She had one week - and that was all.
It was Abby's one chance to turn back the clock to the carefree days when she and Jake had explored his island retreat in the Bahamas. Abby had loved Jake and she had lost him. And not just Jake, but Dominic, the child of their love. But Jake was no longer the man she had known; he seemed like a disturbing stranger. Abby knew it was foolish to think that the traumas of the past could be resolved, yet she couldn't quite squelch that faint hope within her....

Re Indiscretion - Anne Mather contributes her own version of the H marrying another woman trope with the twist that the h gets preggers and the H gets custody of the baby - even tho they aren't married - for a somewhat disjointed and lackluster HP expedition.

This book starts with the h being called to the H's island in the Bahama's by the H sister. It seems the H had a heart attack or something and is in hospital. Because there is a chance of death, the h needs to come care for her son, but she only has a week to connect with him.

The back story here is that the h and H were a couple for two years, about six years earlier. The h was a model who had a rather unscrupulous agent who blackmailed her into a weekend of sex in order for her to keep modeling. The experience was not great and the h had some trauma. The h was an orphan with no skills and so she really needed the jobs in order to support herself. This all occurred BEFORE she met the H.

When she was 21 she met the H and they became lovers, her skeevy slime slurper agent blackmailed her into staying with his agency or he would tell the H about their supposed "affair". The H knew that the h had a very bad experience prior to meeting him, but when the h gets preggers and the slime slurper agent lies and tells the H that A) the h has sleeping with him for two year and B) that the h wants to terminate the pregnancy. The H, despite believing the skeevy slurper drove an ex of his to her death, instantly believes the agent's lies.

The H marries one of his OW (so really what was the difference between the two of them if the h really was sleeping around,) bribes a judge or two and gets custody at birth of the h's baby. Citing that since the h is single and a model, she won't have the ability to properly care for the child, the H bribes or bullies a Bahamanian judge to get custody and takes the infant away right after birth.

I have to say this is where the book completely lost me and it doesn't get any better after this. The h had her son in England, they weren't married, supposedly she was sleeping with multiple men--so why did she just not say she did not know who the father was? AM doesn't believe in DNA testing, so it was an obvious easy out.

More importantly, the h and the baby are in ENGLAND, a Bahamanian judge (tho it is vaguely stated that is who decided,) would have no custody jurisdiction and in ENGLAND the H has NO paternal rights period. The son is the h's child as she is a single parent. So that was a hurdle my belief couldn't jump.

To top it all off, the H married and then later divorced a woman who had no interest in being a mother, he traveled ALL the time and so the son is raised by a nanny. The h did have modeling assignments, but she also had child care - so the whole scenario is just to create drama - like AM needs to stir the pot with this sewer crawler of an H.

Anyhows, the H makes sure that the h's contact with her son is limited. But now he is ill, hopefully dying and the h gets to spend a week with her son. Except the H discharged himself and of course the h is still spineless enough to crawl to him as she has never even heard of calcium, much less been exposed to such a plot harming substance. Despite repeated verbal and physical abuse, the h is practically gagging for the H and his disdainful contempt. She also gets along great with and bonds with her son. Until her week is up and she has to go back to England.

The H eventually follows and claims that he talked to the slime slurper agent, cause sewer sludge likes to clump together, and he totally believes the h is innocent of sleeping around and maybe he was a bit vindictive when he took her son away. The H really needs a rehabilitative healing poke with his pike and after a good hammering with the h's enthusiastic cooperation, he is sure the h can hang around with him and his son for the big HEA.

I seriously believe that AM was on major drugs or hanging with Sara Wood for the writing of this one. The plot was so contrived and obviously manipulated that I just couldn't accept the basic premise, much less anything that went on during the story line.

Everything, from the H's illness, to his custody of the son, to the lack of relationship development and continual H punishment of the h in the current timeline seemed fake and only there to fill in some page space cause AM had a deadline.

This is HPlandia and a whacktastic plot is not unusual, but usually there is a little more effort to make the unbelievable seen normal and this one just did not have it. All in all there are better HP outings out there and this one just isn't worth the frustration or the time it takes to make sense of it. Read this if you're tempted, but don't expect a lot of value if you go there.

Okay this showed up from Amazon and I thought I don't remember ordering that but I must have so I read it. OMG! Why??? I hated this book. He married another woman and he took her son away and I was thinking I couldn't have ordered this. I would never read this book. My finger must have accidentally one clicked it. I am so pissed at my finger. I kept waiting for the part where he said, I never slept with anyone else, he always loved her and that his marriage was just a sham and... It never happened. Jake the H was awful. I just wish I could unread it. Unfortunately I can't but I can warn someone else not to. And her rapist, oops I meant ex-boss, was a pig. Blackmailer, liar, pig. But the H believes every word out of his mouth but he wouldn't believe her. I was just like if either one of them would talk to each other in complete sentences this book could have been avoided. And just FYI, my finger has been put in time out for at least an hour. Bad finger.

