Rate this book

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

This is Bel Ami aka Dear Friend, in Russian translation, which was the only one I had readily available when I was in between books :) . I read it before, but couldn’t remember details or much of the plot, frankly. What can I say? Not much… Young, ambitious, and dirt poor, George weaves his net, like a spider, around Paris, catching in it influential women and using them as stepping stones in enhancing his career and social status. When I read it in high school, I thought it was sexy, but now it felt kinda sad, for the most part.
