I've read more than my fair share of fairy tale books growing up-- this is by far one of the most memorable and least painful of the lot. Many fairy tales subsist on raw unjust brutality and some sort of misguided comeuppance bullcrap-- while this is present in a few of these tales, I'd say over half are much less flimsy.
Billy Beg and the Bull, The Boy Who Killed the Dif, The Giant Who Had No Heart in His Body, and more are some of the most inventive and downright odd tales I've ever encountered, and it's for the better.
This anthology also includes a Chinese folk tale, "Pies of a Princess," which was a much-appreciated break from the random giant killing.
As far as fairy tales go, you don't get much better than this collection, especially for the time period (1943) in which it was printed.
