It's awesome how something so short can be so fascinating, I got really involved by the idea and by the interaction of the characters, even though it was brief.
A collection of short stories about memory and time. While on a sentimental trip to heal from a broken heart, the protagonist meets a girl on a ferry. Her name is Emanon. She is an amazing person who remembers everything from the beginning of life on Earth.
Emanon seems like an ordinary girl, but behind her lies thousands of years of human history. The stories she tells are told through the perspectives of ancient people and cultures, as well as the characters she encounters from different eras. Each episode brings pieces of history alive through Emanon's memories. What is particularly impressive is the unique setting in which she passes her memories on to her daughter. This allows Emanon to retain knowledge that transcends generations while surrendering to the flow of time.
Each episode depicts the impact of her encounter with Emanon on the protagonist and the people around them. The weight of Emanon's memories gives people she meets new perspectives and changes their lives. This is a consistent theme throughout the story.
Emanon's words are sometimes philosophical and sometimes heartbreaking. The events of her past come through as living memories filled with emotions and thoughts, not just a list of history.
After finishing the book, what stuck with me was Emanon's smile and the many memories she recounts. It reminds me that human memories not only provide insight into the past, but also foster hopes and dreams for the future.
Omoide Emanon is easily one of my favorite short manga of all time. The art is beautiful, the concept and its execution are fascinating, and the story resonated with me long after I finished reading. While I wouldn't recommend it to everyone I know, I strongly believe it deserves to be read by more people!
Imagine being a young adult and having the memories of your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and so forth back to the beginning of life itself. 3 billions years. Kept in one single mind. What would your role be, your reason for existence, would you tire of it?
