Teenager Mary Barrone risks permanently losing her real life to travel back in time to the 1890s, when her family's rundown mansion was inhabited by a famous playwright and his beautiful wife, who adopt her as their niece.
I often think about these one off titles that I read as a teenager and decided last month to hunt down a few of the out of prints books I remembered fondly.
This is one I remember borrowing from the library more than once but never finishing because I found it too spooky. As an adult reader, I can’t say it’s spooky, but it is a little odd. The mystery of the past is interesting, but I never felt a connection with the main character and we never knew if her presence in the past was history or entirely a 20th century creation – which affects the historical plot. The entire dream spinning concept was odd, with Mary deciding whether or not to dream when she fell asleep– that’s not how the brain works. All in all, not a bad read, but not terribly memorable or necessary to reread.
It was interesting and different. The whole "traveling to the past in a dream" concept was fascinating. At the beginning of the book, I probably would have given it 4 stars. But certain aspects of the end brought it to a "2". So, I'm compromising and giving it 3 stars, lol.
