"This is an essential primer of Ericksonian hypnotherapy and strategic psychotherapy. […] O’Hanlon provides threads that crystallize practical patterns useful to clinicians at all levels of expertise." — Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D., Director, The Milton H. Erickson Foundation
This is a Terrific book because, Dr. O' Hanlon shows you how Dr. Erickson helped people strategically--Many times without Hypnosis He was able to get people to make minor changes, that later would lead to major changes. Dr. Erickson helped his patients reframe the way they looked at challenges. The former Police Officer who had high blood pressure, was overweight, and drank too much. Dr. Erickson said eat all you want, and drink all you want, but you have to walk to a store that is a mile away for each drink, and you can smoke all the cigarettes and eat all the food that you want. The stipulation was that he would have to walk to another Supermarket/Store another mile out of the way. The Police Officer was furious since he was a person used to following orders. He stubbornly followed Dr. Erickson's Advice I believe 6 months later a man stopped by Dr. Erickson's place, whom he could barely recognize. The man was the Police Officer who had lost significant weight, and had Greatly reduced his Blood Pressure, and now enjoyed walking.
There are many more short vignettes like this in the book. He also masterfully shows how Dr. Erickson is able to change patterns using: Pacing, Linking, Truisms, Negation, altered tempo, confusion, Metaphors, The Yes-Set, and much much more.....
Make a small change here.....and then alter that over there.., and you can feel yourself searching for that pearl of wisdom ... and it's not that difficult to see.....Be your own Natural Self....don't try to imitate Dr. Erickson verbatim... "My Grandfather used to hide the Chicken feed from the Chickens".... "It made the Chickens strong and healthy looking for it, once they found it they would puff out their chests"..."It kept them fit and strong"
Excellent book for professionals, which I'm not. Even so, it was a great read. If you're a professional, you will LOVE this. Gets real down and dirty into the nuts and bolts of therapy.
