each page with drawn breath. It's thrilling, touching, romantic and everything that will make you go back and read it again. She makes you see the scenery described and at times you will smell the water, feel the breeze. This is another wonderful book by this author.
Bree is a land contractor building a cul de sac. Nick is a geologist who thinks Bree's construction was causing tides and dead fish to come up on shore. But when they find explosives on a boat, they must save themselves and stop them for destroying the ocean. Great story. A couple of the words confused me where it takes place in Hawaii. Good strong characters and excellent story line.
Good one. This has a backdrop of developers vs ecology in Hawaii. Not what you think, though. The duo in question have a lot more going on in their minds than that struggle. They both have deep-seated fears and hangups about relationships and trust. Good resolution, if a little improbable. Worth the read, though. Miller uses description very well and metaphor even better.
Too much of the main characters panting after each other and at the same time trying not to give in but then of course they are put in danger and realize how much they mean to each other and BAM
