About the author

Larry Gonick (born 1946) is a cartoonist best known for The Cartoon History of the Universe, a history of the world in comic book form, which he has been publishing in installments since 1977. He has also written The Cartoon History of the United States, and he has adapted the format for a series of co-written guidebooks on other subjects, beginning with The Cartoon Guide to Genetics in 1983. The diversity of his interests, and the success with which his books have met, have together earned Gonick the distinction of being "the most well-known and respected of cartoonists who have applied their craft to unravelling the mysteries of science" (Drug Discovery Today, March 2005).

This book is a lot more interesting than one would first think. It's actually a very well reasoned study of human sexuality, and a discussion of the many different issues that are associated with it. The presentation is neither blunt, obscene, or overly scientific and obfuscatory.

Цей твір мене дуже порадував. Чим? Усвідомленням того, наскільки нам потрібна сексуальна освіта. Бо цей підручник був намальований та вперше виданий в 1999 році. В ньому містяться вичерпні відповіді на базові питання про те, що таке секс та як його практикувати з партнером(-ами). Якби усі люди прочитали це своєчасно, скажімо, в передпубертатний період (десь кінець початкової школи), суспільство було б геть іншим у найліпшому сенсі слова "інший". Було б менше непорозумінь між статями, більша толерантність до таких явищ як фемінізм а також ЛҐБТ, було б більша освіченість про захворювання, що передаються статевим шляхом, більша освіченість про репродуктивний аспект сексу та як запобігти небажаної вагітності. Ну і банальна анатомія 😅✨

Хоч цей мальопис і вийшов вперше в 1999 році, але майже уся інформація актуальна і нині. Я не можу бути впевненим за ті дані, які наводяться як статистика. Наприклад про відсоток ЗПСШ у чоловіків та жінок, про відсоткову пропорцію гомосексуалів та гетеросексуалів. Але я не можу бути впевненим, що в українському виданні 2019 року цю інформацію не корегували під актуальні дані, але най буде. Головне, що загалом уся інформація викладена у мальописі надзвичайно важлива та необхідна абсолютно всім людям.

Мені подобається, що цей мальопис викладає матеріал неупереджено. Враховані усі аспекти як з боку жінок, так і з боку чоловіків. Як з точки зору гетеросексуалів, так і гомосексуалів, бі тощо. Усе подається так, як воно є. Нічого зайвого, нічого не загублено. Мова не тільки про сам секс, а також банальна гігієна та зацікавлення у власному здоров'ї, як фізичному, так і ментальному. Намальовано усе в досить умовній стилістиці, яка більше нагадує карикатури. Тут є гумор, але він доречний та усе ще у рамках тематики, що робить цю роботу комплексно довершеною. Малюнок та текст мають гармонію. Дуже круто, що ми маємо таку важливу штуку українською.

This book has been lying around the house, unread, for so long I forgot why I ever got it or where it even came from. However, I've been trying to finish some half-read books, so I tackled this one. Aside from the fact that it is hopelessly outdated (must be 15 years old), it also suffers from a common graphic novel phenom: too many pictures for steady reading, but too much text for a comic. Also walks a fine line between "this is serious information, folks" and trying to be light-hearted and humorous. Frankly, if it takes 15 years to finish a book about sex, there's something wrong with the book.

While The Cartoon Guide to Sex is from 1999 and definitely out-of-date (particularly regarding the internet/smart phones/apps, LGBTQ+, the #MeToo movement, and diverse racial inclusion), it seems pretty progressive and otherwise-inclusive for its day. A good amount of information on sex and related subjects can be found here told in a 'funny' way, with corny cartoon characters and mostly silly jokes. It's a good enough read, with a mostly-likeable friendly feeling throughout balanced by occasional serious interludes -- though the frankly hideous cover and dated art style may put off many a younger reader.

How do you get people to learn more about sex education? Duh, you put it in comic book form.

Docking a star for its stance (or rather, no stance at all) on abortion, and a few innaccuracies here and there (understandably so! It was published only two years after I was born).

