Kaylee Jones is a trouble magnet. Chaos and disaster are her faithful companions. She belongs to the thin blue line protecting Earth from the Tai-Kok, alien predators who consider our world an all-you-can-eat banquet.
Her crappy luck puts her on the alien freaks- most wanted list and lands her in one of their prison cells. Her roommate? A very hungry vampire. Okay, Talree's really a Coletti Warlord who decides to make her his mate. Kaylee's definitely not willing but isn't strong enough to fight him off and now he owns her mind, body and soul.
She'll admit the sex is hot and the bossy jerk has agreed to save Earth from annihilation. The bad news is, Warlords aren't benevolent do-gooder types and there is a price for his help: the women of Earth.
And the really bad news is, Talrees' low-down conniving brother, Malik, has joined forces with the alien freaks and now Kaylee and Talree have to stop them from destroying both their worlds.
I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for thirty-one years and to keep insanity at bay, I took up writing. Not to worry. The insanity isn’t catching – much. Other than the addiction to chocolate and the twitch in my left eye, I’m good. I just finished, Stilettoes and Gunpowder book #3 in the Gemma Stone series.
I added this to my TBR pile because of the raving reviews. Frankly: I don't get the fuss. What was so great about it? It felt like the author was high as a kite one night and just decided to write down whatever popped into her mind and made it into this book.
The heroine is an immature, annoying, self assessed 'tough chick', who kept saying 'Omigod!' every other sentence. She happens to be the strongest psychic and telepath in the world, happens to come out of a family of warrior type men who happen to all be in high military positions and saving the planet. The hero is an uberpowerful vampire-like warrior. The hero and heroine and most of the secondaries are so strong mentally that they’re able to pop into each other’s head and communicate telepathically... It's all too much! There really is no room for nuances.
The story really didn't make much sense. I was confused half of the time where they were, why there were there and who they were fighting. Furthermore, the 'relationship' between the hero and heroine suffered from a complete lack of build up or tension. He starts communicating with her telepathically which pretty much entailed him growling in her head. And no, it isn’t as sexy as it might sound. Then he decides he wants her and must claim her so he first has sex with her ‘mentally’. And some pages later they have sex the normal way. And then the bond is formed so she wants him too. This all happens in between fighting for their lives and talking to baby spiders, and everybody and their mother who popped into their head.
I stopped at 2/3 of the book because I couldn’t take it anymore. 1,5 star
A great synopsis of this book is on Gail's page called Kaylee's Diary. This book has everything. It is very funny, has great sex and lots of adventure, lots of aliens both good and bad, some very cute. It is fast paced and very readable. If you like laughing out loud this is the book for you.
Oh good lord I laughed so hard at a few of the scenes. I nearly woke my sleeping husband up. Ms. Koger is definitely a must buy author. Her sense of humour is off the wall and just my kind. I bought this book a year ago and for some unknown reason, never read it. It's probably because it wasn't kinky sex - or what I consider kinky sex. After reading the 3rd book in this series, I went back to read this one.
Kaylee Jones is a walking trouble magnet. She should be locked up for other people's safety! I can't believe all the shit that happens to her. She's a walking cluster fuck. It's hilarious yet sad. It's funny because she gets into these crazy situations which will give everyone in her family white hairs. Or the males will go bald from pulling out all their hair. Ms. Koger creates a great kick ass female lead who won't let anything get her down. She will come up with ways to find a solution. What is sad about this story is why Kaylee is the way she is. These dangerous situations are common for those who have no reason to live. Essentially, Kaylee is committing suicide by placing herself in the worst situations. This is understandable and the underlying theme is very subtle. For me, it hurts to think about it. Ms. Koger doesn't beat the reader over the head with this heavy message. Instead, she creates a character who is in extreme denial while the rest of her family tries to get through to her.
Tarlee is a Coletti Warlord and he is in trouble - more than being eaten by his enemy or turned into a feral. He decides to mate Kaylee. Is he crazy? He can barely keep up with her shenanigans. The way she constantly saves his butt is definitely an ego crushing blow. This is because he comes from a culture where men are the warriors while women are protected. Well, females are treasured as breeding mares. He is an alpha male who is constantly trying not to spank his chosen mate. His method of punishment really isn't curtailing her misbehaviour. Honestly, constant screaming orgasms as punishment isn't going to be making me change my behaviour either.
