Space 1999 was a not-really-very-good television series fifty or so years ago and the second season wasn't as good as the first. We watched it because there was no other sf on television, and it often looked cool. A variety of authors of the time did novelizations of the first season in ten volumes, and Michael Butterworth wrote adaptations of the 24 second season episodes in a six-volume series. There's nothing especially noteworthy about most of them; they vary in quality as did the scripts upon which they were based. The main thing that sticks out about this first one was the introduction of the cast member, Maya. The episodes in this one were New Adam New Eve by Terence Feeley, The Rules of Luton Charles Woodgrove, The AB Chrysalis by Tony Barwick, and The Metamorph by Johnny Bryne. (No, not -that- Byrne, the English one.) Anyway, Space 1999... a brief nostalgic visit to near-forgotten television.
"Space 1999" year 2 contained some of the worst scripts ever produced for TV, and they are poorly novelized in this set of 4 episodes vaguely linked together. Not really worth your time.
Adaptations of four second-season episodes, so essentially this is a collection of four novellas rather than a novel.
Space:1999 was always inconsistent in its quality (though the design of the base & the Eagle spacecraft were always cool). This book is, thus, like the series in that it's a mixed bag. There's some good drama and action and some solid SF concepts, but it was often poorly executed because of overwrought dialogue or a lack of internal consistency. Still, I enjoyed reading this. The TV show was on when I was a kid and there was little SF on TV, so I pretty much watched every science fiction show and was young enough to overlook or simply not notice faults. For me, "Planets of Peril" was a kind of nostalgic experience. And the author is competent in his prose and story construction, even when the material he has to work with is sometimes a little silly.
The stories include an adaptation of the second season premiere, in which shape-changing alien Maya joins the cast; dealing with a planet that was generating shock waves that would destroy the moonbase when it passed by; the humans exploring a garden-like planet and being condemned to death for eating a berry; and and encounter with a god-like being who claims to BE God.