The back of the book sounded so good, but alas I could NOT stand this book!! It was a mess! It wasn’t enough that Jake took Dominic from his mother practically after birth. He had already married another woman before getting custody of the child. No explanation was given in regards to this woman and how she so quickly came upon the scene. Apparently by him being married and able to provide a stable home life for the baby it was better than Abby’s single life of modeling and having to pay someone to take care of Dominic. YET by Dominic’s own admission his father was hardly ever home and he had a nanny!! Father of the year rarely allowed Abby to see Dominic until he was two years old! He tells her when they meet again, “you have this sick notion that a child—that a child belongs with its mother, no matter how—how undesirable that mother might be, and nothing—nothing’s—nothing’s going—to—shift . . . “ Jake is not above lying and manipulating to get what he wants, but I guess that makes him an AWESOME father, huh?

Jake’s illness was never fully explained – I’m guessing it was just a plot device to get Abby there.

Jake and Abby met 8 years ago and had a 2 year relationship until they broke up which was stupid! She was 21 when they started and he had to have been at least 12 years older. One would think with age comes maturity . . . . well one would be wrong in this instance!

Jakes says, “I don’t forget anything.” He forgets a LOT of very important things!! Abby’s first experience w/ sex was w/ her agent and he was at least 30 years older than her! He blackmailed her into it as well. She is embarrassed by it because she agreed to it to save her job. She was a freaking orphan w/ no prospects of course she would be ambitious. Abby tells Jake she is not a virgin and he pieces together that she was hurt the first time and that it was a long time ago. (that time was w/ Max, her agent) Jake says, “God how could anybody hurt you?” He is willing to kill whoever hurt her. He also tells her that he would never hurt her. Someone get the man a gun so he can kill whoever hurt her and then turn it on himself!!

Max threatens to tell Jake about her time w/ him and of course she hadn’t ever told Jake the full fact of that. It happened before Jake had ever come on the scene. I don’t see Jake volunteering his escapades before he got w/ her. Max lies and tells Jake that Abby went to get an abortion and Abby runs off to tell Jake about her fist time w/ Max because of course Max has her believing that is what he had told Jake. She didn’t know that Max said she had got an abortion so her news was new to Jake. She convinces him no abortion, but he is still pissed she slept w/ her agent-end of their relationship. Of course he forgets their conversation and her actions before he dipped in her pot earlier. Did I say he claims to not forget anything? Jake credits Max w/ telling him the truth: “As I see it, he only told the truth. Something—something you could have done, any time—any time in the two years we were together.” Max did NOT tell him that though, Abby told Jake about her sleeping w/ Max and Abby KNOWS she told him. Jake explains about another girl that Max tangled w/ and how it ended tragically and that is why he doesn’t like Max. Oh but of course he will trust the things that come out of Max’s mouth? And oddly this other girl sounded identical to Abby only you substitute in Jake for the Max role then. The girl killed herself and yet at one point, after Jake took everything from her, Abby felt she had nothing to live for as well.

This scene was eye rolling: Abby goes topless and burns breasts pretty badly. Jake warns her that they will be sore later. He wants to see the damage by the sun before giving her the cream – apparently he is an expert on whether the stuff will work or not. He makes a snarky comment, she slaps him, Jake manhandles her and doesn’t seem to care that this will hurt her breasts as he jerks up her top to take a gander. I could NOT believe this: he says he is sorry did he cause that to which idiot (Abby) replies, “Don’t be silly it was the sun, wasn’t it?” Then he says why didn’t you tell me what had happened. She DID! How dense is this man? He didn’t remember her being topless and remarking that they may be sore later? I think I have figured out his illness: dementia!!

She realizes she still loves him after all of this! I don’t see it! She not really want to leave Jake either even though he is nastiness personified. She thinks she stands a chance now that he doesn’t have a wife and not once does she wonder about his marriage to Eve and how quickly that had transpired, not an ounce of jealousy in that regard! Unbelievable!

He continues to insult her, but Abby has chosen not to respond as this guy likes to kick ‘em when they are down. Now he realizes that he scraped a nerve and she was surprised by his honesty which implies he lies a lot! He says this “Believe it or not, I love my son, and I wish I could spend more time with him. I didn’t get custody of him just to spite you, you know. I genuinely believed I could give him a better start in life.” She tells him surely he doesn’t expect her to believe that. “Yes-well, maybe I was a little-vindictive.” Is this now the truth? He tells Abby that she made a fool of him and no one does that and gets away w/ it. WAIT a freaking minute!!! How did she make a fool of him? Of course Jake lets Max get away w/ making a fool of him! Another lie I suppose.

THERE is NO forgiveness for what Jake did to her the HEA is so NOT believable! The only way it can be is if she has a lobotomy, but wait . . . she isn’t all that intelligent either!

Great novel but it made me upset, to take a baby just born from it's mother when she is fit is absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't be so forgiving to the hero at all. I would of used all my power to get my child back. The heroine is weak in that way. Overall great read though, I was really in tune with the story.

