The plan? Get some air. The reality? I witnessed a murder. The only thing I saw of the killers—their masks.

That's what I get for wandering off alone during the biggest party of the year. In Dusk Bay. A place known for its violent undercurrent.

Too scared to tell the police what I saw, I try to put it out of my mind. I almost succeed, until I meet three guys who turn my world upside down. By the time I see the mask that haunts my dreams, I'm in far too deep to get out.

Could our growing feelings for each other be enough to get past the things they've done, or will they drag me down into a dark world I can't escape?

**This is a reverse harem, mafia romance with mm and possessive alphaholes.**

Great read that left me wanting more

I really enjoyed diving into this new series. It's pretty fastpaced and quite easy to read. It left on a bit of a cliffhanger, but nothing I would consider a life or death situation if anything, it does make me want to find out more. I'll definitely continue the series and can't wait for the next book to release so we can see some more fleshing out of the characters, plot and relationships.

I needed something short and quick to read and this fit the bill. I actually, given the descriptors, was expecting this book to be spicier than it was, especially since it's novella length. Those usually end up being high spice, but this actually had a fair amount of plot. A quick plot (insta-lust too), but a plot nonetheless.

This is the first book I'm reading of these authors and this series felt like I got plopped into the middle of an already built world. You don't feel like you're missing anything, but you just feel like the couples mentioned that you missed their story in another series.

I don't really have any complaints about anyone in particular. It's your standard tropes for something like this, but the ONLY thing I didn't like is how in the world did Kennedy not connect the voices?! It's not like the mystery voice didn't speak to her a little bit too...and since she keeps dreaming about it...I don't get it. For a smart girl...she has some naivety issues too.

Otherwise, the end left on a cliffhanger you knew was coming at some point. For a quick read, I'd pick up book 2, but don't expect much from the overall story or connection to the characters.

I wanted to read this one for so long. And man I loved the premise of it, I was intrigued and all for it! How she was connected to the boys, I was there for it!
But then it moved too fast. Feelings and emotions were happening at a speed I did not agree with… I wish the story was slower for the depth the plot took.

"Bait" by Maggie Alabaster and Jo Bradley is a gripping, adrenaline-fueled ride through the dark underbelly of Dusk Bay, where danger lurks around every corner and secrets have deadly consequences. From the very first page, readers are plunged into a heart-pounding tale of murder, mystery, and forbidden romance that keeps them on the edge of their seats until the very end.

The story follows a young protagonist who unwittingly becomes entangled in a web of deceit and danger after witnessing a murder during a chaotic party in Dusk Bay. Faced with the terrifying reality of what she's seen, she finds herself unable to trust anyone, even the authorities. But when she crosses paths with three mysterious and alluring men, her world is turned upside down in ways she never could have imagined.

Alabaster and Bradley expertly craft a narrative filled with twists and turns, keeping readers guessing as they navigate the murky waters of deceit and betrayal. The chemistry between the protagonist and her three companions crackles with tension, adding a layer of intrigue to their complex relationships. As the stakes escalate and danger closes in, the question of whether love can conquer all becomes increasingly uncertain.

What sets "Bait" apart is its unflinching exploration of the darker aspects of romance and desire. The authors delve deep into themes of power, control, and obsession, delivering a story that is as thrilling as it is provocative. The inclusion of elements like reverse harem dynamics and possessive "alphaholes" adds an extra layer of intensity to the narrative, making it a must-read for fans of steamy, suspenseful romance.

"Bait" is a pulse-pounding rollercoaster of a read that will leave readers breathless and begging for more. With its gripping plot, well-drawn characters, and sizzling chemistry, it's a standout entry in the mafia romance genre. Alabaster and Bradley have crafted a tale that is as addictive as it is dangerous, promising an unforgettable reading experience for those brave enough to take the plunge into the shadows of Dusk Bay.

Kennedy Knight is over being at this masquerade party. Yes it is the biggest party of the year but she needs some air. Walking outside on the grounds of this estate she is shocked to find three masked men killing another party goer. Kennedy tries to run but they spot her before she gets away. She manages to hide but she is traumatized by what she saw. She has no proof of what happened and is scared the men will find her.

