The Enormous Crocodile
The Enormous Crocodile decides that he wants a nice juicy child for lunch, horrifying the other animals in the jungle - his friend, the Notsobig One; Humpy-Rumpy, the hip-popotamus; Trunky, the elephant; Muggle-Wump, the monkey; and the Roly-Poly Bird.
Despite his secret plans and clever tricks, what the boastful crocodile doesn't know is that the brave jungle animals have plans of their own for him!
In the end, the Enormous Crocodile gets exactly what he deserves.

The Enormous Crocodile has a ravenous appetite, and he’s on the prowl for his favorite meal: juicy children. He develops a series of ‘secret plans and clever tricks’ to deceive the children so he can snatch them up, but the other animals in the jungle won’t stand for his shenanigans. Will this greedy crocodile ever learn his lesson?
Roald Dahl is one of our favorite story tellers. I can’t believe this is my first time reading The Enormous Crocodile, but did we ever enjoy it! It’s a short and simple story that’s laugh-out-loud hilarious. The illustrations fit the story perfectly too. What a bizarre ending!

Roald Dahl was incredibly prolific in the 1970s, and we seem to keep discovering more outlandish and unknown stories of his from that time period that are satisfying both my reading project and my daughter's sense of humor.
My 11-year-old is positively smitten with his work at the moment, and she and I gathered under the covers last night, leaving the horrors of the world news behind us as we embraced, instead, this “horrid hoggish croc” who has a penchant for eating children. (Which is somehow hilarious and not scary at all).
This particular story reads like an illustrated novella, rather than a picture or chapter book, and when we reached the exciting conclusion, my daughter sighed and said, “He's the best.”

My four year old loved it! Especially the bits where the croc is going to eat and munch all those sweet juicy children. :) NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM.
I think this is just one of those things natural to all children who already feel like prey with all these nasty adults hanging around. All of them want to eat you in a child's eyes. It's only natural because they see the adults getting eaten by jobs and spouses and the death of their dreams, so why not just imagine getting eaten by crocodiles, too? It's NATURAL!
That being said, this croc plays lots of nasty and cruel tricks in order to fill his belly, but fortunately, he happens to piss off most of the jungle creatures on his way to his playground meal ticket.
Alas! Poor stupid croc! And because this is A dahl tale, it gets really weird. :) Let's alter reality and turn it into an urban fantasy that winds up as a space opera, shall we? Right-On!
I love BBQ.

One of my childhood favourites that I was desperate to revisit.
It's a simple fun story of an Enormous Crocodile on the hunt for some children to eat, he believes each clever trick will prevail only to be foiled by various animals from the jungle.
One of the best aspects of this picture book is the wonderful illustrations by Quentin Blake.
Both Blake and Dahl fit so seamlessly together.
Whilst the story also features the Roly-Polly Bird and Muggle-Wump, who would later feature in The Twits adds to the enjoyment.

"Do you know what I would like for my lunch today?" the Enormous Crocodile asked.The Enormous Crocodile has a conversation with his friend, discussing the merits of eating children. His friend (Notsobig One) tries to convince the Enormous Crocodile to find something else...but Enormous cannot be persuaded.
Thus, determined, the Enormous Crocodile begins to put in place a plan to get his children...only during the execution of his plan, he makes several other jungle animals rather angry with him.
"Children are bigger than fish...You get bigger helpings."
And due to that anger, they are bound and determined to thwart his child-eating ways...but can a ragtag group of animals stand up against an Enormous Crocodile?
Ehhh...this one was just okay with me. Maybe I shouldn't have read Matilda or James and the Giant Peach first, cause my standards for Dahl are sky high.
But this book felt like it spent a while going for the shock factor (eating children) and waaaaaay too much time was devoted to the Enormous Crocodile monologuing. It just wasn't for me.

A great re-read!
Another short tale by the famous children's author, Roald Dahl, has me eager to review and spread the word. This would be an ideal story for the likes of many children, including Neo, who loves a good bit of humour. While lazing around one day in Africa, the Enormous Crocodile tells his not so large friend that he yearns for some children to eat. He is dismissed and told that there is no way he will be able to score such a delectable treat. Off goes the Enormous Crocodile, into the African jungles, where he encounters many other animals and tells them of his fiendish plan. Again, he is dismissed, but more out of a worry for the innocent children. From there, it is up to the Enormous Crocodile to concoct the perfect plan to get these children into his belly. Armed with the knowledge of the Enormous Crocodile's plan, the jungle animals do all they can to foil it, but will they be too late?! A wonderfully amusing read for children and adults alike that keeps the reader on their toes throughout.
Dahl is a wonderful storyteller, even if the tales can sometimes flirt with the edge of the macabre. He utilises some of the wonderful things that children know about their surroundings and injects just enough 'spook' to keep children guessing. Will the child be saved or has the Enormous Crocodile found a way to win again? Delightfully simple with a quiver full of laughable moments, Roald Dahl level of writing is surely missed in modern children's storytelling.
Kudos, Mr. Dahl for another wonderful story. I hope to keep reading a collection of your work and finding new gems about which I can be proud.

