Up-to-date take on the War Between the States in which the author highlights the importance of the slavery issue but also discusses other aspects such as the everyday suffering of the American people in the war-torn states. Instead of just ending his narrative with the end of the war itself, Hochgeschwender thankfully draws a connection between unresolved racial issues after the war and their (often ignored) role in the formulation of a common national historic memory in the US.
