The Beatles themselves chortled and dismissed this book as academic pretension, but I profited from reading this. Normally one is exposed to music theory after years of piano lessons and hours of practicing Bach, Chopin & Co. So the examples used to illustrate points of theory make sense to students. This was not my path, thus to be introduced to concepts like pentatonic scales, dominant 9ths, and melisma based on music I did know well was useful.

Che senso ha fare un'analisi musicale teorica delle canzoni dei Beatles, che notoriamente non avevano alcuna cultura musicale e suonavano ad orecchio? Beh, un senso ce l'ha. Come il musicologo Wilfrid Mellers spiegò in questo vecchio libro la teoria musicale nasce per codificare cosa si suona. Da un punto di vista armonico la musica pop, come del resto il blues e il rock, è sicuramente meno complessa della musica classica diciamo dal 1700 al 1900; ma questo non significa che le note siano affastellate a caso. Le "cadenze eolie" narrate dal critico musicale del Times riguardo a Not a second time sono per Mellers semplicemente il risultato di una sperimentazione del quartetto che ha parecchie affinità con la musica rinascimentale per l'ottima ragione che anche a quel tempo, con il passaggio dalla modalità alla tonalità, si viaggiava a vista... pardon, a udito.
La prosa è piuttosto pesante, anche senza considerare il gergo tecnico (al termine del libro c'è un glossario, ma non fa certo le veci di un testo di teoria musicale): sicuramente il libro non è adatto al tipico fan che non avrebbe i mezzi per seguire l'esposizione, ma richiede appunto un buon background. Rispetto a quando lo lessi per la prima volta trent'anni fa, l'ho poi trovato meno interessante: non so se la ragione sia perché oggi di Beatles ne so molto di più di allora o perché in effetti i temi musicali sono solo accennati. Un'ultima curiosità: i quarant'anni del libro si notano nell'uso della parola "Negroid" in riferimento alla musica nera, che evidentemente allora non era un tabù come oggi.

read this some years ago, it is a very technical analysis of the Beatles music from a prefessor of music. A lot of talk about tonalities etc. Nevertheless i enjoyed it, as most Beatlers will/do.
