I wish I could say that I liked this book, but I didn't. I found the stories very difficult to read and pretty pointless. They were all about things that happen in a family, but I did not find the family relatable at all. The wife was written in a super weird way and all of the characters felt very one dimensional. The stories are all centered around the family and are character driven and they fell flat because of the lack of dimension and character development. There was one story that I liked about baking a cake that felt more developed than any other story in the book, unfortunately the rest of the stories were not up to that same level.
I read this (I believe the copy I read was titled "The Family Guareschi") thirty something years ago as a big fan of the author's Don Camillo stories, and my memory of it has prompted me to try to find another copy, though it remains somewhat elusive. The vignettes from his family life were intermittently hilarious, especially the birthday cake. If you have a chance to read it, and amusing short autobiographical stories are your thing, then it's well worthwhile.
Old-fashioned sexist yet thoroughly amusing vignettes from the life of a family of four in post-WWII Italy, mostly told from the viewpoint of the long-suffering, out-witted husband.
This is one my bf's favorite books. Short stories revolving around family life in Italy. Most of them were funny. Near the end though the book dragged. As a whole I enjoyed reading though.
