What's to say? I write a lot. I read often. I sleep little. Once in awhile, I've been known to clean the house. A number of kids live in my house and there's this guy they call dad and I call husband. All in all, it's a pretty good life. :-)
I’m not sure if it’s because this is a 9 year old book at the beginning of the author’s publishing career, or does she really do this kind of slur shaming throughout her other books, and I just missed it?
I need to give serious thought into whether I want to continue with her works or not.
“As if she could read his mind, Elizabeth said, “I am tired of watching women dress inappropriately at work. From this moment on, the women in the room should dress modestly. Men are visual by nature, so it is the woman’s responsibility to dress in such a way that will not draw the wrong kind of attention to her.”
No miss Nordin, it fucking certainly is NOT the women’s responsibility to dress in a way that helps MEN control their penis and using said appendage for doing the thinking. ONLY men are accountable or their thoughts and feelings just like any woman would be. THIS is classic example of rape culture and victim blaming. This is heading towards asking a rape victim “what were you wearing”!

This is just what I was looking for, a sweet Romance. This story is a modern-day forced arranged marriage. It is completely implausible, but I loved it.
Ryan is 30, and Beth is 27. The two people they were previously in serious relationships with left them for each other. Now both of them has been single for a while with no potential mate in sight. They dislike each other due to some history in high school and college, but their parents decide they are perfect for each other. If they want to keep their jobs, they must marry and go to a remote cabin in Alaska for 4 months. They are both virgins; and if they do not consummate marriage, they can get an annulment and keep their jobs.
They both grow as people during their time in Alaska, and the ending worked out even better than I expected.
Oh gosh, people actually liked this book? The story is like a chick flick - actually really close to movies like the Proposal. But it drove me crazy in that it lacked description. The book was constantly "he said," "she said." The ending caused me particular pain - it was just bad and finishing it, I felt like I had wasted a few hours of my life. Overall, I would strongly suggest you read something else - there are way better books out there.
With This Ring, I Thee Dread is a fun contemporary romance. Ryan Jackson is a successful advertising executive at his father’s company. His life is great, if you discount he airheaded bimbos his friends Zac and Benset him up with for dates. That is, until his parents arrange a marriage for him – with his arch nemesis Elizabeth Valentine.
Elizabeth spent her school years teased and tormented by Zac, Ben & Ryan. Now a grown woman, her past has led her to be harsh and guarded, especially when it comes to men. So, when her parents announce that she’ll be marrying – and “enjoying” an isolated four month honeymoon with Ryan, her temper flares.
Forced to marry or lose their jobs and inheritance, Elizabeth and Ryan are stuck together in a cabin in the Alaskan Wilderness. What promises to be a miserable time, slowly softens into something more enjoyable as the weeks pass. The pair learn that their shared past isn’t what they thought it was, and learn to see one another in a different light.
At a glance, Elizabeth sometimes seems to be a harsh woman, but if you put yourself in her shoes and imagine that you’ve been forced to marry one of your tormenters from high school, would any woman be different? If anything, she is more forgiving than I would be.
Like Ruth Anne Nordin’s other books, this was a fast, smooth and enjoyable read. Ms. Nordin does an excellent job of executing humor in just the right places. Some of the funniest moments are the “man bashing” talk show that Ryan watches. She also adds suspense when a pair of bank robbers, on the run form the law, stumble into Elizabeth and Ryan’s neck of the woods.
If you’re looking for a fun, entertaining and romantic read, then this is the book for you!
Ryan Jackson and Elizabeth Valentine have been arch-enemies since high school. Both Ryan’s and Elizabeth’s parents agree that it is time these two grow up. That is why their parents propose an ultimatum…either get married to each other or be disowned. Their parents believe they are meant for each other.
Ryan and Elizabeth agree to get married. Besides their parents said that they only have to stay married for four months and after that time, they can get an annulment. There is a catch. Elizabeth and Ryan will spend the next four months in a secluded cabin, out in the middle of Alaska, miles from anyone. Ryan and Elizabeth figure how hard can living with each other as husband and wife be? Besides it is only for four months.
