In spite of being divided into chapters, The Adventures of Benny is really just a collection of (mostly) unrelated stories about a boy named Benny and his... well, adventures. The book reads really young, and though I don't have a problem with reading children's books in general, this one probably isn't going to appeal to most adults. Kids (especially boys) would probably love it, though.

"Chapter 1: Bigfoot or The Value of a Smelly Friend" - This first story had sort of a fairy-tale feel to it, with a crafty wolf and the threat of being boiled up in a stew for dinner.

"Chapter 2: The Mummy or Another Great Use for Toilet Paper" - Okay, I'll admit, I kind of laughed at King Butthankhamen (aka King Butt). It was a pretty silly story, but kind of entertaining.

"Chapter 3: Pirates or The Truth About Life on the High Seas" - This is probably the weakest story. Aside from the cute pirate names, there wasn't a lot of plot.

"Chapter 4: The Booger-Man or A Good Argument for Not Picking Your Nose" - This one was obviously written out of frustration over living with a booger-wiping kid, but it's still kind of amusing. Especially the part about the dog.

"Chapter 5: Monkey Island or The Advantage of Opposable Thumbs" - This story I also thought was a bit weak, and not quite as funny as some of the others. It sort of ties into something that happened in the first story, but it stands on its own, as well.

All in all, it was just an okay collection of stories. There are some good one-liners that made me laugh, and the illustrations are really cute (they're probably the best part of the whole book). I don't think I'd recommend this one to adults the way I might recommend some other children's books, but for kids themselves, it's solid and fairly well written.

Quotable moment:

Benny looked over at Bigfoot.

"You don't have a nose," said Benny. "How do you smell?"

"Terrible," replied Bigfoot.

"I see," said Benny. "Well, that's a relief. I thought the baloney sandwich had gone bad."

Honestly, I LOVE the look of this book. All black and white, with just the word BENNY in bright green on the cover. Nice, thick paper and lots of white (or black) space around a font that works well for the words and illustrations in the book. The illustrations are GREAT. It's the stories that are lacking for me. Worse than Captain Underpants. Disappointing from such an otherwise attractive book...I would love to see Mr. Shreve pair up with another author so his illustrations can be best complimented!

The first chapter of this book is called, "Bigfoot or The Value of a Smelly Friend." A line from that chapter goes,

"'Hi, I'm Bigfoot,' said Bigfoot, clutching hit butt."

Filled with potty humor and delightfully expressive illustrations, this book screams "boy," "reluctant reader," and "captain underpants." Do not pick this up if you are not ready for uncountable butt and poop jokes.

Not my cup of tea, but it will be a great book for boy readers. Expect to lots of bathroom humor and underwear jokes! It is a harmless graphic novel style book that will keep boys laughing and may even inspire them to write some of their own make-believe adventures.

Perfect for Dads and his boys.

Great book. Great stories. Perfect for dad. Boogers and such humor. I read to my 3 and 5 year old. We all enjoyed the stories. All dumb humor that the boys of the house enjoy.

Review by Brandon (6): my favorite part of the story was the end, when Benny got his new fishing pole.

Of all the stories, my son's favorite one was Bigfoot and mine was the Mummy.

What a fun book! I read this outloud to my kids, 5 and 7, and they both loved it! Each chapter is a story all in itself and contains plenty of what I like to call "boy humor" although my girl loved it too! In fact she got so tickled over Benny grabbing some toilet paper off the tp-wrapped mummy and taking it to the bathroom with him that she talked about it for days after. They also like the wedgie--over the head style--that the mummy gave Benny and his uncle. I am going to use at least one if not two of these stories in my storytimes for older kids this summer. We are sooo hoping for more adventures from Benny!

Potty humor ... it had her laughing and forever coming in to tell us the "joke." Our daughter must have read this book cover to cover at least 5 times this summer. She is the one who showed us that the story came full circle with the fishing poles!

Reminiscent of Super Diaper Baby, this one will appeal to the second or third grader in all of us. Complete with the boogerman, "butt" humor, and toilet paper, I think I now know where I will quietly place Benny in my home: the bathroom. My boys will undoubtedly giggle away their time in the "reading room."

Perfect pick for boys who like underwear and fart jokes. Really, I think underpants are mentioned on every page. It's cute and a great recommendation for Captain Underpants fans.

A perfect boy book. Written in vignettes so it can be read in chunks if necessary and it's silly and gross and funny.

My son loved this book! Perfect for a boy who really isn't into reading fiction. The silliness was right up his alley!!
