Snow

Rate this book
David is born of a curse, one that has rendered his father's kingdom helpless to an endless winter. Never seeing his father, raised with the knowledge that his birth killed his mother, David grows up with only his old nurse for company, watching the snow fall, wondering if it will ever end. When his father remarries, David gains a step-brother and sister, beautiful siblings who decide to take the fate of their new father's kingdom into their own hands, sending David to what they think is a quick end. But David escapes and meets up with a man like no one he's ever met, a miner named Alec, whose gruff ways and kind heart warm David up like nothing ever has. He would stay with Alec forever of he could, but things never quite work out as planned in a fairy tale... This retelling of a classic story has it all. Evil family, star-crossed lovers, and beautiful language. Read it and see what happens when the snow ends!

About the author

Wheeler Scott

3 books8 followers
Wheeler Scott was, until recently, a daredevil explorer who visited every continent seeking adventure and romance and who also worked as a chef, stripper, and bus driver. Wheeler now lives on a remote island in the South Pacific and spends most days trying to achieve the perfect tan (except for Tuesdays, when the pool boy comes to visit).

Ok, so maybe that isn't entirely true.

In reality, Wheeler gets a lot of funny looks regarding the first name and can usually be found curled up with a book. Wheeler lives and works in Washington DC and spends way too much time sitting in traffic.

Wow! This story was really…something! Now, where to begin? Ok, here it goes.

I love fairy tales. I spent all my childhood reading fairy tales, collecting fairy tale books and folklore stories from all around the world, anything that I could get my hands on. As a fan of both fairy tales and M/M romance, naturally I pounced on this one. What a great landing!

This is a M/M retelling of the classic fairy tale “Snowwhite”. I think it takes a lot to breath a fresh life into a fairy tale like “Snowwhite”. This story while still a retelling, is so well-written and has such a well-thought, well-planned story-line that it’s almost a whole different story, unique and brilliant. This story is like a hidden treasure or something! Although I have to warn you that this story is written rather similar to classic fairy tales. There is Sex and intimacy but the details are left to your imaginations!XD

The story is quite engrossing and I was immediately hooked, unable to put the book down for even a moment. It's written quite beautifully.
We get to read about the realistic and even dark side of the true love and how hurtful it can really be to love someone so wholeheartedly that your entire existence depends on that person.

“Snow” of our story goes through an amazing character development. He went from a pale shadow to a powerful unique character. He is a very unique “Snow white” indeed. He is both good and evil. He is very human and yet not quite a human. His character is simply memorable and original. His true love was first introduced as a funny, witty and grumpy character that I couldn't help but love. His true character was revealed gradually and the reader gets to peel his skin and see the darkness and sorrow in his heart. We get to see how self-destructive it can be if we fear love and the heart-break that is almost attached to it too much.

So why 4 stars? I am afraid the story was so damn good that raised my expectations too high. It's true that POV sometimes shifted a little too quickly for my taste, especially when new characters were making an appearance and I had to read some parts twice to understand what was happening or whose thoughts I was reading.

The story is quite mystical and there are many mysteries. Some of these mysterious are left unresolved. I could deal with some of it but not all of it. For example, how is it that a particular miner could read? Was he taught by a certain someone or he simply isn’t who he seems to be? If so, who the hell is he?

Still, I could easily put aside these minor flaws. My main problem was something else. The story was very well-paced through most of the book and I simply loved that. Characters had place to grow and emotions had the chance to surface and show their true quality, from Snow’s unique relationship with his nurse to his true love for his savior. But I am sorry to say that as the ending approached, the pace of the story quickened and was even rushed. I was afraid to check out the page numbering since I couldn’t understand why there were so few pages left. I am afraid “Snow” was forced into "Snow white"’s skin in quite a rush and I was left rather unsatisfied with the ending. I was left hanging and wanting a lot more, aching that that story ended in very few pages. You have to understand that the ending was still really good and in accord with the original fairy tale but I was disappointed because "Snow" was a very amazing story. I simply wanted more and I think this book could have had a much better, satisfactory ending. I guess I got too invested in the story. I actually shed a tear or two!

Despite my complains, I still strongly recommend this dark, mystical and beautiful retelling of “Snow white” to all fans of fairy tales. Where fairy tales are concerned, this one is quite amazing.

That was absolutely a mazz-ing! =)

Snow White who makes snow and a Prince who is actually ...not quite a dwarf, not quite a Prince. And that's the only thing that I would love to know - who is he? But the story is beautiful even without us looking at his birth certificate, so I am cool with the mystery :)

Perfect ending. Perfect!

OH wow! This is my favorite m/m fairytale now! It was beautiful and and and and I just loved it :D Watching the character David grow was amazing. During the first part of the book we see him growing up abandoned by his father. His mother died after his birth, and then the snow started. David was blank. He didn't have a personality or presence. Only once his eeeeevil step brother and sister took an interest in him (killing him) did he start to evolve. And then he bloomed like a spring flower after the winter season. Too much? yeah maybe but that's what it felt like :D

David is not perfect. He has killed people. He is the curse that makes the snow which starves the people. His twu wuv Alec isn't perfect either; he doesn't want to be hurt by love & so he pushes David away. Several secondary characters are just as dimensional as David & Alec.

