Hwæt: A Little Old English Anthology of American Modernist Poetry plays wonderfully with the idea and practice of translation. Here, Glassgold translates back, from Modern English to Anglo-Saxon or Old English. This attempt at back translation produces, remarkably, some wonderful poems, but perhaps most importantly it forces us to consider what this process of translation really is, whether it is possible at all. Some of the more notable poems: Berryman's "Dream Song 315 / Swefnsang CCCXV," Moore's "Poetry / Leoþweorc" and Pound's "A Girl / Mæġdenċild." Here is Pound's "In a Station of the Metro" or "On Tille of Þæm Underweġe." "Seo ætiewednes of þissum hleorum on þære drafe; / Blostmabldadu on watum, blacum boge."