Ms. Koger creates interesting characters. The alpha male who is always one step too late to save his chosen mate. The female warrior who is pint sized and packs a mean punch. I loved it!
The world building is great. I love space opera so this world filled with aliens and HUGE dicks is awesome. The fact that some of the dicks have tentacles - BONUS! What I'd really like to read, is a spin off book with Kaylee's cousin, Sam, mating with the alien who possesses a dick the size of a horse. Good lord almighty, how will that work? I'm also hoping Ms. Koger will kink up her stories with bondage and anal fucking. *please, pretty please?* Oh OH! And maybe some hard spanking? *bats eyes coquettishly at Ms. Koger*
It will be interesting to see if any of the human males will be featured in their own stories. Or perhaps they will be combined in an anthology with their own short story. This world is so rich with fascinating characters and aliens with a past. Ms. Koger needs to write faster. This is a book I will read over and over again. Put it on your "Bitch, buy this book now" shelf. Highly recommended to space opera readers who love a frustrated alpha male.
Who would think I would like a book with talking spiders who crawl in the heroine's hair and vampires with prehensile man bits? Damn. But I did!
This book is the definition of a dialogue driven novel. The vast majority of the action is shown through conversation between the characters.
Murphy's Law ran rampant in here. Everything that can possibly go wrong does, and even things you didn't know existed went wrong. Our heroine, the shit magnet, is a badass psychic. She can beat people up with her brain. Unless they sneak in there and growl apparently.
This is a first person tale that took me on a fun ride. I will read more. I was in the mood for a feel-good laugh out loud sexy ride. I got it here.
There were some times that the psychic mental dialogue made it hard to figure out who was talking. I think the author did a great job of giving each character their own mental voice, but all the talking did cause some chaos with the formatting.
Still will look for more by this author. Thanks for beating me into reading submission ladies. I should have listened to you sooner. 4 stars.
Now, anyone who knows me knows--I'm a big fan of vampires and Were's. I'm also an editor and do about a million other things besides. I'm always on a tight time schedule for something, so when I got this one for formatting, I did my usual stuff first, then started to proof...and promptly forgot what I was supposed to be doing and just read. And read and laughed and went OH! and met some people (and other sentient beings) that I really really really liked. I'm not going to give the plot away, nor am I going to say more than I have. But I'll tell you this...were something like the Tai'Kok to really come to Earth, THESE are the people I want on my side! (Not to mention Talree is just hot as...er...well, you get the idea!
Over-the-top, outlandish cornball action and dialogue that reminds me of the movie "Evil Dead". Except, of course, "Evil Dead" is a classic in the horror humor genre and this is not. The book reads like an acid trip cartoon Roadrunner episode, with non-stop action and dialogue that often defies the laws of gravity, common sense, and good grammatical structure. Having said all of that, however, I really enjoyed this book once I decided to just sit back and go with it. This book is not for everyone, but if you have an open mind, you may enjoy it. Also, for a quick read, if you like lots of brainless action that doesn't really make any sense, a kick-ass heroine who's also pretty brainless, then this one's got it for you.
I've had this series for a while and I hadn't read it yet because I was waiting on the 3rd to drop. I like to read books in a series one after the other. I've had a hard time here lately finding scfi series that are not all about sex. And this book really delivered it has a great story line and I couldn't put it down ! I have to say this is one of the Best Scfi books I have read in a long time !! You really have to pay attention to what your reading so you don't get lost. There is A LOT of mind talking/ blending and if your not careful you could get lost. There is soo much that happens in this book to even try to address it other then it has a lot of action, Comedy and of course the hot sex. I'm fixing to read the next book in the series.
I wasn't able to finish this book. The heroine is telepathic and so is everyone else in the story, so it quickly becomes very difficult to figure out what the hell is going on most of the time. The characters are very one-dimensional and the entire story is back to back action so you never really get to know any of the characters outside the heroine. Numerous words and phrases are heavily abused, such as 'Hoo-Ra!', and that obviously gets annoying too. There was a lot more that was wrong with this story and I just couldn't recommend it to anyone.
