Catherine Mulvany’s life is a fairy tale. Okay, a fractured fairy tale. At age eleven she fell hopelessly in love with a little town in eastern Oregon. With a population under fifty—counting the cats and dogs—the town didn’t even qualify as one-horse, but the place had character. Character and an abundance of arkayesses.
Never heard of an arkayess? Neither had Catherine. But on the first day of her visit, she became intimately acquainted with one particularly gruesome member of this species—also known as the road-killed snake. Arkayess. RKS. Road-killed snake. Get it?
She did. The hard way.
Catherine was walking along a side street, minding her own business, when the orneriest boy in town came riding down the road on his bike, swinging a dead snake like a lariat. “You’d better run, kid,” he yelled. “I’m gonna wrap this arkayess around your leg!”
She ran.
He followed. (Are you getting that whole fairy tale connection? Knight on a white charger equals boy on a bike?)
When he got close enough, he took aim, then let that snake fly. It cartwheeled through the air with deadly accuracy to coil itself around her bare leg.
The boy was almost as shocked as Catherine; he hadn’t expected to hit his target. So to make it up to her, he proposed...and it only took him nine years to do it. She accepted, of course, and they’ve lived happily ever after in their very own castle.
All right. So it’s really a three-bedroom ranch house, but it has an irrigation ditch out back, and that’s practically a moat, right?
In August of 1972, Ian McPherson was double-crossed and because of it, he became disabled and went to prison for the next 30 years. Don't worry, this is all covered in the prologue.
Fast forward to 2004. Homeless and young Tasya Flynn squeaked her way into a unknown house through the dog door. She was on the run; she needed some food and rest before taking off again. What she didn't know was that the now-61 year old Ian was at home and contemplating shooting himself.
Run No More was a killer-thriller, jewel thief fantasy, time-travel/alternate reality, training-an-apprentice contemporary romance all rolled up into one. The central theme was payback is hell. If it sounded busy, it was.
Tasya was abducted several years ago and, finally, managed to break free. But 'Richard' aimed to get her back. Ian with his trusted Portuguese manservant, Paulinho, became her friend. Then more.
The story was divided into two parts: the present and the past/alternate reality. I read the entire first story with the expected ending. I knew the author had to write it this way. Besides the fact that the plot included several side-stories there was the glaring -don't look if you plan on reading the story!-
I am not going to rate this book because I skimmed the second story; I needed closure.
2005 Readers Choice Winner. This is a romance thriller with a little bit of magic, and myth interspersed. It is one of those rare adult books with minimal inappropriate language and sexual content that is not LDS or Christian based.
In summary, it is about a young woman, Tasya, who was abused and finally frees herself from her captor. While trying to feed, cloth, and support herself she breaks into the home of a crippled retired cat burglar. He takes her in, helps her heal her wounds and takes her on as an apprentice to help him reap revenge on his previous apprentice. I would recommend it for a long flight or beach book. A page turner and keeps your attention. Nothing exceptional literary wise, just an entertaining book- a bit predictable but most of these books are for me.
I loved this book in so many ways. I can't even talk about it without spoiling it. This story was filled with surprises you won't expect. Just when you think you know where the story is going, a twist pops up. I can honestly say, I've never read a romance like this one!
It's hard to even leave this with a short review. I want to rave about all the surprises and all the aspects I enjoyed. But I really don't want to ruin it, so I'll just leave it at this. The book is well written, exciting, not at all boring. A definite page turner.
Really dumb. Because it was a "Reader's Choice Winner," I stuck with it for awhile. I can't believe this book was chosen as a winner or anything.... It might work as a substitute for Ambien!
I was so into reading this book I ended up calling in sick to work so I could finish it. I loved it. This is my favorite of all her books. It's interesting and fun. Great if you are in the mood for something light-hearted.
