With such beginnings, a process of formation still in progress at the period we are considering, one could only expect to find a population completely destitute of any moral nexus. Races and individuals are badly amalgamated; they do not blend into any coherent whole; they are juxtaposed, forming separate groups and units that merely coexist. The strongest ties that bind them into some kind of social whole are the most primitive and rudimentary human links, stemming directly and immediately from the relationship established in labor and production, particularly the subjection of the slave or semi-slave to his master.Mr. Prado described meticulously the centuries-long extractionary practices directed by the Portuguese Crown, with the Catholic Church always hovering nearby as a meaningful, and yet unpunished, enabler. Surely Portugal must have flowered and then blossomed extravagantly at the receipt of such free and abundant natural wealth for so long, conveying a rich legacy to its future generations? Ah, no. Portugal has been one of the poorest countries in Western Europe for quite a while along several dimensions, having ineptly squandered its inheritance mostly upon first receipt. Why then? For what reason did the Indians and slaves in Brazil suffer so woefully for hundreds of years, millions of them? The pursuit of easy plunder was the immediate justification. “Just because” appears to be the answer in retrospect. That seems to be a common theme across time and place, repression existing as a necessary part of the ruling system. Then, too, there are degrees of repression as a curious observer may note in most any society.