I started this series backwards and picked up Vexing Voss, which I really enjoyed. So went back and got the rest of the series.
I give this book a 4 star rating And here is why...
I liked the premise, Bad ass chick with mental abilities fighting for Earth's survival. Said bad ass chick starts being able to hear an alien male in her head and he locks on to her for potential mate material.
Kaylee is a kick ass chick with lots of moxie and a mouth on her, that she has not learned how to filter (I love her). Talree was suitably hot and scary, gruff but, lovable....did I say lovable, that is not exactly true but, there is something endearing about him.
Kaylee is in constant pearl and seems to be forever scrambling out of one situation after the next in the process saving the universe and collecting a motley crew of friends.
Sometimes I felt like a scene ended abruptly and we jumped to another scene making me feel like I missed something and had to catch up. But, overall I enjoyed the read and look forward to reading more about Kaylee's family.
I was really upset with this book. After reading the blurb I hoped it would be an action filled awesome sci-fi read, but it was nothing like that. All the talking in everyone's head was very confusing, the writing really wasn't my style at all, and everything happened within a couple pages so by the time you were getting into one bit of action, it was moving on to another. The romance was utterly confusing too. It was all a bit sudden, and I got sick of the line 'I quickly gave him the 411 on the situation.' It was like everything was on repeat, nothing new happened. The writing and heroine felt really immature, and all in all, it just wasn't my type of book.
The year is 2015. Earth has been invaded by the Tai-Kok who like to eat humans. The people have little to stop the Tai-Kok from destroying everything until they manage to bring down one of the alien ships. Their technology is quickly figured out so that those left can fight on equal footing.
Psychics are nicknamed Sirens because they can feel the aliens coming and send a warning to hide or fight. The Jones family is large and particularly gifted. Kaylee Lynn Jones is the most gifted Siren on the planet, able to detect the Tai-Kok before they even hit Earth’s atmosphere. Kayee is also a cop and a total trouble magnet according to her family. She can’t help it if chaos seems to follow in her wake.
For some time Kaylee has been psychically linked to a male somewhere out there in the stars. He insists that she belongs to him regardless of how Kaylee feels about the matter. The voice in her head has helped save her a few times, but Kaylee’s luck finally runs out and she is captured by the enemy who transports her to a ship hovering above the planet. There Kaylee meets her destiny in the form of a Coletti Warlord named Talree. Life will never be the same for Kaylee now that Talree has taken possession of her. Adventures await Kaylee and her bond mate, Talree, among the stars. There is no going back for Kaylee, ever.
Out of this world excitement, sexy moves and an unbelievable cast of characters can be found in Just My Luck. Told in first person style, Kaylee tells her story – the chaos, the conquests and finding the man of her dreams – when he’s not driving her nuts. Just My Luck is such an imaginative tale with strong characters, witty dialogue, and a very brisk pace. I fell in love with Kaylee and her beleaguered Talree, everyone is great in one way or another. The only down side for me is that Kaylee saves the day too much, it goes beyond believable by the end. Also, readers are taken to several different planets, locations, etc, I wish there had been a bit more description about where Kaylee was while she’s being warrior woman. But, bottom line, Just My Luck is incredibly fun to read.
> Hearts: 4.00 / 5 > > Review: > > Kaylee is a walking shit magnet; her words, not mine. If there is trouble or danger, she's usually sitting in the front row. But Kaylee is a warrior, a powerful psychic, and a "siren" for her world. Call her an advance warning system if you will. And her alarms are going off like crazy. Earth has come to the attention of off-planet predators who think we are mighty tasty, and they are ringing the dinner bell. Earth is fighting with all its' might and it's about to have company in that fight, whether they want it or not. > > Trapped and chained by his enemy, Talree is a Coletti Warlord who is on the verge of going feral. Think vampire on steroids with an insatiable appetite for whatever is in front of him. His race is also bent on destroying the predators currently chowing down on Earth. When his mind connects with Kaylee's and he sees his salvation, he vows he will connect with her and she will be his mate in all ways. Whether she wants to or not. And his kind will join in the fight with earth, but for a price. > > This was a freaky fantastic read. Tons of detail about what threatens Earth, in gory detail, and how seeing things can alter a persons perceptions. Kaylee and Talree got along like a chalkboard and fingernails at first, but with a lot of sex, arguing and humor, managed to find their way to one another. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story and sincerely hope there is more to come since all things weren't resolved.
