Sullivan completed his B.A. in English at Cornell University, studied linguistics at Germany's Heidelberg University, and earned an M.A. in German at the University of Oregon. In 1985 he backpacked 1000 miles across Oregon's wilderness. His journal of that adventure, "Listening for Coyote", topped the New York Times' year-end review of travel books and was chosen one of the 100 most significant books in Oregon history. Since then he has written many novels, hiking guidebooks, and historical works. His memoir, "Cabin Fever", describes the 25 summers he and his wife Janell spent building a log cabin by hand along a roadless river in the wilds of Oregon's Coast Range. Each summer he still lives and writes at the cabin. Sullivan reads in seven languages, plays the pipe organ, undertakes backcountry ski expeditions, and volunteers to support libraries.
Sullivan has the job I most want....sigh. Anyway, these are great little guide books to cool hikes in Oregon. His hand drawn maps are charming and fairly easy to follow. The black and white photographs from the hikes would be better in color...or so I thought until I realized that they are better enticements to actually go see the real thing as the b&w photos don't do the places justice. He's split Oregon into five sections, and each region is split further; including local info on where to stay, how to get there, and cool things to check out beside the hikes. Ace, really, and the appendix lists a hundred more hikes. Start walking.
I read the third (2009) edition of this book by veteran Oregon travel writer William L. Sullivan. The book provides many interesting details of hikes in the area from Long Beach, WA to Redwood National Park, CA. Many black and white photos, with several sections of color photos. Some very nice shots of Oregon lighthouses. A very handy guide for hikers or the Oregon Coast!
Good guidebook for the coast. Learned some history that was new to me, tried a restaurant that was great that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise, and discovered some new hikes we could do with our dogs.
Have visited the Oregon Coast 3 times and had this book 2 of them. Wish I'd had it earlier. All ranges of hikes, graphic trail map and a background blurb or more if the hike warrants it.