همه چیزایی که یک کتاب کودک لازم داره اینجا جمع شده .
داستانهای کوتاه که حوصله رو سر نمیبره ، طنز و شوخی، نقاشیهای خیلی قشنگ و رنگی جذاب که موقع خوندن یا شنیدن کمک میکنه بچه تصویر ذهنی بسازه، و کلی پیام اخلاقی غیر مستقیم. تازه آخر همه داستانها خوشه، همون چیزی که کودک بهش احتیاج داره (و این روزها یک بزرگسال)
باید همه کتابهای رولد دال رو بخرم. حیفه ندارمشون.

This is a short story about a very big and bad crocodile and some very lucky children. In my edition, it is lavishly illustrated by Quentin Blake in a manner that brings out the nuances of Dahl’s story.
Despite the discouragement of another (and smaller) crocodile, the Enormous Crocodile has his stomach set on a meal of children who live in a village not far from the croc’s river. The enormous one also has an inflated image of himself:
“I’m the bravest….”
“I’m the cleverest….”
“I have secret plans and clever tricks…”
After leaving the river he encounters a number of other animals whom he treats with contempt or tries to eat. This will prove his undoing as they become determined to not let the children fall for any of his “tricks.”
The illustrations show how close the children come to being the croc’s meal over and over again. Just a mite scary but most children will find it delightful.

The next day, she wanted to continue the story to the end.
The following day, I asked her if she liked the story, and she said, "yes."
I also asked if she found it "silly" or "scary." She said "both" with a smile.

My year of Roald Dahl is still going!
The Enormous Crocodile loves to eat plump, juicy little child, and he wants to eat as many as he can. But when the other animals in the jungle join together to put an end to this, the Enormous Crocodile learns a lesson he won't soon forget.

It's the beginning of the year and somehow I find this the right time for some of Roald Dahl's stories. Also, I have quite some catching up to do since I missed out on them when I was a child.
The story is the titular enormous crocodile who is a very nasty and evil croc that likes to eat children. The animal-lover in me doesn't like that very much because crocs, much like sharks, have far too bad a reputation which is why many are endangered. Nevertheless, this story is pretty old for one, and I think the main reason the author chose a crocodile was it's outer appearance (suitable for many disguises to get close to the unsuspecting children) anyway.
The story is about bullies and their ways of approaching victims and how watchful eyes and compassion from others can save the day - not to mention that the bad croc gets what it deserves.
As usual, the story had the signature illustrations by Quentin Blake, only in this version they were coloured in (not used to that, my other books have the original black-and-white ones that I actually prefer).
It is clear that Roald Dahl is one of THE master storytellers for children and I always enjoy his stories very much, no matter how short they are!

He's a rather large crocodile that likes to eat children so concocts elaborate plans to ensnare them. Except because he's not very nice to the other animals in the jungle, they're always there to thwart his plans. I mean, it does exactly what it sets out to do. Also, shout out to the Twits crossover.

رولد دال از کودکی، نویسندهی محبوبم بوده. الان بعد از چند سال، خوندنِ دوبارهاش (و اولین مواجههام باهاش بدون واسطهی ترجمه)، حسابی سر کیفم اورد. این مرد، همیشه حیرتم رو نسبت به خودش برمیانگیزه؛ از بس که خلاقه! یعنی هردفعه با خودم میگم خدااایی چطور اینا به ذهنت میرسههه؟ اونم این همه با جزئیات ریز و فراموشنشدنی. واقعاً دوستش دارم، هم خودش رو، هم ایدههای سمّی و جذابش رو! (البته ایدهی کلی این کتاب و خط داستانیاش، اونقدرا سمّی و خاص نبود -مثلاً به اندازهی ایدهی کتابی مثل جادوگرها یا انگشت جادویی- اما باز هم، خصوصاً توی پرداخت جزئیات، نسبتاً خلاقانه بود؛ مثلاً جاهایی که تمساحه قایم میشد، خیلی بامزه بودن برام.) 😅
و نقاشیها… مبهوتشون شدم. واقعاً جذاب و تودلبروان.
به نظرم کنار هم قرار گرفتنِ دال و بلیک یک مجموعهی شدیداً دوستداشتنی رو در ادبیات کودک پدید اورده. خوش به حال من که در روزگار بعد از رولد دال کودکی کردم. خوش به حالم.
(یک نکتهای که در تصویرهای این کتاب توجهم رو جلب کرد، حضور تصویر کودکان رنگینپوست در کنار کودکان سفیدپوست بود که این قضیه روی جلد کتاب هم مشهوده. اطلاعات تاریخیام خیلی خوب نیست؛ برای کتابی که ظاهراً چاپ ۱۹۷۸ئه، آیا حرکت زیبا و روبهجلویی در زمینهی برابری نژادی محسوب میشه یا مسئلهی عادیایه برای اون زمان؟ (هرچند که برخی منتقدان، خود رولد دال رو در زمان حیاتش، به دلایلی و بر اساس برخی از داستانهاش، به نژادپرستی متهم کردن، که البته رولد دال هم تکذیب کرده.)).
امتیازم به داستان (در مقایسه با بقیهی داستانهایی که ازش خوندم) ۳ از ۵ هست و به تصویرها ۵ از ۵ که میانگینش میشه ۴، خیرشو ببینید.