This is not your serious read but rather an intense murphys law type of synopsis with a strong heroine whose lifestyle is whatever can go wrong does and a hero who learns that if you can't beat em join em. While some parts of this book push the button on believability and leaves me questioning these parts it's an action packed twist turner type of story. The use of thought projestion as a standarized use of communicating long distances with multiple life forms makes for hilarious results which was so central in the storyline. Ack Ack. I laughed harder with this book than I have in a long time. Serious romantic storyline it's not and I thank the author wholehardedly for that.
Awesome book and a awesome series.I love this series and I love this book it's funny and steamy. This book has a strong funny heroine and a steamyalpha hero. Earth has been attacked by really evil and nasty aliens and the humans fight back as good as we can. This book takes place some years later after the first attack. Kaylee Jones is a so called Siren. She has some psychic abilities which makes her and people like her the first defence line for earth (she can feel the evil aliens approach in space.) Kaylee is police officer so she's a woman who can take care of herself. Well the men around her don't think so, but she is going to prove them wrong.
Just My Luck had me captivated from the first paragraph. It is a fast paced, science fiction, action packed romance that was so up my alley. The story line and characters are well developed and I found myself unable to put the book down. I even read it a second time a week later because I just couldn't get it out of my head! That never happens! I simply can't wait for the secquel!
If you want to read a series about kick-ass heroines, this is it. The interaction between the heroines and their heroes is always interesting. It is worth the purchase. Lastly, I love a book that lets me laugh in enjoyment. And it makes sense.
I seem to be reading a completely different book here, as I read this book based on all the rave reviews it got.
I am basing my rating on what a 2* means - IT WAS OK.
I don't like giving books such a low rating but for this book I can't help but give it a 2*. Gail Koger is a very talented author because the world she created was really intriguing and the descriptions was very good.
However, Gail forget to bring romance to this book, it was COMPLETELY lacking and this was supposed to be a romance book!. I don't understand how Kaylee could fall in love with Talree as Talree was never there!. The entire book was about Kaylee and how awesome she is at fighting(she can best really big strong guys because she is a cop!), strategy, psychic & telepath. There was more of a connection between the father in law than with Talree the mate!
Did not like the whole sex thing. The first time Kaylee and Talree have sex it is mentally.....really!!! and to me it read more as rape than loving because Kaylee was supposed to be a virgin but Talree did not know that!!!. Let's not get me started on when Kaylee and Talree have sex and then everyone and I mean EVERYONE was in on it!!! just plan gross.
Everyone in this book spoke telepathically, which was really annoying. They kept jumping into different places I could not keep up. I was also a bit lost as to when Kaylee and Talree where actually together as Talree always seems to be some place else whenever Kaylee was in trouble ( which was ALL THE TIME!!!!)
I think Gail was trying to make Kaylee look and feel like the ultimate heroine who can do anything and be anyone - more like a Wonder Woman wannabe, but she fell very very very short on this and Kaylee just came across as annoying as she was always in a fight.
Kaylee's brother's where okay and so was the other secondary characters. I just could not get over the spider babies, come on!!!! REALLY!!!! and her bestie is the grandma - way too over the top for me to take this book seriously.
Will I continue the series, I don't know as this book is not making me want to go out there and read the next one.
Kaylee and Talree were my introduction to the amazing world building, and the amusing, funny, witty and hilarious dialogue Gail Koger writes. The best part of her books is this fantastic ability she has to make anything sound like the most fascinating action or object I have never seen - somehow she bring things to life in a way no other author can! The words bring these characters, whether humanoid or other shapes and sizes and styles so alive in my mind I feel as though I am there. With them. AMAZING!
And even though I would NOT want to live on Earth during or after the alien invasion and horrors that she describes, and I certainly do not have anything resembling any sort of psychic powers, I WANT TO BE KAYLEE (or her cousins)! Or any woman fortunate enough to have a Coletti Warlord make her the focus of his attention and attraction.
