The Strategic Teacher: Selecting the Right Research-Based Strategy for Every Lesson

Rate this book
Are you looking for high-impact, research-based strategies to transform your students into high-achieving and inspired learners? In The Strategic Teacher , you'll find a repertoire of strategies designed and proven to meet today's high standards and reach diverse learners. Twenty reliable, flexible strategies (along with dozens of variations) are organized into these groups of
*mastery style to emphasize the development of student memory;

*understanding style to expand students' capacities to reason and explain;

*self-expressive style to stimulate and nourish students' imaginations and creativity;

*interpersonal style to help students find meaning in the relationships they forge as partners and team members, united in the act of learning; and

*four-style strategies that integrate all four styles.
To guide teachers in delivering content to students, the authors started with the best research-based teaching and learning strategies and created a tool called the Strategic Dashboard. The dashboard provides information about each teaching strategy in a concise, visual profile; it is also designed to document how you incorporate current, highly respected research into your instructional plans. For each strategy, you'll find the following
*a brief introduction to the strategy;

*an example of a teacher using the strategy in the classroom;

*the research base supporting the strategy and how the strategy benefits students;

*how to implement the strategy using a list of clear steps;

*guidance through the planning process, providing steps, examples, and suggestions for designing superior lessons; and

*additional tools, strategies, and resources for adapting and expanding the use of each strategy.
The authors have combined their years of research and practice to deliver reliable, high-impact, flexible teaching and learning strategies grounded in current, highly regarded research to teachers at all levels of experience.

Four windows, Jigsaw and New American Lecture are new strategies that I absolutely love. This is a very helpful book, both for new and experienced teachers.

While this book is initially a beast to understand, once you have figured out the chart it all seems so logical.

It is lovely to have so many different teaching teaching methods grouped in one book. Even more amazing is that the methods are organized by how they would best maximize student mastery. For example, Direct Instruction(DI) is best used in introducing a concept along with skills necessary for understanding the concept. DI may be great for initial introduction, but it is neither helpful nor practical to continue Direct instruction on a skill that has already been introduced.

Instead, The Strategic Teacher has a graphic that points out other methods you may want to use to mix up instruction. Too much monotony is boring for teachers and students.

The only disappointment I found was some vague explanations of how to plan method that were unfamiliar to me. Of course a book with so many methods cannot be expected to have all of the minute details I wanted. At least I have a great foundation and know where to start looking for more information.

I really like this book because it gives us a practical understanding of what teachers already do on a regular basis but specifically defines teacher strategies and offers suggestions on how to extend methods of teaching to add more variety to a routine. It is very well organized and gives many examples from true accounts of authentic classroom activities to other activities suggested by the author's.

I cannot say enough great things about this book. It is loaded with strategies that can be used in every classroom. It has examples of how to use them, how to modify them, and gives the research the strategy is based on and why it works. This book should be used in every Education program in the country and every methods class. This is the best book I have ever read on classroom teaching strategies!
