Name (in native language) :

Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.

She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.

In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.

According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.

This was a reread before I start Vol 4 because it's been so long in between volumes that I forgot what happened. >_>

As a whole, the series shares a lot of similarities to Fruit Basket. A naive, innocent looking protagonist (Saku looks even younger than Tohru did.) with a cheerful, loving personality, who is supported by her two friends, one of whom is a protective ojousama. (But in Saku's case, the second friend is not a tomboy, but an actual boy.) Like Tohru, Saku lives with people who are not actually related to her. (Kaede, a stern and sarcastic, but ultimately loving twenty something.) And, as we find out in volume 3, like Tohru, Sakuya has a darker past, and hides substantial psychological pain and trama beneath her sunny smile.

Much of the action surrounds Chihiro, a mysterious boy who celebrates Saku's birthday with her, and then, in the grand tradition of shojo manga, appears as a transfer student to her school. Chihiro is the one person who really see Saku, and understands her, but when she goes to talk to him, she is brutally rebuffed. Chihiro has pitted himself against everyone in an effort to stay 'strong' believing that since you can't save anyone else from their pain, it's best to do nothing at all and stay as little involved as possible. But Saku, who has fallen for Chihiro, gets under his skin in a way he wasn't prepared for.

The thing I love best about Takaya's work is how deep and true she cuts to the emotional truths, to those issues we all have, be they self esteeem, or trusting other people, the way that casual cruelty and neglect and dislike leave their mark. Her characters are always flawed, but usually they recognize their own issues and try to work through them. The message always seems to be No, the world is not perfect and yes, people are cruel. But there's still people who are kind. As long as you don't lose hope, as long as you can keep moving forward, you'll meet those people.

The scenes of Saku trying so hard to be a daughter they will love, and getting cruelly, brutally rebuffed every time, are heartbreaking. She blames herself, asking, could she have done anything better, tried harder, been a better daughter, then maybe, maybe they would have loved her...

All Saku wants is to be loved by her father and her step-mother, and she tries, and tries and tries, and gets nothing. Chihiro is the first person who tells her, "You've been trying so hard, haven't you? Good for you." That's all she ever wanted, really.

"There are some people who you just can't get through to, no matter how hard you try." Chihiro tells her. "But some people, some people you can."

Classic Takaya-sensei... Saku is a sweet, gentle hearted character with terrible adults in her life.

I'm still not entirely invested in this series. Even after volume three, it's not very exciting and is following the same basic storytelling formatting as Fruits Basket. The characters are enjoyable and I'll keep reading. But so far, Twinkle Stars is nothing special.

This is a series that is slow to unfurl and reveal its secrets, but the process is emotional and raw.

I can't help but compare this a bit with Kare Kano - so this time we get into the actual angst behind Sakuya's past. The reason she was so depressed and is living with Kanade now. And it is much more realistic and depressing than the angst the hero of Kare Kano revealed during the second half of that series - which makes it more chilling to me than Furuba: because this sort of thing regularly happens in the real world.

The only magic in the twinkling stars is the way that Sakuya looks at them and the way she uses them to overcome her personal tragedy - it is self-evident that the few years she has had of living in Kanade have in no way hardened her heart to the casual bullying of classmates, and especially not the non-related person who takes the way her family treats her to extremes.

It makes me forgive the handwavy explanation which Chihiyo gives Kanade eventually about why he let himself be invited to Sakuya's birthday party in the first place, and we get the first clear hints that there is a regret in Chihiyo's past which makes him not want to look away from the way Sakuya is treated - even if it might open him to emotional pain (there's the nice understated way that Takaya makes his interior monologue show that he doesn't quite realise which kinds of signals he is sending out or that he is moved to open himself to possible emotional pain with regards to her out of more than just pity or good-fellowship).

Having read ahead somewhat in scanlations I am aware that we're still missing out on exploring Chihiyo's darkness and that the catharsis that Sakuya experiences in this volume is not the final overcoming of her problems, just a reprieve - Sakuya's loyal female friend has already organised information on his past which does not seem in the best of light.

It's not all dark ^^ - there's a lovely bit where Kanade and Chihiyo bond after his apology.

"Makanya, aku bilang aku nggak butuh anak!"

This is probably the most heart-wrenching volume. Of course, I have yet to read the others, but this one is just so intense. Poor poor Saku. She has so many reasons to break down and be depressed, but she still keeps on fighting. That's what I like about her. That's what I take from her.

"Even if it's hard, smile to keep on moving through difficulties"

This one's pretty sweet too with Chihiro and Kanade. <3
