This collection is not, as the name implies, an overview of the entire 20th century via architectural manifestos and the programs of different movements. The most recent extract is dated from 1963, which, to be fair to the editor, was only one year prior to the original publication of the collection.
However, as an overview of major European and some US-based architectural schools of thought from 1900 to 1960, it is a great introduction and overview.
To my senior year architecture professor: I'm sorry it took me 9.5 years to read the book you assigned for your class, even though I bought it promptly at the start of term (as the receipt I found in the front pages attests to). Until very recently, I was much better at buying books than actually reading them. I'm trying to be better now.
So fun~ somehow a little break from the chaos in the world Would recommend for any artist/ creative looking for inspiration. Though Many of these architects are aggressively mislead, they are so passionate and its very endearing in that way.
This is a wonderful little book contains a healthy collection of programs that might not be found elsewhere such as William Katavolos' 1960 "Organics". Don't get it to read what Corbusier or Mies laid down. You can get that anywhere. Get it to read Bruno Taut's 1920 "Down with seriousism!" Only covering up to 1963, it is more of an artifact, but still an enjoyable book to have laying around. Warning: Not meant to be read cover to cover - may cause irritability.
A concise and trim overview of architectural manifestoes from 1903 to 1963. Also has Sant'Elia/Marinetti's vivid and loud proclamation for a Futurist architecture, which is awesome and downright hilarious.
I didn't finish the last ten pages. It started off kind of interesting but I don't think it's meant to be read from page 1-completion as i was doing. It can get painful as architects really aren't the best writers (mhghm Buckminster Fuller...) I'm glad I own it thought for reference.
A good source for insight into the minds of many influential thinkers within and around architecture during the 20th century. Certainly an important foundation for further delving into architectural history and theory.
A collection of short pieces on architecture, planning, art, and related topics, written from 1900 to 1963. Originally in German, a concentration on German and European sources, though some US include FL Wright and Buckminster Fuller. Overall a 3; for me, some of the pieces were fives, some zeros, some in-between.
