3.5 stars rounded up to 4. I love a good ghost story and I enjoyed the 17 in this book and wish there was more. The only criticism I have is that it could be edited a bit to read more smoothly, I had a hard time differentiating between the psychic and the scientist because it would switch every other paragraph with nothing to indicate a change in speaker. But I did enjoy the investigations and would've appreciated more of the photos they talk about in the book

As much as I have enjoyed Ron & Maureen's podcast, I just couldn't like this book.

The writers are grating and not very likeable in my opinion. They seem annoyed at having to go to these places, and quite irritated to be there - always complaining, often rude and looking for a reason to leave. Also, they always seem to find an excuse to cut and run just as things become interesting. Having said that, they do offer a limited insight which is entertaining and in general a fun read. That alone is worth picking this up.

Well-varied situations, but not the most compelling write-ups, more like highlights than full experiences. The team seems to consistently beat it out of there just as things get interesting!
Recommended with limited enthusiasm

Maureen seems like a truly talented and insightful individual. I enjoyed her detailed descriptions about the spiritual world and the paranormal. Ron, on the other hand, seems like a complete jerk. He constantly puts Maureen down, discredits her insights, and constantly acts like he knows all. He repeatedly mentions how he wants to hit or slap Maureen and how annoying he finds her. He seems like he has nothing to offer other than being a pompous ass. It’s a shame he’s considered the “head” of the operation when Maureen is a much better person with way more to offer.

I enjoyed the stories but Ron not so much. He comes off as dismissive, arrogant and just annoying. At times I wanted to stop reading because I couldn't stand his tone or what he stated was "joking.". Maureen, on the other hand, comes across as genuine, down to earth and approachable. I would love to see a book just by her in the future.

As a die-hard fan of cheesy ghost hunting TV shows, this book was everything I expected it to be. There were jump scares. There were psychic trances and possessions (well...obsessions). Nearly every other sentence was a supernatural-related pun.

The Ghost Chronicles sells itself on the fact that the lead investigator is a "down-to-earth" science major. You know these places are really haunted, because if he believes it, it has to be true. Did I mention he's devoutly Catholic, and had a near-death experience that made him believe in the supernatural?

The introduction of the book promises a comprehensive supplement of information, pictures, and videos if you look at their website while you're reading. I was incredibly disappointed - out of seventeen cases, only seven had any sort of additional information. Most of the pictures on the website were already in the book. Only two chapters had any sort of audio accompaniment - one was a slideshow with a voiceover, the other was a radio broadcast. There was basically no video footage.

I found that especially disappointing, since the second, third, fourth, and fifth cases were all filmed and aired on a news show, for a Halloween segment.

And that's the main problem with this book. Despite the whole "scientific investigators" they're trying to pull off, each case just ended up feeling hokey, due to lack of details. Invariably nothing happens that can be scientifically proven - there's a few pictures of shiny things on infrared camera, but that's seriously the most "scientific proof" you're given. Most of the cases are Maureen Wood feeling things and channeling the dead. In one case, they concluded that the place was haunted because Maureen had a feeling of a little girl being present, and then she did a tarot reading and decided to draw an extra card, and it was a card with a little girl on it.

Also, they seriously need someone to fix their website: http://www.ghostchroniclesthebook.com.... You've got to highlight the entire first paragraph on each page to be able to read anything at all.

The narrative jumped between Maureen and Ron with no warning whatsoever. Very often, the only clue I had that the perspective had changed would be because suddenly Maureen's name would appear, and she wouldn't be the "I" anymore.

There's very little detail on the cases themselves. I'd say a good half of each case was Maureen getting overwhelmed by spirit energy, and Ron rushing to make sure she was okay.

As far as ghosts go, I'll admit that I'm no skeptic - I don't believe they exist at all. I've never had any "experiences", even living in New Orleans, which my co-workers constantly remind me is one of the most haunted cities in the US.

I love hearing the stories, though. There's something about a well-told ghost story that just grabs you in. Maybe it's the fact that you're dealing with something not of this world. Maybe it's the lure of picturing the things that go bump in the night - the addictive rush of adrenalin when we get good and scared. Or maybe it's the fact that each story is a testament to life after death, a fable that humanity clutches onto as hope for something better - something more. Ghost stories stick with us because they assure us that death is not the end.

...hmm. That was a bit too thoughtful for one of my reviews.

Pole-dancing trannie ghosts!

There we go. Much better!

Title: Paranormal
Author: Ron and Maureen
Genre: Horror

Paranormal takes place in a mansion with a large woods behind it. The paint of the house is curling and there are little holes in parts of the walls. It's almost hard to believe someone lives there. Although the house looks harmless Ron and Maureen know not to underestimate and let their guard down no matter how friendly the house looks. In back there is an area where ashes spread out to put a man at rest. Surrounded by old trees and stumps the man was not satisfied and continues to haunt a single mom and her five year old daughter.
Ron leads a group of paranormal scientist in an online group. He has just accepted Maureen into the group and although she is curious about how Ron runs his program she is not trying to get to laid back like she normally does because she might just make another mistake like before when she let her curiosity get the best of her (again). Maureen has an inhuman ability to see ghost when other people can't.She can also allow them to be in her body and she can talk to them.
This team of paranormal investigators that around from house to house investigating homes and trying to get spirits to leave families alone so they can go back to a normal life style. The team is eager to have new members joining and new stories to be aired on TV and put in the news paper. The intensity in the room every time they do an investigation is high and with every second becomes higher. All the investigators worry for each others health during these investigations while worrying about themselves. Even though their safety is at stake they countinue to do what they love.
The authors message was to keep being a good person and help people even if there is nothing in it for you. Maureen demonstrates, when she goes to these houses she has to experience pain from the spirits but keeps her job because it is helping people live a peaceful life. She doesn't get a prize for what she does but keeps going to be a good person.
This book is suspenseful and it keeps you on the edge of your sear. The charecters were funny but serious cautious but seek adventure. This book blends the setting with charecters so we'll and that is what makes this a good book.

An interesting enough read if you are into shows like 'Ghost Hunters' and the like. The writing isn't the greatest as it is written by the actual investigators instead of a...er...ghost writer (no pun intended, I swear!). Might not be that interesting to you if you aren't already interested in paranormal events or ghost hunting, but if you are, you might want to give this a read.

i have no doubt that spirits exist but i didnt like the way the stories were portrayed. ron came across as a know it all and i felt always putting maureen down. i also didnt agree with all the way they communicated with the spirits - theres more to it then asking them if they want to talk. and using a pedulum doesnt work always. just felt that it was all hype with no real validity

interesting book. I'm a believer but sometimes I'm skeptical, so I question some of the things in this book. All in all it was a fun read. They have Concord's Colonial Inn in there, which I stayed at recently. Nothing happened while we were there, but you never know...

Good compilation of true ghost hunting stories, nice to have the consistency of authors (Ron and Maureen) throughout. It would have been nice if some of the stories were longer as the investigators seemed to leave whenever things got interesting!
