It's hard to feel a painting by looking at its image in an ebook but overall it strikes me that watercolor paintings nowadays look so different than they used to be, in the themes, the subjects, overall feeling of grasping them, in techniques too. I dont usually read biography book of painters, this one feels okay for me, packed with a great deal of illustrations (though the arrangement of text and images is not so easy to follow but youre gonna look them up on the Internet anyway), each chapter represents works of Homer from his corresponding trips, path of the artist's development seems surprisingly linear, not much of his personal life is mentioned (which is fine for the book title doesnt suggest a biographical book in that sense).

Winslow Homer is a master of watercolor painting producing more than 600 watercolors in his lifetime; this volume, based on an exhibition of his works in 1986, is breathtaking collection with expert descriptions and commentary. Arranged chronically, from 1871 to 1905, the book captures the development of his artistry and technique. Life on and near the sea or lakes is the most common theme drawn from Homer's trips and vacations to England, the Caribbean and Florida. A few favorites include Weary (1878), The Life Line (1884), An October Day(1889), Three Men in a Canoe (1895) and Key West (1903).

This was an excellent overview of Homer's development and career, with helpful analyses of technique and style. It has very good reproductions, and it's accessible and educational to non-artists (like me). Well done.
