About the author

John Louis Romer attended Ottershaw School, the Wimbledon School of Art (1958-1963), and the Royal College of Art (A.R.C.A., 1966) in London. Following this, he traveled and studied in the Near East and married his wife Yvonne Elizabeth de Coetlogan Aylwin (Beth), an artist and writer. After a brief stint teaching the history of art and architecture at art colleges in England and Wales (1968-1972), he worked as an epigraphic artist with the British Institute in Iran at Persepolis and Pasargadae in 1972. He worked as an artist in epigraphic studies — with the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, 1972-1973, and with the Oriental Institute Epigraphic Survey, 1973-1977 — in the temples and tombs of Thebes. In 1977-1979, he became the Field Director of The Brooklyn Museum’s Theban Expedition, originating and organizing an excavation of the tomb of Ramesses XI in the Valley of the Kings. In 1992, at the request of the Egyptian Organization of Antiquities, he convened a multinational committee to advise and recommend projects and procedures for the conservation of the Valley of the Kings. He is a member of the International Association of Egyptologists and the Egypt Exploration Society. He has been the President of the Theban Foundation since 1979. He has written several acclaimed books and produced some excellent documentaries. His primary interests are in the preservation of antiquities, and in making the past meaningful to present-day people. When he is not busy writing books, making documentaries, or pushing for conservation in the Valley of the Kings, he and his wife live in Aiola, Tuscany, Italy.

Uz šīs grāmatas izlasīšanu mani pamudināja divi notikumi. Pirmais – nesen biju apmeklējis Ēģipti un slavenās piramīdas, piepildīju bērnības sapni apskatīt 4500 gadus vecas celtnes, par kurām daudz lasīts dažādos vēsturiskos romānos un daiļdarbos. Otrais krievu pseido dokumentālās filmas „Тайна египетских пирамид” noskatīšanās un ar to saistīto diskusiju lasīšana internetā. Skaidri bija nošķirami divi viedokļi – racionāli domājoši cilvēki un „piramidologi” (tie kas tic visam citam, tikai ne tam, ka piramīdas cēluši paši ēģiptieši).

Grāmatas atrašana nebija viegls uzdevums, tam tika veltītas vairākas stundas, nu nekādi nevēlējos iepirkt kaut kādu Muldašova tipa pseidozinātnisku apcerējumu veltītu piramidoloģijai. Mana galvenā vēlme bija uzzināt, kā tieši piramīdas ir tikušas būvētas, procesa apraksts, fakti, kas liecina par labu kādai konkrētai teorijai, fakti, kas ir pretrunā ar teoriju.

Pati grāmata, atzīšu uzreiz, pārspēja visas manas ekspektācijas. Grāmatas centrālā lieta, kas tiek apskatīta, ir Heopsa piramīda – turpmāk Piramīda. Perfekts, strukturizēts izklāsts, kas sevī ietver ne tikai parastai tautai „vispārzināmo” informāciju, bet arī dod ieskatu tādās niansēs, kas saistītas ar piramīdu būvniecību, kas parastam nespeciālistam nemaz nav zināmas. Grāmata nav domāta atlantologiem, ufologiem un piramidologiem, par viņiem autors izsaka savu viedokli citēdams W.M.F.Petrie:

„… dialogue in this democracy of ignorance where fact and theory, inaccuracy and inclination are given equal weigth, is Sisyphean. … It is useless to state the real truth of the matter, it has no effect on those who are subject to this type of hallucination. They can but be left with the flat earth believers and other such people.”

Pirmajā daļā autors diezgan smalki pastāsta, kā ir radušies mīti par piramīdām un „piramidoloģijas” pirmsākumi, agrīnie izrakumi un zinātnieku secinājumi.

Otrajā daļā lasītājam tiek pastāstīts viss, kas ir zināms par tā laika ēģiptiešu iedzīvotājiem, viņu iespējamā sadzīve, celtniecības motivācija, organizācija. Izteikumi netiek grābti no gaisa, bet pamatoti ar nopietnām atsaucēm uz arheologu publikācijām.

