I’ve always wondered what would happened if the slaves knew that they outnumbered their oppressors and chose to rise up. Turns out that was an actual even that killed many and did a lot of damage.

Second volume is gratifying in the sheer violence leveled against the masters by Turner and his company of liberated slaves, vengeance is swift and total; some form of vindication is achieved.

The illustrations remain compelling, but the narrative text, drawn from historical primary sources, makes clear in the language of the day the motivations of the players in the conflict.

Again, this should be in every high school library, and taught in curriculum in the same way Maus is used to discuss the Holocaust with young people.

If you dig graphic novels and black history, then this is where it's at. Now, if you're afraid of scaring you're so-called liberal white friends by all the slaves' uprising and killing white folks, then you might not want to give this as a gift to them (or you might depending on what kind of day you're having). In spite of me being flip, the book is historically accurate. What the book doesn't mention is after Nat Turner's execution, his body was cut into sections and made into bars of soap so he would not be buried and he'd never have a grave, so he couldn't be a remembered/celebrated martyr/example to other enslaved people. Just something to think about...

Awesome, brutal history is on display in its rawest form in this graphic adaptation. I was, however, sorry that my library only had volume #2.

Utilizing the actual text from "Nat Turner's Confessions" Kyle Baker's masterful illustrations bring it to life in all it's startling, righteous, and gruesome horror.

Highly recommended!
