Brandon Dumont is not the man he was. Embittered by war, he's now a rugged survivor, a broken hero. Certain he's not fit for society, he finds his lonely self-imposed exile shattered by the arrival of the woman he once bedded and left behind.
Since her fiancé went to war, social butterfly Caroline Benet has had to grow up fast. She's held up a stagecoach at gunpoint and left the safety of Charleston for wild Texas territory - all to find a man she no longer knows... for the sake of their unborn child...

The title of this book, "Texas Wedding for Their Baby's Sake", really detracts from the involving story line and the interesting characters. Kathryn Albright is a wonderful romantic storyteller, and the setting and era of 1830's Texas and South Carolina add just the right elements for this tale of a wounded hero and his awesome heroine. Brandon Dumont is a successful surgeon and society member of Charleston, SC. He has won the heart of the beautiful Caroline Benet, to whom he becomes secretly engaged, and they share a night of loving passion. The arrival of Brandon's brother, Jake, sets in motion a course of events which causes Brandon to leave Charleston and Caroline behind. He heads to Texas with Caroline's brother Tom, never suspecting the horrors which he will soon face. Caroline is left with a broken heart, and soon discovers that she is expecting Brandon's child. Her parents expect her to either marry quickly or give up her child. Since Caroline wants to keep her baby, and the only man she wants is Brandon, she sets out to find her lost love. When the two are finally reunited, both are greatly changed. Caroline has found strengths in herself that she never expected, and she is no longer just a "society miss". Brandon has become bitter and remote, the effects of war and doctoring the wounded, and then his own harsh imprisonment, have all taken a serious toll. He is not happy to see Caroline, and even more stunned when he learns he is to be a father. He has never stopped loving her, but he sees himself unfit to love any woman, and he feels he can no longer practice medicine. Once Caroline realizes that Brandon does not wish to return with her to Charleston, she determines to find a way to reach him and make him see how much she loves him. The passion between them is undeniable, but so is the anger and uncertainty. I love wounded heroes, but what really made this story special is the greatness of Caroline's character. She is much more than her beauty and her societal standing--she is a real woman who sees the flaws in her man, and loves him all the more. She forgives him, stands by him, admonishes him, and lifts him up to stand at her side. He is worthy, so worthy, and she redeems him and makes him whole. A very good romance read with a terrible title, "Texas Wedding for Their Baby's Sake" is highly recommended!
Mmm.. what can I say about this book ya? Bought it merely because of the cover. Do you think it's Paul? :D But then again, I also happen to like this kind of theme also. You know, the woman got pregnant and the father of the baby didn't know it yet and she's having trouble on how to tell him since they're not, or at least he's not, expecting this.
I read quiet enough where the hero suffered from war, whether mentally only or both, along with physically. Brandon suffered both, and he's surely got this PTSD (Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder) because of it. I was quiet familiar with his feeling not capable or worth enough. And I just can't blame him if he never let anyone get closer, nor to tell anyone, not even his brother, about his problem because he couldn't stand the pity look. The way he pushed Caroline away and made her disappointed over and over made me want to smack him. Hmpfh! Poor Caroline! But maybe since he's a doctor, he realized the consequences. And it's not a promising future.
Just like most of romance novels, we know that at the end he will come around, although I didn't expect his condition improved that easily. And I thought he'd come to his sense right after the climax scene that was quiet predictable. But it turned out a bit different. A bit. :D

Brandon takes off to Texas to fight in the war leaving behind his fiance, although an official announcement has not been made. Unknown to him, Caroline is pregnant from their one night of love.
Being a prisoner of war changes him and he no longer feels able to get married. He writes home that he doesn't plan on returning. Caroline travels to Texas to try and change his mind. She needs him and doesn't know how to tell him he will be a father in a few months time.
Brandon and Caroline definitely have a lot of issues and both grow up considerably during their journeys.
The period of Texas independence is a period I've not often encountered in romance fiction, so reading this book brought me a picture of the history beyond the textbooks. Plus, this book doesn't concentrate on the wars but on those brave enough and strong enough to put down roots in a wild and often uncompromising land while dealing with the aftermath of a bloody war. The hero Brandon is a wounded doctor dealing with PTSD. The society woman from "back East" who loves him, Caroline, must prove to him she has the guts and grit to survive in this place he's chosen to put down roots. Interesting characters and a good story.
Caroline had nothing to lose in her journey to Texas to find her fiance Brandon. He'd written to tell her he'd not be coming back, but he didn't know about the coming baby. But Brandon is not the man who had left her, he's now bitter and scarred deeply by war. The love they once shared only deepens his resolve to push her away at all costs. This is my first from Ms. Albright and I found it to be a lovely heartwarming romance. I must see if Brandon's brother Jake has his own story.
Kathyrn Albright's first two books, THE ANGEL AND THE OUTLAW, and THE REBEL AND THE LADY, were both outstanding, wonderful stories that were well written. This one, I had a hard time with. I'm not sure what happened but it wasn't her usual work. I felt there was too much telling, and not enough showing, with very little action, though there were a couple of really good scenes. Having loved her first two books, and knowing how well she can write, I'll be picking up her next book.
