De typische Brabantse taal, die toch voor ieder begrijpelijk is, geeft het boek een aparte bekoring. Deze duidelijk als ontspanningslectuur bedoelde roman heeft al velen enkele genoeglijke uren bezorgd.

The second book of Toon Kortomms that I read. In this one we follow the life of the twins Hein and Mathieu Beekman and their friend Hendrik van Ham. The three Nederlanders grow somewhere in Gelderland or Nordbrabant and became adults approximately the time the 2nd World War started. We follow their adventures in rural Netherlands in the beginning and then in the war and occupied Netherlands, till the end of the war.

In the beginning the book was a bit boring, but when the three protagonists finished school, the story became more interesting. I like Toon Kortooms. He has a nice writing and it makes me travel to a Netherlands of the past. Having lived 7 years of my life in that country, I have a bit of a connection. I think it was a bit of a pity I read the book in german and not in dutch. Hendrik is from Friesland and obviously the dialect would be part of his talking, but that is lost in the translation. In addition, during the war there are discussions between the german-speaking soldiers and the dutch-speaking locals, with the miscommunications being almost lost in the translation.

Das zweite Buch von Toon Kortooms, das ich lese. Wir folgen das Leben der Zwillinge Hein und Mathieu Beekman und ihres Freundes Hendrik van Ham. Drei Niederländer wuchsen irgendwo in Gelderland oder Nordbrabant auf und sie werden Erwachsene, wenn der 2. Weltkrieg fang an. Wir folgen ihre Abendteuer bis Niederland frei wurde.

Am Anfang war das Buch ein bisschen langweilig, aber wenn die drei nicht mehr in der Schule gehen, wurde die Geschichte interessanter. Ich mag Toon Kortooms. Ich fand, dass es Schade war das Buch auf Deutsch und nicht auf Holländisch zu lesen. Hendrik ist Fries und wahrscheinlich ab und zu kommt der Dialekt, aber das ist nicht sichtbar auf Deutsch. Und während des Krieges sprechen die Soldaten Deutsch und die Niederländer Holländisch, aber das ist auch nicht so sichtbar, wenn das Buch auf Deutsch ist.

Mooi boek. Ik heb erg genoten van de sfeervolle plaatsbeschrijvingen en, als Belg, van het prachtige taalgebruik. Het werkwoord 'vatten' komt bijvoorbeeld heel vaak voor en het duurt niet lang voor je begrijpt dat 'hij viet' gewoon 'hij nam' betekent. Ik was blij verrast ook in het Noord-Nederlands een Romaanse invloed te ontdekken bij woorden als 'potage'.

Ik vroeg me af of het beeld dat we krijgen van de Duitse bezetter niet erg mild is. Als ik Mulisch' 'De aanslag', 'Wil' van historicus Jeroen Olyslaegers en 'De welwillenden' van Littell mag geloven, komen de families van Matje, Hein en Hendrik wel erg gemakkelijk weg met Hendriks daad van agressie. Ik verwachtte wrede represailles maar de Duitse commandant -met reputatie dan nog- werd met een leugentje afgewimpeld. De families en het dorp bleven gespaard. Ik was er zelf niet bij natuurlijk...

Ik ben blij dat ik het gelezen heb, alleen al omwille van de uitvoerige beschrijvingen van de turfstreek en haar fauna en flora.

Een geweldig boek dat ik 55 jaar geleden had moeten lezen. Mijn leraar Nederlands zwoer bij Simon Vestdijk maar die ging mij als 15-jarige boven de pet. Een onvergetelijk knap portret van een struise boerenzoon. Dit is een ideaal boek voor de jeugd en ook voor volwassenen. Humor, ernst en een aantal dolkomische verwikkelingen, afgewisseld met oorlogsleed en dierenliefde.

I grew up in Aruba and have been living in the US for almost half my life, so I always try to keep up with my Dutch by reading some old books I've had since high school and Beekman en Beekman is supposedly the top-selling selling Dutch novel of all time. Maybe it's the fact that my Dutch has gotten rusty, but I mostly found Beekman and Beekman to be uninteresting.

This book tells the story of twin brothers who get into shenanigans through most of their life first while growing up in De Peel (southern Netherlands) and then in boarding school. At first the butt of the jokes is their farmer friend Hendrik, and when the twins go to boarding school that burden falls on Bert. Divided up into short chapters that involve certain pranks or mischief, the jokes mostly fall flat as the stakes are either incredibly low, or the premise actually uninteresting. Again, it might be my rusty Dutch and my inability to pick up on the subtleties (sometimes I was unable to follow the details of the plot), and maybe these stories are all just unconnected and Beekman and Beekman is simply a collection of uninteresting events in the twins' life.

So think of this book as being a collection of shenanigans in the vaudevillian sense, where maybe for its time they were hilarious, but nowadays leave you scratching your head wondering exactly where the joke was.

Een ouderwets boek waardoor ik er met moeite doorheen kwam. Naar mijn mening leek het erg veel op de boeken die rond deze tijd werden geschreven zoals Pietje Bell, Kruimeltje en Dik Trom. In dit geval ging het om een ondeugende tweeling die wel een hart van goud had.
Maar de omgeving, de Peel in Limburg, was wel origineel
Een oud verhaal dat ik nu wat gedateerd vind. Hierdoor kwam ik er wat moeilijker door.

Zeer leuk boek, als je hier aan begint wil je het boek het liefst in een keer uitlezen. Je krijgt wel tranen van het lachen van begin tot eind.

Ik heb dit boek gelezen toen ik nog thuis woonde, dat is dus wel lang geleden.
Mijn moeder heeft het boek al heel lang.
Toen mijn opa overleed, ook inmiddels al heel lang geleden heb ik dit boek gekregen omdat ook hij dit boek had.
Een boek met humor zolang de tweeling jong is, heerlijke hollandse nuchterheid, vriendschap en trouw.
Een boek vol met ondeugende streken.

This book has a hilarious beginning, as most of our lives do, then as the brothers grow up, life becomes more serious for them, albeit still generously sprinkled with homour. This book is highly recommended for anyone who can read Hollands (Dutch, Flemish).

The story about the twin Matthieu and Hein Beekman. Marvelous and moving book. My mum used to read us this book when we were on holiday. Every year the same book. We never got tired of it. Still one of my favorite books.

Beekman en Beekman is hilarisch boek. Kost wel wat moeite om in te komen doordat de taal veranderd is in de afgelopen 65 jaar