Trešajā daļā tiek apskatītas Piramīdas būvniecības materiālu ieguves vietas, akmens apstrādes tehnoloģijas, loģistikas tīkls.

Ceturtā daļa tiek veltītā agrīno piramīdu būvniecībai, materiāliem un metodēm, galvenais uzskats likts uz Džosera piramīdu un Sneferu trijām piramīdām (jā, šis faraons savas dzīves laikā sev pamanījās uzbūvēt veselas trīs piramīdas.

Piektā daļa sevī ietver aprakstu kā Piramīdas būvniecība uzsākta, plānošana, būvlaukuma sagatavošana, iekšējais un ārējais plānojums.

Sestā un pēdējā daļa apraksta Piramīdas būvniecības praktiskos aspektus, kā nodrošināt struktūras integritāti, veikt precīzus mērījumus, katra piramīdas elementa nepieciešamība un galvenais, kas ir ticis salaists dēlī un kā tas pēc tam labots. Beigās ir daudz un dažādi pielikumi ar darba plāniem, piramīdu plānojumiem, dimensijām un darbu apjomiem.

Es personīgi grāmatā uzzināju daudzas jaunas lietas, gan to ka Piramīdai eksistē plāns 1:1, kas izkalts piramīdas piekājē uz klinšu plato, balstoties uz kuru tad arī veiktas visi nepieciešamie mērījumi, akmens apstrādes metodes, Piramīdas būvniecības kļūdas un teorija, kādēļ ir bijušas nepieciešamas šahtas, kuras bloķētas ar bronzas rokturiem.

Lasāmviela nav no tām vieglākajām, reizēm ir jāpašķir atpakaļ, lai apskatītos kādu shēmu, reizēm sevi pieķer piecas minūtes pētot kādu fotogrāfiju, arī pats formāts ir akadēmiski monumentāls. Grāmata ir lasīšanai neparocīgs krītpapīra veidojums, kas sver vairāk kā divus kilogramus. Toties, kad esi ticis cauri, iegūtais zināšanu apjoms ir vienkārši milzīgs. Protams, paliek atvērti jautājumi uz kuriem iespējams nekad neuzzināsim atbildes, bet galvenais, „Kā Piramīda tika uzbūvēta?” ir atbildēts. Grāmatai lieku 10 no 10 ballēm. Tiešām ieteiktu izlasīt katram, kuru interesē šī lieta, un kuru interesē ne tikai „aizraujoši pseidozinātniski izdomājumi”, bet arī fakti.

Viel gründlicher und umfassender kann man über die Khufu-Pyramide nicht schreiben (okay, in den letzten zehn Jahren könnte es kleinere neue Entdeckungen auf dem Plateau von Gizeh gegeben haben). Romer ist ungeheuer vorsichtig, was Verallgemeinerungen angeht und trennt mit großer Präzision gesicherte Fakten und Vermutungen. Obendrein ist er herrlich cranky und sehr gut lesbar.

This is a great overview of not only the Great Pyramid, but all that surrounds it upon the Giza plateau (up to a point of course, since it is a dated reference). There is a lot I didn't know and due to Romer's common referencing of Petrie's accomplishments there. I look forward to dipping into more of Petrie's work.

John Romer is an excellent author on Egyptian history, and this large and impressive book about the Great Pyramid is well worth the time of anyone interested in the subject. Although I thought it was organized a little oddly, he covers a variety of topics surrounding the genesis, design, and construction of this amazing structure with great skill and a clear style. There's a great deal that was new to me here, including the fact that the pyramid's designers actually tried out the layout of some of the interior corridors elsewhere on the Giza plateau. Pyramidiots who think space aliens built the Great Pyramid should especially read this. While there are still mysteries surrounding this amazing creation, there's no doubt who built it and did so with such wonderful skill.

One of those books that boasts "never before seen" and turns out to be a minor riff on existing theories and basically bizarre or razor thin threads of newness. Nevertheless, I learned a lot and was filled with a thirst to know more about the pyramids, at least for a while until I started thinking about other things.