I have read several Ruth Ann Nordin novels now. While I do enjoy them, I do have to say that With This Ring, I Thee Dread is by far my second favorite book, after An Unlikely Place for Love. This story is categorized as a romantic comedy and I totally agree. I couldn’t stop laughing. One of the funniest moments had to have been when Ryan and Elizabeth were trying to one up each other by who could gross the other one out the most. For example Ryan knew Elizabeth hated men with mustaches, so he started growing one; where in turn Elizabeth didn’t shave her legs. I did think Ryan was a sweetheart. He tried to learn what women want and even read some of Elizabeth’s romance novels. Of course through he really only read them for the sex scenes. Last but not least, if you are looking for a romantic comedy then you have to pick up a copy of this book today.
I usually find Nordin's books to be a nice interlude but this story was awful. Constant bickering, childish antics and a heroine who's so anal retentive it made me cringe. Hopefully this is a one off for Ms. Nordin.
With This Ring, I Thee Dread by Ruth Ann Nordin Omaha Series Book 1 Ryan Jackson was going to be Vice President in his dad's advertising firm. He enjoyed his work and felt he was good at it. His friends from school worked their as well, Zack and Ben. He knew his life was changing from theirs, he was growing up and they were still acting like children. Whenever Ryan had to go somewhere with a date he'd have Zack set him up and then he'd end up with yet another empty headed bimbo who wanted to talk about herself. The girl he loved years ago, Carmen, was a model but she could carry on a conversation. His parents would like to see him take Elizabeth Valentine out since they were best friends with her parents but there was no way. They had been enemies since she moved to Omaha her freshman year.
Elizabeth Valentine finished college and was now working for her dad's design company. She was the occupational psychologist. She had to give a talk on sexual harassment at the Jackson's company and couldn't believe her childhood nemesis's, Zack and Ben, were no different. Still immature and Ryan was no different either. After her break-up with Preston, who left her for someone else, she had turned serious and dated very little. It was all work and no play.
Their parents decided that Ryan and Beth, who are both only children, would marry each other so they could have grandchildren to hand down the company's to, they refused. When they were given the choice of marrying or losing their jobs and any money from their parents they accepted. The loop hole was after staying 4 months together in the Valentine's isolated Alaskan cabin , they could get an annulment if they did not fall in love. The way things looked at the cabin they wouldn't need an annulment because they'd kill each other first. **Sexual situations within marriage.
This is the simple contemporary arranged marriage premise and abandoned in a well stocked cabin theme story. It was quite cute, but it read like a fanfic. the writing is simple and the characters, specifically the heroine, are one dimensional. I liked the hero, Ryan, who happens to be a virgin. He such a good guy, even if he's little bit of a coward. But Beth had this weird childish feminist/manhater, yet highly domestic thing going on. I just didn't like her.
The writing isn't quality, it did not sport spectacular wit or charm, but it made for a cute read that is quite irregular compared the other contemporary available. I guess, it could pass off as a harlequin if there was a pregnancy or sick family member. Mediocre read.
Ryan Jackson and Elizabeth/Beth Valentine are characters but they are also like a lot of other people who have spent their lives not really getting acquainted and not really understanding the other other than in superficial ways.
Having these two sent to a remote Alaskan wilderness area as unwilling newleyweds who neither are comfortable with the other nor really like them is a story that sounds like a true recipe for disaster.
For the first month and a half or so it really was but in true romance style the pair became friends once they opened up to each other and found common interests.
What is stale and boring to one reader was to this reader actually fun to see develop over the course of the story since I knew with no doubt that despite their awful beginning both Ryan and Beth would prove themselves as a worthy couple after all by books end.
I loved it. The plot was interesting and 99% clean. Ok, the criminals scene was unbelievable but the author took time to show the development of the main characters. Ryan's villain friends were a dash of reality. Sometimes people are mean and they stay mean even in our happily ever after.