"We'll find you, little mouse. There's nowhere you can run and hide from us."

She just moved to Dusk Bay from Sydney and is still trying to adjust to her new life as her mother is getting married in a few weeks. She is having nightmares and is struggling with her situation. She is almost done with school and has been studying coding and cyber security. Her soon to be stepfather Leo seems ok but his son, Mannix is insufferable. Ice and Ace, Mannix's two best friends are almost as bad....well, not Ice. He is the only one who is friendly to her.

They spend most of their time giving Kennedy a hard time. One of her passions is gymnastics and she finds a local gym to join and starts working there coaching kids. It gets her out of the house and away from the guys. When her coworker hits on her, Mannix becomes possessive over her. Kennedy and Mannix/Ice start to grow closer together (Ace still wants nothing to do with her.) Kennedy feels like she is missing something. Clearly her soon to be stepfather and stepbrother are rich and connected to something....maybe illegal?

Everything seems to be going ok until someone follows her home and threatens her. Kennedy is on edge, but the guys react in a way that lets her know that they do care about her very much. Before they know it, the day of the wedding is here and that is when Keneddy finds something that terrifies her beyond belief.

This is a quick and spicy read with suspense and mystery woven into the story. I like that not all the guys are immediately obsessed with her, and it seems like they are going to have to work on building their relationships. It does end on a cliffhanger, so you are going to want to pick up book number 2!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the first book in the Dark Masque Series. This is the story of Kennedy. This book flew by for me and I don't know if it was just a shorter book or if I was so engrossed in it that it flew by. Kennedy is a shy innocent girl with quite the backbone, whose mom is getting married and that will make Kennedy have a step-family to get used to. However life is about to get a whole lot more interesting for her when she goes to the biggest party of the year in Dusk Bay. She should have known better to don a mask and attend this party. All she needed was some fresh air. But what she got was witnessing a murder where she saw one of the killers, well their tattoo's actually. Now she is two afraid to tell the police she decides to put it out of her mind. She has almost accomplished this feat when she meets three men. Mannix, Ice and Ares. All of them give off some serious psycho vibes but she can't help her attraction to them. This could lead to some of the best moments of her life. If only Ares would get with the program. Instead he is just well, Ares. You will see what I mean when you read the book. However they are all jealous, controlling alpha-holes. I have to quit talking about this book or I am going to tell you all about it. I thought this was a great beginning to this series. I can't wait to see what happens next and learn a whole lot more about Ares. I almost forgot her mom. I don't know if I am the only one who has this thought, but something is up with that woman and it cannot be good.

So this book was short and moved fast with the first two ML’s. I do have to talk about the flashbacks the FL constantly had. That whole plot point from where it began to where it ended in this book left me a bit disappointed. There was no real big conflict or antagonistic plot line that happened in this book and that’s a big reason it’s pongs we’re lost. I like drama no matter how short the book is.
The Main Leads
The FL(Kennedy)
So Kennedy was a decent character she didn’t seem to have much substance to her but, I guess that’s something we’ll see more of in the sequels. Again her traumatic plot device made her character look like a basic character.
ML 1(Mannix)
He was a plain character as well. His point of view was featured a lot and he didn’t really have much to say except heightening his own ego or dreaming about spicy time.
ML 2(Ice)
Y’all already know I love a crazy ML, they are always my favorite! He is unhinged but scenes where he is actually being that way we’re limited, wanted to see more from him or his backstory.
ML 3(Ares)
He’s the only one that is completely wrapped around the FL’s finger and he’s boring as a brick. He is described the most out of all the ML’s and they are outstanding descriptions. Want to see more of his background and a point of view.

Overall, the book was decent. Like stated earlier I wish the main traumatic plot point in this book could’ve moved a little faster. I didn’t need to read the entirety of the book to hit a climax (in quotations) to just have it be left on a cliffhanger.

