Dr. Hyman also works with fellow leaders in his field to help people and communities thrive--with Rick Warren, Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Dr. Daniel Amen, he created The Daniel Plan, a faith-based initiative that helped The Saddleback Church collectively lose 250,000 pounds. He is as an advisor and guest co-host on The Dr. Oz Show and is on the board of Dr. Oz's HealthCorps, which tackles the obesity epidemic by educating American students about nutrition. With Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Michael Roizen, Dr. Hyman crafted and helped introduce the Take Back Your Health Act of 2009 to the United States Senate to provide for reimbursement of lifestyle treatment of chronic disease. When I started listening to The 5 Forces of Wellness audiobook, I had no idea who Mark Hyman, M.D. was. In fact, I didn’t expect to like the book, which seemed like just another boring diet. In fact, Dr. Hyman states that he has never put anyone on a weight loss diet, but that those who follow his plan often do lose weight. Also the audiobook reader, Dr. Hyman is energetic, likes to joke, and is sometimes sarcastic. His style turned what could have been dull statistics into an interesting and motivating series of stories. Not available as a print book, this audiobook is a good introduction to Dr. Hyman’s programs and his personal style, which I found quite entertaining.

I like that he cites case histories, both from his own patients and from researchers, to support his health plan. I also like his emphasis on the individual: each person is genetically unique, has at any given time systemic weaknesses, and can be treated most effectively with emphasis on nutrition and detoxification in that particular area. When I did a bit of research, I learned that this doctor also wrote the “Ultrametabolism” books, which have been popular over the past few years at the library where I work.

Hyman breaks the areas of un-wellness into the broad categories of malnutrition, inflammation, toxicity, oxidation, and metabolism. In these categories he talks about stress, environmental factors, the body’s biochemistry and what can go wrong, nutrition and nutritional supplements, immune response, genetics-based testing, and nutrigenomics—how good nutrition can affect gene expression for optimum health.

Among Hyman’s recommendations are eating lots of fruits and veggies, plant-based proteins, and healthy fats; cutting out sugar, refined carbs, and fast foods with additives; taking a multivitamin daily; consciously relaxing every day; getting exercise 5 days per week; and getting tested to find your own personal biochemical needs/deficiencies. Unfortunately, the online “Ultraprevention Questionaire” cited in the book, to determine which of the 5 areas to focus upon for your particular needs, seems to no longer be on Hyman’s website.

The 5 Forces of Wellness contains a wealth of information, not all of which can be parsed by the average reader (or even someone like myself with a degree in biology). Still, the book is entertaining as the doctor explores various health problems and their nutritional treatments from several perspectives. The repetition helps the reader to retain the basic concepts. The author seems very sincere about helping people achieve optimum health, in fact a bit fanatical about it. Readers who enjoy the audiobook format and are interested in feeling better can get some good ideas by giving this book a listen.

Wonderful book that explains wellness in a way most doctors don’t. I loved the way he expressed the complex ideas and information in an easy to understand way that really makes the reader question what they know about wellness and want to learn more. Over all great book and easy to listen to.

Lots of good information but also lots of annoying repetition.