Another brilliant blending of the funny and the factual from Larry Gonick. Worth reading, even if you think you already know it all. You can't know it all until you know the funny side. Of course, some aspects of sex have no funny sides. At times this book is more text book than comic book. But still, cleverly done.

Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο υπηρετεί απόλυτα τον ρόλο του, δίνοντας μια αρκετά ολοκληρωμένη ιδέα γύρω από το σεξ. Είναι ρεαλιστικό, δίχως προκαταλήψεις και πάντοτε δείχνοντας σεβασμό προς όλες τις σεξουαλικές προτιμήσεις και φετίχ, χωρίς ποτέ να γίνεται πρόστυχο ή ''ακατάλληλο''.
Όντας ένα βιβλίο που γράφτηκε εν έτη 1999, με εντυπωσιάζει η πρωτοπορία του και ειλικρίνειά του. Η Ελλάδα έχει υπάρξει ένα ''παλιομοδίτικο'' έθνος γύρω από την σεξουαλικότητα και τα θρησκευτικά πιστεύω, αλλά βλέποντας τη lgbtq κοινότητα να παρουσιάζεται ως φυσιολογικό κομμάτι της κοινωνίας, ακριβώς όπως θα έπρεπε να παρουσιάζεται και όχι ως ένα <<ατύχημα της φύσης>>, μπορώ να πω πως με κέρδισε ιδιαίτερα.
Το βιβλίο καταπιάνεται με πολλές μεριές του σεξ: το σεξ ως κομμάτι της φύσης και της ανάπτυξης, το σεξ ως μέσω απόλαυσης και ηδονής (έχοντας πάντοτε σχόλια γύρω από θρησκευτικές απόψεις που εναντιώνονται γύρω από αυτό), το σεξ και πως αυτό διαμορφώνει την προσωπικότητά μας.
Αναφέρεται στις προκαταλήψεις που περιτριγυρίζουν τα δύο φύλα και τις παρεξηγήσεις που έχουν δημιουργήσει οι έννοιες <<ανδρισμός>> και <<θηλυκότητα>>, ενώ γίνεται φυσικά αναφορά και στον ανδρογυνισμό και τον αυνανισμό.
Με μεγάλη περιεκτικότητα και ακρίβεια, επεξηγεί τόσο τις λειτουργίες των γεννητικών οργάνων όσο και τους τρόπους αντισύλληψης, ενώ ενημερώνει και για όλα τα αφροδίσια νοσήματα.
Πολύ σημαντική θεωρώ την αναφορά στον σεξουαλικό εξαναγκασμό, τον βιασμό και γενικότερα τις σεξουαλικές επιθέσεις των οποίων ο αριθμός φαίνεται συνεχώς να αυξάνεται.
Πρέπει να παραδεχτώ πως μερικά σκίτσα δεν ήταν καλά δοσμένα, αλλά πέρα από αυτό πιστεύω πως είναι ένα πολύ καλά δομημένο ''εγχειρίδιο'', το οποίο προσωπικά μου άνοιξε τα μάτια σε ζητήματα στα οποία οι γνώσεις μου ήταν λιγοστές ή ακόμα και μηδενικές.

It was fun starting out, but by the time we got to contraceptives, the tone had turned and the rest of the book was sort of dull. STDs, etc. Okay, that stuff is important, but I had hoped topics like that would be only detours on a more entertaining journey. Instead they became the unexpected destination.

Still, I really liked Mother Nature and the Etiquette Elf.

Even though I've been celibate for 9+ years at the time of reading and didn't learn many new things from this book, The Cartoon Guide to Sex is still rather comprehensive and also has some really, really funny illustrations.

A+ Strongly recommend.

I would use this book as an additional text in my classroom if it were updated to reflect some recent medical literature.

Really would have appreciated some inclusion of asexuality, but as is, they took care to include queer people, including trans folks, and a wide diversity of people in the illustrations. Worth reading.

Excellent! Extremely thorough, comprehensive and non threatening way to approach, explore all the facets of sex. Although it may take some open minded and progressive schools to adopt this literature, it would be a fantastic addition to sex education programs.
