In Cannes with her ambitious actress friend Diana, poor Cherry was feeling unhappy. She was shy and unassuming, and not happy in the company of men. So it was unfortunate that Lucien Tarascon, should have got the wrong impression of her.
Diana Dermot was an aspiring actress and a travel agent. She had a last minute cancellation for rooms in Cannes, France during Film Festival week. She took her friend and roommate, Charity or 'Cherry' as she liked to be called. Cherry was uncomfortable at Cannes. She felt like she was being watched and she was getting tired of Diana's mood swings and her constantly telling Cherry that she was putting a wet blanket on her time in Cannes. Cherry was upset that the buys that Diana was flirting with all seemed to be old men. They went downstairs to dinner and were invited to eat with Marcus Holliday, another older American film producer and his friend, Monsieur Lucien Tarascon, Duc de Marchiel. Lucien was the person that Cherry felt had been watching her during the week. During dinner Lucien mentioned that he wanted Lucien's backing in order to produce a new movie. Lucien agreed to do the movie in exchange for Cherry pretending to be his fiancée. Diana guilted Cherry into agreeing to accept the job. She told Cherry that she would be helping out others that needed work. She also told Cherry that if she didn't, she wouldn't have a place to come home to. The lease was up on their apartment back home and she wasn't renewing it. Diana then packed up and told Cherry that she was leaving Cannes with Marcus. Cherry had no place to go so she felt she was left with no option but to accept Lucien's offer. Lucien told Cherry that he was the guardian of a teenager that was the daughter of a close friend. The daughter, Mistral, had determined that she was in love with Lucien and he wanted a fiancée to put Mistral off. He took Cherry to see Mistral at the beach and she proved to be rude and jealous. Lucien picked up Cherry after Diana took off and she was packed up. He took Cherry shopping for clothes and to purchase an engagement ring. Cherry told him that the extravagance was unnecessary. He told her that because of his status, it was. He then took Cherry out to dinner. She was very much taken with the fact that she was being spoiled and loved it. Cherry's father had died when she was young and her mother had remarried. Her stepfather, Ryan, was abusive to her mother and he didn't like Cherry much either. He had raised his boys to be abusive towards women and her sisters were treated like slaves, along with her mother. Cherry left home as soon as she was able. She wanted to be loved and have a family of her own but she couldn't live at her own home any longer. Lucien then took Cherry to Paris and they spent the day walking around Paris as tourists. Lucien took Cherry to a clothing maker to get more clothes for Cherry too. The entire time they were together, Lucien treated Cherry as an actress playing a part. Cherry was falling in love with Lucien. The dressmaker suggested to Lucien that with his lifestyle he really needed a wife and she was happy for him. At the end of their time in Paris, Lucien asked Cherry to marry him and she agreed. Lucien took Cherry to his home a week after they were married and their plane was met by Mistral. She was furious and her comments angered Lucien and he told her that he was married and she needed to keep her opinion to herself. She would just have to accept the fact that he was married. Cherry met his staff. They then consummated their marriage and Cherry was under the impression that he had married her to have children. He thought that she was pining after a previous lover that had treated her badly. Lucien then took her to Monaco to introduce her to the public and deal with the paparazzi. Lucien told her to use her acting skills and pretend they were just their to have fun. He told her that he had a surprise for her inside the casino. They went inside and met a few of the people there. They went upstairs and Diana and Marcus were there waiting. Lucien had thought it would be a good surprise. It didn't work out that way! Marcus told Lucien that he didn't want to work with Diana anymore. She was disrespectful, moody and never showed up to work on time. Diana was furious and envious of Cherry and taking some of her comments out of context, told Lucien that she wasn't an actress and that she had just wanted to get married to anyone for a place to stay and to get a family. She married Lucien because he was the owner of one of the world's largest perfume distilleries. it made her look like a gold digger. Lucien was furious and took Cherry back to the yacht they were staying on. He dismissed the captain and crew so he could talk to Cherry in private. Cherry thought that Lucien was furious at her for misleading him. Lucien told Cherry that he figured out a long time ago that she wasn't an actress. No one could act so well and the blushes were something that she couldn't fake as an actress. He married her because he was in love with her and had manipulated things so that Cherry would be forced to spend time with him. He hoped that with time, she would fall in love with him as much as he was in love with her. She told him that she was already in love with him. He then gave Cherry a new perfume that he had created for her. He named the perfume 'Ma Cherie'.
