A certain unlikely hero...Only Komoe's class would let a regular conversation spiral out of control into a grand-scale hot pot party. It's an open question whether her students are a blessing or a curse. Meanwhile in London, the English Puritan Church's facilities should generally be a place of prayer and quiet contemplation...So who's going to take responsibility for the chaos unfolding in the sisters' dorms?! Back in Academy City, a certain railgun's mother has suddenly popped in for a visit, which is more than enough to make even a Level Five esper panic!

This volume builds up a lot of things for what is about to happen in the future, and honestly, it felt pretty refreshing and had a good introduction of the new third protagonist of Index. I thought it was interesting having to explore the respective thoughts and motivations of people like Kanzaki Kaori and what they are planning to do, and whether they should side with Academy City or the Roman Catholic Church in terms of the imminent WW3.

Also great to see aspects of what GROUP does, and how they are using Accelerator, Musujime Awaki and Tsuchimikado Motoharu to do their bidding because they all have people they want to protect and therefore don't have much of a choice in how to go about it. Nice to Tsuchimikado as a cool bro haha. I thought it was great to see the perspective of a worried parent - Misaka's mother, trying to find a way to get her daughter out of the city before war happens, whilst intertwined with the actions of Skill-Out (Level 0s) now led by Hamazura after Komaba's death. Trying to find a way out of this disaster, Hamazura tries to listen to orders to get rid of Misaka Misuzu but is instead stopped by Touma, which definitely was a great end to the volume. Honestly, I think this might be the second time I've been impressed with Touma and his "speeches" to the enemy. I guess it was because he understands very well the weaknesses of being Level 0 and the troubles accompanied with it, that he could firmly tell Hamazura that even if you are without powers, there is no reason to do all this and hurt people with powers as a form of selfish lashback rather than trying to improve the lives of Level 0s. It was satisfying to see Touma win that fight, and yet saddening to see Accelerator kinda "adapt" to his new life now. Good to see that even Misuzu is impressed with Touma and feels comfortable in leaving Mikoto in his hands though, because her giving up on taking Mikoto also means Academy City etc won't want to kill her anymore, so I'm happy about that I guess lol.

Overall, a good set up for the impending war whilst introducing Hamazura, and showing the new life of Accelerator.

War is the word around the city in this volume. It shows up everywhere, in the fears of the poorer students at Touma's high school, in the fears of the parents of Academy City's students, and is exploited by the skill-out gang. The ramifications of the Academy City invasion by God's Right Seat are very real and conveyed well.
This volume also introduced the 3rd main character of the series, rather unexpectedly too, with Hamazura Shiage.

This is the first book in the To Aru Majutsu no Index series. I haven't seen the anime yet so I can't comment on how similar or dissimilar the original books and the anime are, so I'll just review the book itself.

The author sets up a pretty interesting background, a Japan where phychic abilities have become commonplace. However instead of integrating the psychics into society, the govenment has created a walled city called Academy city where the psychics dwell. There they can work to increase their powers (and are highly encouraged to do so), but only the most trusted of individuals are given permission to leave.

The main character Toma is a low level psychic living in Academy City. His only ability is that he can nullify the psychic powers of others, but only with his right hand.

The plot starts when Toma meets a young girl dressed in a nun's outfit. her name is Index and she is an agent of the Church of Necessary Evil, a secret branch of the Church of England that deals with and combats magical disturbances. She has no magicial ability of her own, but has a photographic memory and has memorized 103,000 forbidden magical texts. Because of this knowledge she possesses she is being hunted by various magicians, and has sought Toma to protect her. Toma's unique ability to cancel psychic ability also seems to work for magical powers, and so he does his best to try and help her.

The world where both pychic ability and magical ability can exist and compete is interesting, but sometimes I get the feeling that the author is throwing too much on the plate at the same time. This is only the fist book (there are 18 volumes) though, so we'll see if the author does a better job of tying everything together.

Apparently reading about how Touman whines and reads lectures is even more painful than watching him do that in the anime series.

I'm reading a very clunky translation, but it's a fun read nonetheless.