Kennedy witnesses a murder. She doesn’t tell anyone, afraid for her life. Her mother is getting married and when she meets her step brother to be, she is very intrigued. Mannix and his best friends Ice and Ares are cocky, almost frightening to her. She soon becomes entangled with all three.

The authors did a great job of creating totally unlikeable characters. The men were nasty, overbearing, threatening, and extremely vain. Even Kennedy wasn’t exempt from dislike. She was totally clueless (by choice, I believe) about their true natures and gave herself to them, basically without a second thought. Ares may of been the most direct character. His seeming disdain for Kennedy was palpable but he still wanted her just as much as the other men.

Some subtext I’m not really clear on concerning the men and the authority figures in their lives. Are there more murders planned?

As you can probably tell, I didn’t like most of the characters in the story, however they were compelling and interesting to read. Well written. I love when an author (s) can make me feel such strong emotions about characters and love the storytelling without liking the people in it.
The book ends on a cliffhanger.

So, we kinda get dropped right into the middle of this world (there might be previous series about the brother that would explain more but I’m not sure) but I was okay with it because I didn’t feel like I was really lost even though this was kind of a darker/mafia romance. So, we meet Kennedy as she is moving into her new home with her mom who is getting married and meets her new step brother to be and his friends. And while they really start off as enemies/hate to love/love to hate, they quickly move into a relationship (this book is a quick read and the first in a trilogy). Well Ice and Mannix do - Ares is still firmly in the love to hate category in this book. It was refreshing in this book for Kennedy and her mom to have such a sweet relationship with each other (even if I don’t trust her mom - something seems off with her). For Kennedy specifically, I can’t put my finger on her. I find it hard to believe she doesn’t really understand the world she’s living in or if she is just playing at this and is leading on to more. So it will be interesting to see if Kennedy is as innocent as she makes herself out to be. Once all three start playing in the harem this is going to get GOOD.

This could have been a really great story had it been a full length novel and been fully fleshed out.

There was no relationship building at all and it wasn’t even instalove. It was “I saw her, she’s hot, she’s mine” and the FMC just goes along with it despite them having no chemistry, tension, or the characters knowing a single thing about one another.

The things the characters said and did also made no sense. Mannix kept being over the top possessive about people touching her, but then was perfectly fine sharing her with two of his friends? His friend beat him to taking her virginity and he’s not upset? No second thoughts even. She’s dating her step brother and not a single person has anything negative to say about it? They just accept it, including her step father and mother.

There’s no plot progression. The beginning of the book she witnesses a murder and she’s scared and by the end of the book it’s the same thing except one night someone followed her. That’s all that happened in 182 pages.

I was excited to read this book because the premise sounded really good but the writing and execution is greatly lacking. I will not be continuing the series.

Oh my!!! I absolutely loved this from start to finish....I love a good reverse harem story. I can't wait for the rest in this trilogy as we can guess that this one left on a cliffhanger!!! Kennedy Knight attends a masquerade party/ball and sees something she shouldn't ( a killing of a man by three masked men ) her presence is felt and seen by the men a threat was made to Kennedy and she manages to escape but this might stays with her.....who are these masked men? What did they want with the other man they killed?

Several months go by and Kennedy moves in with her Mum, her fiancé and his son Mannix. This is where we also meet his friends Area and Ice all three of them end up getting possessive of Kennedy. All three want her and they will have her!!! Oh gosh honestly the sex scenes in this were off the Richter scale hot 🥵 as said before this leaves on a cliffhanger and I can't wait for the next two books. If you love a good reverse harem / step brother and sister story then this is for you.

Bait is the 1st book in the Dark Masque series by the incredible Maggie Alabaster and Jo Bradley.  It is also my 1sy book by the pair,  and let me tell you, I will NEVER know why I waited so long! It was incredible.

Bait is very well written, the world building and character plots qnd development (even minor characters) is amazing.  I was hooked as soon as I started, and couldn't put it down!  Kennedy is your classic girl next door,  a best friend that you just want to do life with.

