Adrienne Dayton flees from an arranged marriage to a man who doesn't love her. In fact, she is convinced that no man will sincerely love her. So when she ends up in a small town with a group of men wanting to be with her, she seeks escape from their advances.
Caleb Olson, however, is intrigued by her and wonders what it will take to win her heart. When she offers to show him what romance is, he turns the tables on her. He'll be the one to romance her...until she agrees to marry him.
What's to say? I write a lot. I read often. I sleep little. Once in awhile, I've been known to clean the house. A number of kids live in my house and there's this guy they call dad and I call husband. All in all, it's a pretty good life. :-)
This was just plain bad. Bad writing and bad heroine. Hero got shot trying to save her yet she leaves him because he tried to get some inspiration for his play at the beginning of their acquaintance. She was deliberately a bitch towards the hero to begin with without any reason for it. She had no empathy for hero. Ever. So almost dying for her didn't prove his love. When the dying man had to travel all the away to her wedding to stop it, then she believes he proved his love! I mean WTF???!
There were times I felt the language was not time appropriate but overall it was a cute fun read. The ending tied up too neatly and conveniently which was a bit eye rolling.. but I was glad for the happy ending.
Book 4: Romancing Adrienne Trevor Lewis, younger brother to Sue Lewis Mitchell, is heading for New York to be a playwright. Adrienne Dayton is running from a marriage her father arranged and she does not want! When her father finds her on the train she makes a quick escape off the train but she trips on the way out. As she grabs for something to hold she ends up with Trevor in her grip and pulls him off the train with her. They had just been robbed on the train so they find themselves off the train with no money to get back on. The man at the train station offer to take them to his Inn and help them get jobs so they can earn their train fare since neither of them had their tickets with them. On top of everything else, Trevor's plays went flying when he fell off the train and Adrienne is rude and uncaring to him. They both form an instant dislike to each other. All the single men and women in town don't feel the same though. The train station worker offers to take them to his Inn and help them get jobs to earn their train fare since neither have their tickets.
It just ended at the good part. Trevor - going to NYC to be a playwright Adrienne - leaving San Francisco to NYC to escape an unwanted marriage A good story-line with an abrupt ending. Will they have a hea ? Who knows it's suggested but not an epilogue. My reasons posted under spoilers alert Ama
Spoilers alert: Some things too unrealistic to make it likeable or get attached to the story. 1st . After being on the train for 5 to 6 days and just after being robbed her dad shows up BUT that's not the real issue it's that she and Trevor fell off the train with out injuries, and the train conducted at the station is like " well you have to work Herr now" didn't offer any reparations from being robbed or falling off the train just weird. I'm skipping to my last reason He gets shot, then when she leaves, because she is all but-hurt over the latest play he wrote. He though still injured and weak takes a train to San Francisco and breaks up a wedding. ,Then her dad was like okay with it since out of the blue so was the other groom. Makes no sense. Also an implied double wedding the end. Literally that's how it ended. I'm glad I never read this series before her other ones, I would have missed out on some good stories. Don't let this detour you from reading her other stories, they may not be the most time period accurate but they are really good especially her regency stories and the Nebraska series.
I'm afraid I didn't enjoy this book as much as the other reviewers. I picked it up without noticing that it was by the same author as another book that I gave 1 star. This one is a bit better - I was actually able to finish it - so I've given it 2 stars. While the plot was interesting enough to keep me engaged (barely), the same problem as the first book kept me from enjoying it: the characters' thoughts and motivation are far too simple to be believable. Real people are complex. The level here is what you generally find in books for young readers.
My Amazon review: Can't really call it brain candy, either. / As I type this, I'm at least 2/3 through the kindle edition. The phrasing is clunky, and the dialog is worse than stilted. Even going by the standard of bodice-rippers, it's tedious. The only reason I'm finishing it is because I'm this far through it already, I might as well get my money's worth and slog to the end. It could do with a good go'round with an editor.
I do not completely like the way of writing. There is something with the characters too. For example, if Adrienne is the sort of person as she is described, even upset she would never laugh with someone, if by her fault he losed a month of work.
Not as enjoyable to me as the Nebraska series. Running away from an arranged marrige she pulls a complete stranger off the train and into an isolated town. Lots of I don't like her.... I do like her... I don't like her. Lots of match making but they are both good at it.
Funny romance done in the style of a corny western. I could almost see this filmed in black and white. This is clean light read for anyone just looking for a fun book. Great for young teens and up.
