I discovered Hot Winds from Bombay (1987) on a vintage HR Facebook group in a post about covers, and I was intrigued by the title. Found it was KU so read it. I tried so hard to like this book but sadly no… it’s quite peculiar.

I was interested in the story because of the background and characters. The heroine in the story, Persia is the daughter of a Maine sea captain; my maternal great great grandmother Sarah, was the daughter of a Massachusetts sea captain about the same time.. mid 1800s. In the beginning of the story I found the details of this life interesting!

Nevertheless, the story itself was beyond weird. The MCs are instantly attracted to each other … she’s 16 and Zack is a 26 year old sailor .., they attempt to elope, disaster, they’re separated; 10 years pass, they accidentally find each other again… she’s just been married by proxy; Persia and Zack sail to India where she meets her husband who’s a totally crazy perverted violent minister. Of course Zack rescues her at the end of the story.

Thru out the story they frequently call each other “darling”… got turned off reading it after a while. Pacing was off… way too much time spent on when the MCs were apart; the dreadful ghastly perverted stuff about the minister husband… I had to skim and barely read… it was way too much.

And, I’ve probably written way too much about this book. It’s a 1 star book… I only gave it 2 stars cuz of the NE setting and the sea captain lifestyle. ⭐️⭐️