Kennedy was at the wrong place at the wrong time,  and is desperately trying to forget the past. She throws herself into her degree and life with her mother,  Helen,  who is planning to wed Leo Cassani.  Could his son, Mannix, and friends Ice and Ares be just what she needs to finally put the past behind her.  Or will her past and present colide and everything come crashing down.

By the end I was on the edge ofy seat,  and holding my breath!  I can't believe Bait is over,  I NEED to know what happens next!  Luckily the wait won't be too long. Book 2, Prey,  releases on July 6th.

Culpa mía fans will love this!!
"There's nothing wrong with asking for what you want. It's the best way to get what you want. If you want either of us, or Ares, tell us. The same way I tell you what I want. It saves a lot of time and bullshit."
this is the first book I’ve read by Jo Bradley and i am OBSESSED i don’t know what the author put in this book but it was a perfect escapism especially if you love over protective and possessive hero’s!! i could not put the book down and stayed up till 2 am reading. every time i think something is gonna happen the book does the exact opposite. felt like time flew by while i was reading and that ending makes me super excited for the next book!!
if you like reverse harems, mafia romance, mm, and the step brother trope obviously you should definitely add this to your tbr to fill the hole that culpa mía left(i didn’t read culpa mía but based off the movie this book had similar vibes) you should add this to your dark romance tbr list!!.

I'm not sure where to start with this book. It feels like I've been dropped in the middle of a shared universe with other book series by the author and I can see that from the Goodreads profile, but there is no mention of it in the synopsis.

It's set in Australia, which you don't find out till about a third of the way onto the book. The FMC is a virgin, which despite the way she thinks at the start of the book (sounds like she's far from a virgin), again you don't find out till later. And when she does have sex, there is zero mention from her or the guys about birth control.

This book felt like it was from a first time author as there didn't feel like the plot was fleshed out that well. The MMCs we are following are mid-tier wannabe gangsters who seem to answer to a whole bunch of people above them.

I'm only going to continue with the series as the books are pretty short and I'm mildly curious about how it's going to end up.

only made it to 2nd chapter & debating whether to continue to read

Thank goodness for Kindle Unlimited because I would be really unhappy if o had money for this book. The synopsis has great potential and the writer shows good potential for story development & character creation BUT the entire chapter so far is written in the past tense! As an avid reader & any Book Writing 101 will tell you, the way to capture the readers attention is to make them feel like they’re currently a spectator in the scenes and imagine it happening while it’s occurring. The way the author/writer is writing, it feels like she’s sitting in a chair across from you & telling you about a dream she had…I feel no connection at all! I can’t believe that a publisher didn’t tell this author to rewrite in the present tense! Highly recommend this writer rewrite this story in the present tense & I think you’ll get better reviews that are real & not paid for.

I'm uncertain how I discovered this book, but I'm grateful that I did. It follows Kennedy, whose mother is getting married, and her fiancé two sons. The youngest is drawn to Kennedy and so is his best friend, Ice. They decide to share her. The complication arises when Kennedy witnesses a murder, and now people are pursuing her, though she has no idea who the murderers are. She also hesitates to confide in anyone. Will she be able to forget what she saw, or will they find her?

I enjoyed the book, but it felt somewhat rushed. Furthermore, there was no exploration of the implications of the events. Additionally, the female protagonist relinquished her virginity to someone she had just agreed to be in a relationship with, despite their limited acquaintance.

This was so good I had this read in a couple of hours I couldn't put it down. This is the 1st book in the Dark Masque series and yep this took off from the first page up to that cliffhanger ending.
Kennedy just moved to Dusk Bay with her mom who's getting married to Leo Cassini and meets her new step brother Mannix, and from the looks of thing's she's getting his two best friends Issac (Ice) and Ares as well, but Ares is dragging his feet and not quiet ready to jump on the Kennedy train yet not like the other two, so it's going to be interesting in book 2 what happens next, because it looks like her nightmare from that night just came true. I know that's vague, but when you read it you'll know. This was so good definitely would recommend.