Kaylee and Talree make a charming, hilarious, couple who seem to play together as well as they fight (mostly others) together. Which is good because Kaylee attracts trouble like a super-charged magnet aimed at a pile of old, rusted metal - you know its gonna come fast and furious and not be pretty. And Lord knows what it's hiding that you have to deal with next. In the end you get a few scratches and maybe need a tetanus shot "just in case" but hey, that's one tiny corner of this planet-sized junk yard that has been cleared. NEXT!
I normally don’t write reviews. A quick comment or just give it a rating and move on. BUT….. I saw all the nonsense in the reviews and decided yeah why not.
I want to say Gail Koger is now my new guilty pleasure. Was this book like the usual sci-fi paranormal romances that I read? NOPE. It was laugh out loud funny, totally bizarre with a super snarky off the wall kick ass heroine. Many Alpha males and super cute awesome spiders… yeah who talk telepathically.
Thank you, Gail. Just thank you. I was smiling, laughing and shaking my head through most of it. Different is good. Same ole same ole gets boring and boring was something this book was not.
PS. It’s ok to rate a book bad, say it was lousy and talk of what you didn't like about it. But to carry on and on in numerous posts is kinda ridiculous and a tad overkill. JUST SAYIN!
Laugh out loud funny. (People kept looking at me funny while I was reading this book.) The snarky dialogue, kick ass heroine, sexy hero, and entertaining interaction with the alien life forms makes this book truly stand out. I have read some books with both humor and sex, but Ms Koger makes it all come together so effortlessly. The byplay between Kaylee and everybody else is hysterical but believable. Kaylee takes no stuff from the males she has to interact with (including her family). She is irreverent and spunky and a true warrior. This is the 1st book in the Coletti Warlords series and if you love a kick-ass heroine, snarky aliens and a sexy hero, you will love this book. Can’t wait for more Coletti Warlords from Gail Koger.
Just my Luck! I absolutely loved this book. Gail Koger has the best kick-ass (h's) around, they are hilarious, and the Warlords are soooo growly I love them. The more I read of Gail's work, the more I want to read about her Coletti warriors and their mates, it's and addiction I tell you (and I'm loving it). In Just My Luck, Kaylee Jones is wonderful, I want to be her, she is fearless and funny and I can't get enough of her antics. This book transports you into a world of fun and adventure that you won't want to end. Read this book you'll love the ride. Dear Ms Koger, please write faster. Can't wait for Reality Bites.
Just My Luck is on the top of my list as far as sci-fi novels. I was so into it, I finished reading in less than a week! Now my wife is half-way through, and she loves it!
Kaylee Jones is a trouble magnet. Chaos and disaster are her faithful companions. She belongs to the thin blue line protecting Earth from the Tai-Kok, alien predators who consider our world an all-you-can-eat banquet.

XD THIS BOOK CRACKED ME UP AND IN THE END LEFT ME BEGGING FOR MORE. CAN'T WAIT TO READ ABOUT SARAH, AND THE OTHER SISTERS(HOPEFULLY). AND I AM SO READING THE BOOK ON ZAREK AND DETJA! THIS BOOK IS FILLED WITH LAUGHTER(MOSTLY WHEN TALREE AND KAYLEE FIRST MEET-OR HOW THEY MET! DONT MISS OUT ON THAT!), ROMANCE, AN ALIEN LOOKING PENIS(LONG STORY), AND A KICK-ASS FEMALE WARRIOR. THIS BOOK HAS THE RIGHT KIND OF SPICE FOR AN ACTION AND ROMANCE BOOK! I LOVE HOW GAIL INTRODUCED CREATURES THAT OTHER AUTHORS HAVe NoT REALLY INTRODUCED BEFORE. THE ONLY THING I WOULD SAY GAIL SHOULD WORK ON IS HER BAD ASS WRITING. ITS GREAT, BUT THE THING IS ALL THE REPEAT WORDS AND ALL THAT MAKES ME KIND OF BORED AS I READ THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. OTHER THAN THAT THIS BOOK IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALIEN BOOKS I'VE EVER READ!!!!!5 STARS TO THIS BOOK! WARNING:DONT READ FORWARD, SPOILERS EVERYWHERESSSS. I LIKE TO JOT DOWN NOTES AND ALL THAT SO THAT I CAN GO BACK TO REFRESH MY MEMORY ON THE BOOK.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED/ _______________________________________________________________________ jake caleb and quinn are kaylee's 3 annoying brothers. tai-kok-alieans that feed off humans because their "yummy"....ughk
