About the author

P. C. Kuttikrishnan, popularly known by his penname Uroob (Malayalam: ഉറൂബ്; 1915 – 1979) was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala state, South India. He along with writers like Basheer, Thakazhi, Kesavadev, and Pottekkatt formed the progressive writers in Malayalam during the twentieth century. Uroob is a recipient of Kendra Sahithya Academy Award (Malayalam) for his novel Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum

തലമുറകളുടെ കഥകള്‍ പറഞ്ഞ കൃതി. മലബാറിന്‍റെ ചരിത്രവും, ജീവിതരീതികളും, കെട്ടു പിണഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരവും എല്ലാം ഉണ്ട് ഈ കൃതിയില്‍ . എങ്ങനെ ആണ് ഇത്രയും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ ഇത്രയും തന്‍മയത്വത്തോടെ ഉറൂബ് എഴുതി തീര്‍ത്തത് എന്ന്‍ എപ്പോഴും അല്‍ഭുതം തോന്നാറുണ്ട്.

ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ വികാരവിചാരങ്ങൾ വിസ്മയകരമാം വിധം ഒപ്പിയെടുത്ത ഉറൂബിന്റെ വിഖ്യാത നോവൽ. ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ കഥ മുഴുവൻ ഇതിലുണ്ട്. മാപ്പിളലഹള പൊട്ടിപ്പുറപ്പെട്ട സമയമായിരുന്നു അത്. രാമൻ മാസ്റ്റർ വഴിയിൽവെച്ച് തന്റെ പഴയ കാമുകിയായ കുഞ്ചുകുട്ടിയെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. അവർ അപ്പോൾ ഗർഭിണിയായിരുന്നു. പ്രസവശേഷം അവർ മരിക്കുന്നു. അവരുടെ മകനായ വിശ്വൻ ഭൂമിയുടെ അറ്റം കാണാൻ പുറപ്പെട്ടു പോയി. അവസാനം ലക്ഷ്മിക്കുട്ടിയമ്മ വിശ്വനെ എടുത്ത് വളർത്തുന്നു. അവരുടെ മകളായ ശാന്തയെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും സ്വന്തമാക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. വിശ്വന്റെ അച്ഛൻ ആരാണെന്ന് കഥയുടെ അവസാനമാണ് പറയുന്നത്. ഒരുപക്ഷേ മലബാറിന്റെ ജീവചരിത്രം ആവാം ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നമ്മളിൽ എത്തിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

എന്റെ കാഴചപ്പാടുകളെ ഏറെ മാറ്റിമറിച്ച ബുക്കാണ് സുന്ദരികളും സുന്ദരൻമ്മാരും. ഇത് വായിച്ചു കഴിയുമ്പോൾ ജീവിതം അതി മനോഹരമായ ഒരു കവിത ആയിട്ട് നമുക്ക് തോന്നും, നമ്മടെ ജീവിതം അതിലെ ഏറ്റവും മനോഹരമായ ഒരു വരിയായും. എല്ലാരും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട അതി മഹത്തായ ഒരു കൃതി.

വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയാൽ താഴെ വയ്കാൻ കഴിയാത്ത പുസ്തകമായിട്ടാണ് എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയത്. വളരെ ചെറിയകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് പോലും വ്യക്തിത്വവും അത്മാവും നൽകി നമ്മെ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തുകയും മനസ്സിൽ ചിന്തകൾ ഉണർത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന നോവൽ
ഒന്നും രണ്ടും ലോകമഹായുദ്ധങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലായാണ് കഥ നടക്കുന്നത്ത

ചാർത്തിക്കിട്ടിയ കുട്ടി , ഒരു താളവട്ടം കഴിഞ്ഞു, ഭൂമിയുടെ അറ്റത്തേക്ക്, നീണ്ടുപോകുന്ന റെയിൽപാളങ്ങൾ, മരത്തടിയും മനുഷ്യരും ,കൂട്ടിലെ ചിറകടി,പ്രപഞ്ചം പിന്നെയും തളിർക്കുന്നു എന്നീ വിഭാഗങ്ങളും അവയ്ക്കു നിരവധി അധ്യായങ്ങളും 446 പേജുകളുമുള്ള ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ 19മത് പതിപ്പ് 440 വിലയായി പുറത്തിറക്കിയത് ഡീസീ ബുക്സാണ് . ഇതാണ് ഞാൻ വായിച്ചത്.

"എല്ലാ സുന്ദരികള്‍ക്കും സുന്ദരന്മാർക്കും" എന്ന് തുടങ്ങി ഈ രചനയെ കുറിച്ച് ഉറൂബ് പറയുന്ന വാക്കുകൾ നമ്മെ, ഈ നോവലിലേക്ക് ഉൽകൊള്ളിക്കുകയാണ്.

A heartwarming novel that discusses the major political events from the 1920s to the 1940s in Malabar - the Mappila insurrection, the Independence movement, and the Second World War - and yet confining itself to the lives and transformations of a few individuals, including the existential crises they face. Vishwanathan, Sulaiman, Radha, and Kunjiraman, the main characters of the novel, are are the product of their times. But this is not a strictly political novel. The inner crises in the characters of the novel lead them to take apolitical solutions at times, making them withdraw from political movements altogether, as seen in Vishwanathan and Radha. However, the discussions and reactions of characters in the novel through some tumultuous events in the history of Kerala help us in examining the various responses of people, going against one-dimensional history being spread by the right-wingers about those times at present.

What a wonderful piece of historical representation. Sundarikalum Sundaranmaarum moved along with the historical background of the 20s of Kerala where the influence of the First World War, Khilafat movement, Indian Independence Struggle, arising of the communist ideologies, etc. were quoted deeply in accordance with the people around the society. Vishwanathan is striking through the mind what he was done, digging eggs into the soil to flourish is something comical as well an eccentric version of him. He wandered through various places to find out the end or the edge of the world. Such a kind of notations was hiding something bigger in its aspect. Uroob, a legendary writer put out a legendary piece of work that will worth the reading of every literal aspirant.

I really liked the novel. The narration of the period was precisely done as it paints the land and the people in our mind. The novel explicitly describes the life of people and how their thoughts and acts impacts their and other's life. Eventually the novel implies everyone ks handsome and beautiful in each other's mind. Multiple later of story and their integration is done quite masterfully in this timeless classic. One of the best and top novels came from Malayalam language.

Incredible chronicle of a lot of lives that goes through a tumultous time in Malabar in the first half of the last century. There's so much detailing in the novel that you might miss. But I wish it was longer, so that I could digest a lot of it better but that's just my issue and not the book's.
