I borrowed this book from a public library. It’s described as a ‘self-help’ book & has been categorised as ‘psychology’ by Goodreads…really?? I gather the author doesn’t have a psychology degree (or remotely similar) but bases her views and ‘education’ on personal anecdotes, what she’s learnt from tik-tok, and a variety of podcasts and short courses (which she doesn’t cite in a bibliography or even brief footnotes). As a former teacher & school leader with a major in Health Education, I won’t be recommending this book to the 16 and 17 year olds I’ll be mentoring soon - there are much better resources around by qualified professionals. This book is also way too long…whether readers are busy with their formal education…or not. The editing needed to be a
lot tighter. Of course the author’s friends might disagree with me as notice there are quite a few favourable reviews. I am glad I got towards the end…there are a few helpful ‘life perspective questions’P197 - so 2 stars for that + Livi Redden does have potential (& she has an abundance of confidence!), but I can’t imagine her going far without learning from more reputable sites - preferably after a university education if she wants to continue to write in the ‘psychology’ space.

I bought this book after listening to a talk of Livi Redden on Youtube. The book resonated with a lot of my beliefs, which is why I liked it. It is nice to be reminded by another person that you do not have to follow the social rules that society decided for you. You are a beautiful person exactly as you are and you can make choices based on who you want to be, not who society wants you to be.

So, why 4 stars and not 5? I noticed that many tips also include the involvement of other people. These tips were written from an extroverted heart. They did not resonate with the introverted one I have. But overall the book was nice to read and led to many small smiles of recognition while reading.