kaylee is about to go nuts! she has a crazy alien in her mind that likes her, and her brothers and uncle all can talk to her and harass her in her mind... at least she's one of the most powerful physcics and can summon animals to her at her will. ethan-kaylee's sister talree is a coletti warrior, and i literally cracked up when i first read how they meant...the book grabbed me right in when she was thrown in the cell, and he was just sitting in the corner and next thing she knew he was trying to get her and when he finally did, he drank her blood to turn her...i think. and the way the book described his penis...woah, what an image.... they described it as him havin nothing but a slit, but when he wants he can make his penis come out... trying to forget that bit of info from my mind...xI a price comes for the helps of the warlords though....females from kaylee's bloodline will be the pay to Talree's soldiers. Zzarek is ruler of warlords and talree's father... tae,Datlow-mates, and kids are spiders that kaylee meets and saves. Kaylee saves talree later on with the help of her brothers and families, but most importanly talree's father. i love bey the spider, he cracked me up so much reading about him. talree never told kaylee that he's turned her to coletti by feeding her...but now each day she's finding out, because she's changing..\ she gets mad at talree and is given one life cycle by zarek to accept what she is(With fangs and all-she's the first female to ever have fangs...cause only warriors have fangs), or else he'll do something along the lines of whipeing her mind// . the allaiance are coletti's enemies, but kaylee manages to make them form an alliance with each other to fight against malik and his tol-kok alien army. kaylee makes a deal with jubal the captain of this alien crew. they work for her and serve her if she wins, and if she doesnt win her fight against him she lets them go free. she wins. of course, and yet again shows off her skills and shoves her memories at people. when talree gets captured, she runs and meets this warrior dude who was fully nude and she had to climb him to unchain him. bad thing was, she felt his huge hard on(he seems to be enjoying her climbing up him).-one of my fav parts xD Tihar is that dude xD the cool thing was, he's immune to a spider's poisonous bite.what kind of species is he?? askole is his species, and he's way strong. love him!<3 if it wern't for talree i suggest him to be offered as a mate to kaylee. kaylee gets a tatto thats of great honor from tihar for saving him. only two coletti ever had that tatto given to them. now shes added to that list. i cracked up so much when her brothers and uncle and aunts and all were linked to her mind, and saw her doing you know what with talree. and then afterwards they were continuing where they left off, and walks in talree's father! detja is talree's badass mother. the overlord(zareak) is going to set a price for fighting lessons that kaylee is going to start teaching to her crew and other warriors. sariel is commander of akole. kaylee manages to win over a tatto from valderk's clan. there are invisible assasians named lotian asassians. tess sam casey and sarah are going to be given to coletti warrior males that zareak chooses. lilkee is talree's pathetic excuse of a sister.
Soon to be couples! Sam and Zandar(i would want to read about this couple)Zandar-head of clan Sobek Zandar also promises alliance with the overlord zarek. sarah and Tihar!!!! haha i so want to read this!octopus man and the physcic...wow what an image. as for the other sisters we just have to wait to find out!#323

It's got action, it's got humor, it's got powerful warriors and snarky women - I'm in!
FYI - the first two books are REALLY hard to find - copyright issues I believe - but you really can start with #3 Vexing Voss and not lose out. You will, however, pine for the first two...

I discovered this little gem after I read the third book, Vexing Voss, in the series and had such a blast that I wanted to go back to the beginning and get it all from the top. Seriously, these books are like biblio-crack. I am so hooked. They give me such a good laugh and are such fun and upbeat sci-fi whimsy. The books totally laugh at themselves and wink at the readers while inviting us to laugh with them.
The story is a parallel earth retelling of the experiences of a feisty female from a very psychically gifted family of humans who are all dedicated people either working for the military or law enforcement as they seek to keep the big baddies away. And when I say big bads, I'm referring to flesh eating aliens who have a thing for succulent humans. The TaiKok and their allies the Rodan are now ravaging earth and the humans are just barely surviving. Something's gotta give and Kaylee inadvertently becomes the catalyst.