Wheeler Scott's Snow is a m/m reworking of the classic fairytale Snow White. The protagonist David and his bittersweet upbringing by Nurse and budding relationship with Alec are lovingly developed; however, other aspects of the plot line and character development were somewhat disappointing. Stylistically, I understand how Scott was attempting to maintain the integrity of a fairytale mood, however, this mood becomes a little strained in the ending as Scott forces the Snow White storyline into Snow. The well-paced plot deteriorates as it speeds through the introduction of Michael and a new conflict, leaving the reader (and the characters!) in the dust. The novel gets 5-stars for the first 76% of the story (according to my Kindle, that's when the plot falls apart), the last 24% felt particularly amateur though, which was especially disappointing because I thought Scott could have done so much more with the promising characters of Judith and Michael.

I NEED MORE.

No, really. How come the story ends so abruptly? It was so good and at least 20 pages more is needed. That's my only complaint, though. The story is told in a beautiful way. I loved how the relationship between David and Alec evolved, and I was nicely surprised by Judith's character (if only we could see more of her).

The book is not easy to find, but worth the quest. It's a lovely, overlooked gem!

I'm not good at judging books so usually I leave that to others, but this book makes me want to know how to find words to describe the emotions that made me feel. I cried, laughed and strangely it makes me feel affection toward the characters. I also appreciated the choice of non-stereotypical characters.
When a book makes me feel all this deserves five stars!

A darkly beautiful fairy tale, achingly romantic and full of amazing details. Recommended!

I'm not usually very good at explaining why I love certain things (that's why I tend to sit back and let the more articulate people write the reviews), but let me just say that this book is stunning. The fairy tale premise is what draws you in but the moving and realistic depiction of true love as something thorny, turbulent and imperfect is what keeps you there. Every time I reread it my heart gets broken all over again.

4.5 stars.

An absolutely enchanting story! Melancholy, sad, and so lovely it hurt.

Just wish the ending was a bit more elaborate, and the creepy brother and sister's demise wasn't so anticlimactic.

I'm torn on this one because while it wasn't bad (and there were parts that were pretty good), the overall effect is kind of...confusing. It's almost as if it were a real fairy tale from centuries gone and as such, parts of the original had been lost. It makes it confusing at times and rather...inexplicably incongruous, I think. This is one of those stories that, while pretty long, look better in the macro than it does in the micro level.

Fairy tales are retold all the time in the fantasy/romance genres.
This is a particularly good m/m offering based loosely based on Snow White, and maybe Frozen (aka. The Snow Queen). Well written, with complex characters, and a fairly unpredictable plot - considering it's based on well known stories.
I only wish the epilogue was longer.

When a story makes me sob this much, it automatically deserves a five star rating. No questions asked.

It's a shame Wheeler Scott isn't a Goodreads author, because I have a million questions I'd love to ask. Don't get me wrong, I think her plot choices are brilliant and I wouldn't change a single word of text, it's just that the story left me feeling somewhat shaken and I'd really like some further insight into this overwhelming, heartbreaking thing I just read! I suppose an inability to let go is a good sign, though. It means I was fully absorbed into this world.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD:

I don't take issue with the cheating, mainly because it proves to be a necessary plot twist that sets some important events into motion. It also sheds light onto the character of Alec in an intriguing way: he's self loathing and self destructive, above all else. I think that's the moment when it becomes clear that this character can't possibly have a happy ending. He's a tragic figure. So while I'm not usually a fan of cheating, it didn't ruin the romantic aspect for me. If anything it made me even more invested; I've read far too many romances with bland, uninteresting lead characters. Scott's leading men are both vibrant, full of flaws and easy to love. I don't remember the last time I wanted two characters to find happiness so badly!

However, I would love to ask the author about one of the book's later reveals: Alec's past with the prince. It felt tacked on to me, unnecessary. I didn't think it added anything of value to the plot, which is something I'd love to discuss further. To be honest, I'd love to set up a separate discussion group just to analyze the last fifty or so pages! Does anyone else feel that way? (I'm dying to know if Scott ever considered writing a different ending, even if only during the planning stages. I think the existing ending is amazing, I just can't stop thinking "what if?" in relation to it!)

If all m/m romances were this engrossing and beautifully written, I wouldn't bother reading any other genre.

A version of the classic Snow White story.

The first chapters are very slow-paced and I almost stopped reading a couple of times. The ending is too quick, and what happens on the last 2 pages could have easily filled another chapter. It just ends, with some bigger plotpoints only mentioned in a sentence or two. That left me a bit unsatisfied, as if someone had cut away the last 5 minutes of the movie.
I liked the plot itself though, it has a lot of fairytale-feeling to it and a lot of charme, the typical elements of Snow White are clever woven into the story and the writing is easy to follow.

I liked the characters well, but I could not really understand the attraction between David and Alec. Somehow I just coldn't picture them together, with how the characters were introduced. But maybe that's just me.

The biggest problem I had was Michael. I didn't like how he gets just thrown into the plot at some point and how he changes the entire direction of the story.

Overall I liked this book, it was a sweet fairytale for a grey and rainy day, but a bit more editing at the beginning and a bit fleshing out at the end would have made it a lot better.