Dnf

New authors for me I think.
Started out really good but dnf'd after reading the step brother's inner monologue about killing another woman & how he felt bad about it because of how tight her p+ssy was.
Seriously, he's supposed to be 1 of the 3 main heroes that ends up with the FMC.

Also he's a dbag to her but secretly lusting after her, like most of his inner monologue was throat f+cking her & f+cking her, they legit just met.
Yet he's still a complete jetk to her & she's just like ok, i'll allow it, dont wanna rock the boat.

It didn't fill me with enough confidence that the mmc's would improve & that the fmc wouldn't turn into a big fat puddle for them at every turn.

When Kennedy witnesses a murder and is threatened into silence she does just that going on with her life ad suffering nightmares at night. when her and her mother mother movie in with her stepfather to be she meets Mannix, her new stepbrother and then his friends Ares and Ice. these men are possessive, devilish, dark and more and hiding a secret but what will it mean when Kennedy discovers it? ends in a cliff-hanger. well written engaging steamy dark themes, it only has Mannix and Kennedys POV so we miss on Ice and Ares which would be good to read more from in the futures books.

Typical RH. Nothing fancy.

Not bad. I've read better, I've read worse. Typical RH with one of the guys trying not to take what he wants.
New to the crime family, Kennedy had no clue what's going on. Which I'm guessing she's might have a clue but no. It even has her not really getting who her mother is at one point which makes me wonder.
Now I will give mad props to the writers.
Being a cringe family people are after them, yet who is against them, and who is with them. Two characters give me the vibe they are against this family, and it pulls you in more to know if your correct.
Also read three bonus scene offered at the end. It clears up some things.

This is the first in a new series. Kennedy moves to Dusk Bay when her mom gets married to Leo, who has a son Mannix, and his two best friends are Isaac / Ice and Ares. When Kennedy witnesses a murder, she could not identify the culprits, but she just saw a distinguished tattoo. Kennedy knows to whom the tattoos belong. This is a well written action-packed story, which is easy to read, with humor, witty banter, family, friendships, drama, emotions, chemistry, and is a tragic, twisted, unpredictable, and intense, reverse harem stepbrother romance, which ends in a cliffhanger.
I look forward to reading more from these talented authors’ whose work I highly recommend.

Bait is book 1 in the Dark Masque trilogy and does end on a cliffhanger. It’s a RH but the harem isn’t quite completely yet with one member fighting his feelings. It starts with Kennedy witnessing something she shouldn’t have and moving in with her mom, mom’s fiancé and soon to be step bro. Step bro has 2 hot friends, all seem very interested in Kennedy. Got some steamy bedroom scenes and a lot of mystery on what Kennedy’s boys actually do. Ends with Kennedy finding something and all the pieces start to fall together. Excited to see where this all takes us and ends.

Bait by Maggie Alabaster & Jo Bradley is the First book in the Dark Masque Series. This starts the story of Kennedy. Kennedy was at the wrong place and time because she witness a murder. Now, she is living in fear and if that isn't enough her mom has a new husband. Now Kennedy is moving in to his house with her mother. This is were she meets her new step-brother Mannix and his two friends Ice and Ares. This starts their story which does end with a cliffhanger. I can't wait to read more.

From the first chapter, this book got me hooked. I read this one in one sitting, just couldn’t put it down. And this is just the first book. I am already needing book two.
The characters had me intrigued. The three men were the absolute alphamen, but believe me, you will not like them in the beginning. And throughout the book… I can’t imagine that being easy to write such characters when you know that in some way your readers do have to like them at a certain point. But it made the book all the better. Only that cliffhanger had me grumbling.

Story 3.75⭐️ Spice 3🌶️
**Rating the series as a whole**
I enjoyed this series, but it could have been better. There were several inconsistencies, especially between books. For example, Mannix says his father doesn’t know about the virus, then in the next book Leo actually sent them. That is just one example, there were several similar instances. It made the books less cohesive. Overall, I enjoyed the premise of the series and the characters as well. I appreciate that the books are relatively short but they still get the point across.