What a precious story told by such a gifted writer! A well-developed plot moves this novel from an unusual setting in the Midwest to the wilds of Alaska. Unusual circumstances throw the main characters together in a sweet, adorable rendition telling how they go from enemies to sweethearts. Enjoy!
This book was great and the characters in it will keep you turning the pages until the end.I highly recommend anyone who loves to read to get this book you will truly enjoy it.
It took me a bunch of chapters to get into this book. Something clicked or changed, and the book was a good look at how men and women see each other, in ways, most people will understand.
Wow this book was so bad - I’m really surprised there are lots of positive reviews/ratings. The writing was TERRIBLE and so immature.
Elizabeth was uptight, anal, boring, and openly slut shamed women, obsessing over image & telling women to stop dressing inappropriately because “men are visual”. She’s supposed to be 27 & she’s one of the most “old lady” characters I’ve ever read - her shorts go down to her KNEES, excuse me? When was this written?
Ryan was less awful, but was immature, insecure, and lame. Ryan’s friends sucked; his date was a vapid, 2d, unrealistic, cardboard cutout poorly propped in place in her scene; their parents were crazy; and the whole forced marriage was super rushed, strange, & reeked of some weird spoiled rich kid bullshit.
There were multiple times I almost put it down as a DNF (& I skimmed major sections just to get through), but I happen to have a special fondness for enemies-to-lovers romances, so I kept trying to push through just to get to the HEA. Wasn’t worth it. Even their realizing of their feelings was underwhelming, poorly written, and anti-climatic.
I hate to be harsh about a writer, because like any creative, they put so much of themselves into the work & I always want them to succeed. But that being said, I never want to read anything by this author again - that is how lackluster, stilted, banal, naive, and awkward I found this writing to be. Aside from the “romance novel sex scene” parts, it felt like it was written by a child or a prudish old maid. No connection to reality.
Honestly, there was just so much wrong with this book...I’m so confused as to how it got published and has a 3.75 rating.
Arranged marriages, in a word, are so OLD-FASHION (mom and dad, I BEG of you, don’t get any ideas). Well, at least I thought so, I know who’d disagree with me; Elizabeth’s and Ryan’s parents. They thought it was the only way their adult children would find love and happiness. They didn’t agree with their parents. They kicked, screamed and argued. When they heard they’d both lose their jobs working for their parents’ company and be disowned, that quieted their protest. QUICK! The arrangement went something like this; they were to get married at the courthouse, and right after they would be flown off to Alaska, where they’d stay for four months at Mr. and Mrs. Valentine’s vacation cabin. During that time they were cut off from society, their only means of communicating was through letters which were collected every month. Talk about isolation, however, with a good friend I could so do this. Ryan and Elizabeth weren’t friends, they carried bad blood from their high school days. You wait until you find out the reason or dare I say persons who added the fuel to the fire. Living together proved challenging and to be honest I thought someone would return home suffering from bodily harm. All that bickering. I wanted this to work. Sighzzzz, I was rooting for them. Go Elizabeth and Ryan! Jeez, just fall in love already. I beg of thee. I fell in love with this book and perhaps the rest of Ms. Nordin’s work. I enjoyed reading this story, couldn’t get enough of it at one point. I’d recommend it to anyone. Wrap yourself in a blanket and cuddle up to this good book. Happy reading!
Such a sweet story! Ryan is one of those heroes who's sure to grace my day-dreams for a long time to come. He is a perfect mixture of vulnerability & determination, doubt and self-confidence. It seemed that Elizabeth was all that he needed to cover-up his insecurities and stand up for himself. While Elizabeth was facing all her demons on her own, she din't realize that maybe Ryan, the guy she claimed to hate the most, was the missing piece in her life....