The Enormous Crocodile is on a mission… to find some children to munch. He tells all of his jungle friends his plans and they think he’s an awful mean crocodile so they’re constantly thwarting his plans of munching. The Enormous Crocodile gets more and more frustrated as he gets more and more hungry.
So, I’ve been on a Roald Dahl kick lately so one random Saturday morning I decided I wanted to read it. It’s definitely not my favorite of his that I’ve read so far, but it was still funny and the pictures were enjoyable. Not much more to say, it’s cute, it’s fun, read it.

'The Enormous Crocodile' (1978) - classic but perhaps lesser known book by Roald Dahl, with the customary brilliant illustrations by Quentin Blake.
Whilst perhaps not up there with Dahl at his absolute best ('Charlie and The Chocolate Factory' 'Matilda' etc.) nevertheless 'The Enormous Crocodile' is a great story, loads of fun and absolutely not to be missed.

That was a funny one, the enormous crocodile isn't as clever as he thought he was :D he should've kept his mouth shut instead of bragging about his plans, so he ended up barbecued :D

I had heard of the zany film, “Charlie And The Chocolate Factor”. It came out in 1971, before I was born. I caught it on satellite dish recently, in my 40s. Afterwards, I could laugh at Howard Wolowitz’s “Oompa-Loompa” joke on “The Big Bang Theory”! I discovered at Goodreads several years ago, that this is a novel by Roald Dahl. I learned that he is Welsh, whimsical, beloved, and in Heaven since 1990.
When one of our favourite charities reopened in September 2022, for the first time following the pandemic, I scooped up eleven of his paperbacks. My first Roald experience thus entails a 1977, 48 page picture storybook, with spare, exclamatory sentences repeating key phrases. Nevertheless, I am impressed and give it solid four star feedback. I admire the creativity, which extends to illustrator Quentin Blake. My honest reaction to a seemingly juvenile story is that these men are brilliant. My good friend, Kerri, helped me put a finger on one reason, remarking that the book’s tones comprise a successfully, artfully, delicious balance of scariness and funniness!
In the biggest brownest muddiest river in Africa (the author skipped commas there), “The Enormous Crocodile” tells every animal he sees that he planned to eat children for lunch. His bragging was fortunate, for they all could warn children about every crazy camouflage disguise!
The skill in this simple jaunt makes me positively eager to see how colourful Roald’s novels are. I cannot imagine his storytelling for grown-ups.

There's nothing really wrong with The Enormous Crocodile but it doesn't have any of the signature Dahl fun that one would expect. There's really nothing that differentiates this as a Dahl book over any other picture book. Blake's illustrations are great as ever.

I know RD had some unfortunate views, but his childrens books were wonderful.
I read this book to all of mine and they loved it. The sense of peril was palpable, but of course croc gets his just deserts in the end

The Enormous Croc is not as smart as he thinks he is. He has all kinds of clever plans to catch a juicy child or two for his lunch. But on his way to the town, he's stupid enough to tell every creature he meets where he is going and why. So when he tries all his ruses to fool the children, Humpy-Rumpy the Hippo and Trunky the Elephant and Muggle-Wump the Monkey and the Roly-Poly Bird rush to the rescue and foil his plans before he can snatch any kids. Finally, Trunky winds him up and sends him rocketing off into space, where he crashes into the sun and gets sizzled up like a sausage. Sssssssssssss. No more Enormous Crocodile. Boo hoo.
Normally I don't care much for Quentin Blake's illustrations, but the ones in this book are in color and add a lot of fun to the story.

"You are the greediest croc in the whole river."
The enormous crocodile has had enough of eating fish, he now wants to eat a child. "I'm going to fill my empty tummy with something yummy, yummy, yummy."- he shared his plan with the other animals, where they ended up preventing him doing so.
A fun story that follows along the lines of little red riding hood and the three little pigs, you are told his plan, attempts to go through with it and ends up being beaten in the end.
it felt very nostalgic rereading and I loved the illustrations throughout.

The enormous crocodile decides to have a human child for lunch and sets out for the village to pull tricks on the children so he can catch one to eat. As he makes his way there he brags to the other animals in the jungle about his plan. All of them are suitably horrified and come to the aid of the children as crocodile tries one tricky disguise after another. He is very clever, but the rest of the animals are determined to foil his plans. Great illustrations!

I don't think I've ever read anything by Roald Dahl that I didn't like. I am thrilled that my soon to be 4 year old daughter is now old enough to hear his stories at bedtime. We started with the Enormous Crocodile because it was short, illustrated, and new to us (the parents). It was a great read-aloud book! Our daughter wanted to know what would happen next and really enjoyed the story of the wicked crocodile on the hunt to eat up small children. A solid introduction to quirky stories and great writing!