Her powerful psychic ability has hooked an alien mind somewhere off planet who seems to think she's his. Somehow when Kaylee sets out to do some routine cop stuff she ends up taking on a Mexican gang, a shipload of Rodan, avoiding the ire of her many relations and lands herself smack dab in the very cell her scary alien psychic friend is occupying and oh wow, is he a vampire alien who wants her for a snack? Just all in a day of Kaylee's life.
And thus begins the further adventures of Kaylee 'Calamity' Jones who sets out with her Coletti Warlord, Talree, a few spidey friends and a big bad Askole male to keep the galaxy safe from a power-hungry group who will destroy everything in their path. In the middle of her busy schedule, she manages to discover what it is truly like to have a Coletti male claim her as mate and has to work to stay two steps ahead of his plans to tuck her away nice and safe from the action.
I freely admit that the story was all over the place at times just the way Kaylee was- rather spontaneous and in the moment, but that does not mean that there were no definable plot threads. Most of the time, I enjoy a tighter plot, but in this instance, this one worked for me because it was just all about the fun. Kaylee's exploits were most definitely over the top and she was freaky blessed with psychic-power and fighting ability along with a mouth that didn't quit. She was like a comic super-heroine without much depth to her character, but she isn't meant to either since its not that kind of story. I had a good time hitching a ride with her from cover to cover.
I got some inventive world building with the alien races and how they did things. I adored her little spider baby friends even though in real life I would have turned into a ninja commando if I had hairy spiders on or near me.
The alien loving sort of cracked me up. The description of Talree's equipment and Kaylee's reaction to him was more comic than romantic especially when she gave him a mental picture of her brother as a child and Talree got all smug about being so much more well-endowed than human males. The two getting together was almost an after thought half the time and Talree's way to get Kaylee compliant. The story is told all from Kaylee's perspective, but there were enough hints to believe that Talree really did care for Kaylee in his own stubborn alpha-male way and she sure enough cared about his motives for wanting her because she was falling for him too. It's what made the dynamics fun when she flouted him and freaked him out all the time when he found her in danger.
The secondary characters like Talree's father the big powerful Overlord was a fun addition along with all Kaylee's family chiming in through their mental link. The lead villain seems to be a good one to hate for what he's up to and how much misery he causes, but he wasn't really present most of the time. Kaylee and the other heroes had to mostly deal with his 'cannon fodder' henchmen to do his dirty work.
So, that leaves me just to say that I really want to read the Overlord's story and continue on with more from this series. I recommend this story and this series to those who enjoy light, fun swashbuckling-style Sci-Fi Romance with a spunky trouble-some heroine who manages to save the day between bouts of loving with her uber alpha warlord.
My thanks to the author for gifting me this copy for which I have gifted her with my honest thoughts on her book.
It's hard to say what exactly i think of this book, but i have to admit it was one of the most unique books i have read. The story is very fast paced, action scenes flowing one into the other, but i have to warn you that it is very violent, meaning, a lot of deaths, blood, cruelty and sadness, but at least all that it's not described in great detail. It's also not a very erotic book if you're hoping for that but for some reason the sex scenes were strangely appealing to me. The heroine is very loyal to the people she loves, tough, independent, almost foolishly courageous and doesn't flinch very easily when facing danger and extreme violence, because all the cruelty she has witnessed has toughened her up to it. Our hero is also very loyal to his family, clan and very protective, possessive and domineering towards the heroine in fact to such an extent that the word caveman (he even drags her by the hair in the beginning of the book) kept popping up in my mind. He's the type (the way his species are) who takes what he wants even it's without consent, which actually happens, because he mates with our heroine against her will and kind of forces his advances on her the first time they have sex. It is inbreed into him that females are supposed to be protected, sheltered and also respectful (especially towards men) and submissive, that's why they clash constantly, since she is very independent and wants to take care of herself. He never manages to tame her dough and i got the impression he liked her best this way even thought it tested his patience till the end of the book. I'd like it better if the worlds they were roaming through were described in more detail but i have to admit that i found the very different species they come across quite fascinating.