Tú no eras ninguna tonta, Abby. Sabías exactamente lo que hacías. Eras ambiciosa. Demasiado ambiciosa para rechazarme. Y... sí, supongo que sí me aproveché. ¿Qué hombre no lo hubiera hecho?
*************************************************

This is why Anne Mather stopped being a favourite author. I couldn't stand the skeezy manwhore heroes who couldn't remain faithful to the heroine they supposedly loved for three minutes. At the same time as judging the heroine mistakenly for doing the same.

You can like a story a lot, and still want to STRANGLE one of the main characters. Such is the case with this book. With so many HP novels, you have a h who acts TSTL when she takes the word of the conniving OW and believes the worst of the H, and causes them both a lot of misery in the process. In this case, it's the H who (despite his age and worldly sophistication) is TSTL and believes the conniving OM, causing both the h and himself so much unnecessary heartache.

The h, Abby, an orphan and alone most of her life, eagerly accepts the opportunity to become a top fashion model, and she makes it, with the help of agent/promoter Max, who appears to be a kind, middle aged, strictly business type. However, he later shows his true colors and coerces Abby to sleep with him, threatening to tank her career and see to it she can't get modeling work anywhere else. Her career being all she has, and being only 18 and vulnerable, she gives in and loses her virginity to this sleazy creep, finding the whole experience repulsive. Lucky for Abby, her lack of response made him quickly lose interest and he left her alone physically after that.

Two years later, she meets the H, Jake, at a party and the attraction between them is overwhelming, which surprises and frightens her, as after Max the thought of a man touching her had left her cold. Without giving all the details, she lets Jake know she had a bad experience with a man, but his gentle/passionate lovemaking makes up for the past.

Max resents Jake moving in on what he still considers his territory and starts causing trouble, threatening to tell Jake about their sleeping together unless Abby agrees not to get too serious with Jake and to continue working for him. Because she's afraid to tell Jake the truth about her and Max, thinking he might believe she was one of those models who slept with the boss to further her career, she goes along with what Max says. She had wanted to marry Jake and quit modeling, but instead pretends she wants to keep working and just live together.

Things go from bad to worse, when Abby gets pregnant. She wants more than ever to marry Jake and live with their baby on his island estate (he owns the whole island), but when Max discovers her condition, he implies he already told Jake the truth, making her go running to him to tell her side of the story. After blurting it all out, she discovers Max had set her up: he hadn't told Jake about their affair; instead, he said Abby was going to abort the baby. Now, Jake thinks the very worst of her; that she behaved like a tramp, slept with Max to further her career, only wants him (Jake) for his money and wanted to get rid of the baby because it would interfere with her modeling. He won't listen to what she has to say, and he has her escorted off his island and guarded so she can't have an abortion and when their son is born, he immediately has the baby taken away from her.

As if that's not bad enough, Jake then gets married, to ensure he'll get full custody of baby Dominic, and with his power and connections, as well as his marriage, Abby (despite her status as a top model) didn't stand a chance, and was forced to settle for visitation rights.

Five years later, Abby returns to the island, after Jake has a health scare and spent time in the hospital. He's now divorced and with his sister, Julie, needing to get back to her family and Jake now divorced, Dominic needs his mother. Of course, Julie had an ulterior motive.

The book is all about how Jake and Abby find their way back to each other, after all the pain and heartache, Jake having discovered that in hurting her, he hurt himself just as much, if not more. Max has to pay the price for his actions, though not steep enough for all the damage he did.

One good thing: when Abby recovered from both childbirth and the shock of having the baby taken away from her, she decided to continue modeling, but NOT with Max representing her, because she
kicked his crappy butt to the curb! She was well enough established as a top model by that time to be secure in her career and didn't have to worry that Max could keep her from getting work anymore. She found another agent, Marcia, who was a good person, if a bit of a nag: ( "Watch your weight, Watch those calories, Don't eat this, Don't eat that", etc.). Between that, and all the exhausting work and tiresome travel time, it shows that being a model isn't all the glitter and glamour people tend to think it is.

What really comes across as unbelievable is Jake's willingness to take Max's word for it, and believe Abby would abort their baby. He wasn't some gullible college guy, he was a sophisticated businessman in his 30's; he couldn't see Max for the slime he really was??? Also, he had been sympathetic about Abby's past, knowing she had slept with someone and it was a bad experience and he accepted that, saying she had an injured innocent air about her. Then, he does an about face and won't listen to her side of the story with Max; all of a sudden, she's a conniving tramp. It doesn't make sense, and makes his revelation later on that he always knew deep down that she couldn't be the way Max made her out to be sound phony. WHY THE HELL DIDN'T HE COME TO HIS SENSES SOONER AND SAVED THEM BOTH THOSE UNHAPPY YEARS APART?????

Another thing: there are no details about his marriage, except that her name was Eve, and little Dominic apparently didn't care much for her. They had separated a year before Abby returned to the island, but there were no details of what happened, how Jake felt about her, how they met, why they split up, and especially, why she agreed to marry Jake when she knew it was only to get custody of Dominic? Did he promise her something in return? Was she an ex-girlfriend who still wanted him? There's no info at all.

It's a good, but flawed, story.

La peor trama de la historia, no concibo que a pesar de lo que le hizo el protagonista masculino, ella termine nuevamente con él.