Overall, a great read, although I felt that the part about Ryan's so-called best friends Zack and Ben was a tad bit lame. Ryan maybe a virgin but he definitely isn't a small kid who cannot differentiate between real friends and fakes. The sexual tension building between them was real slow and was beautifully worded by Ruth Ann Nordin. The emotional strings are also tugged hard throughout the story. Personally, I would rate this as one of Ruth's best works. While, the story does have it's own twist and turns, it definitely doesn't have any depressing drops or breaks in the plot. All in all, a great, breezy, sensuous read. Will recommend to any Romantic who is looking for something to rewind or de-stress.
With This Ring, I Thee Dread is a great comedy romance. Ryan Jackson, a successful advertising company was threatened to marry his nemesis, Elizabeth Valentine and spend four months honeymoon in a remote Alaskan cabin. Their parents believe that Ryan and Elizabeth would soon fall for each other by placing the two in a cabin alone.
I love the interaction between the characters, Ryan and Elizabeth. Most of them are cute and hilarious! I am glad that the characters’ relationship was not build on hot, steamy scene like I usually see in most books. But instead, I get to see lots of bickering between Ryan and Elizabeth (which is mostly funny) and see them to get to know each other through conversations. Through these conversations, the characters slowly changed as they begin to understand each other more.
Despite its not-so-attractive cover, With This Ring, I Thee Dread is a fun, light and cute read on arrange marriage. I really enjoy reading this a lot.
I'm a big fan of Ruth Ann Nordin's historical romances, both western and regency. But this being the first of her contemporary novels that I've read, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm glad to say that I was not disappointed.
Ryan and Beth have a few things in common, their extreme loathing of each other at the top of the list. They both come from wealthy families, both work for the family business, and neither wants to be poor, so their meddling parents decide to take matters into their own hands, and resolve a feud that's been going on since high school. There are two more things they have in common: they've both been told lies about the other, and they've both behaved badly because of those lies.
I enjoyed the story immensely, but would have liked to have seen the liars get their comeuppance.
What a cute story! Totally quick and easy read, but had great comedy and romance. I read a review of this book at Cheryl's Book Nook blog and thought it looked cute, so thanks, Cheryl, for that review. I read this book in one sitting and thouroughly enjoyed it.
I loved all the constant jabs between Ryan and Beth. It was comical! When it finally came down to finding out the truth about the other, I liked Ryan's analytical method. His making of lists, and writing down questions was intriguing and is something totally like me! I also like Ryan's sincerity when it came down to proving to Beth that he cared about her. Beth was the stubborn one, and I think the author did a great job of showing Ryan's ambition to break down those walls. Overall, cute read. Short and funny, but worth it!
This is the first e-book I've read by Ruth Ann Nordin, and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work. I totally enjoyed it. Unlike many romance novels today that are more soft core pornography, Ms. Nordin's books are sensitive well written stories with beautiful characters you can fall in love with, page by page, no padding needed. She had me hooked by the first chapter. As a self-published writer and editor of my own small press, I highly recommend "With This Ring I Thee Dread". It's romantic comedy at its best. Think Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves! Hint: Any Movie Producers out there? I give "With this Ring I Thee Dread" Five Well-Deserved Stars!
Loved this book the first few times I read it. Then read again in October 2021 & didn’t really feel the same. Okay. I partly reread it as I had read a book set in Alaska a while back, though it was also a romance so it didn’t really share much but the weather in that book.
Is Alaska really not colder in March? I don’t know, but seems odd as many of our worse storms have been in March in western NY…
March 29, 2024 - 2nd time reading this since Covid. I think we can all relate more to this since all those months of being alone with our families.
I just wanted a nice, sweet read again. A stranded with each other read.

"2.5 out of 5 stars. I like Ryan and Elizabeth as characters ... but as the story builds and levels off in the middle ... it kinda just doesn't go anywhere for a couple of chapters and gets boring .... then it rushes in the end. So, that just ruined the book for me. =0/
Maybe you like it better though .. you never know. *shrug*"
