Joshua: God's Warrior

Rate this book
Only human courage and divine miracles would win the Promised Land! As the sequel to Ellen Traylor's MOSES - THE DELIVERER, this book follows the Israelites' long journey to Canaan in a saga of intense drama. Having witnessed the plague on Pharaoh's cruel land, the delivering power of God, and the parting of the Red Sea, Joshua earns Moses' trust during the wilderness wanderings. In his last days, Moses appoints Joshua as his successor, a role in which Joshua's faithfulness and single-hearted devotion to God culminate in the miraculous victories that finally settle the children of Israel in their holy hand. Although Joshua is a man of bold spirit, he is also prone to the loneliness that goes with power. Never could he have imagined that with the conquest of Canaan his own heart would be conquered.

I read 75 pages of this book and I’ve decided to DNF it. I don’t like the writing style in here. This book is written in an episode format and I’m not feeling emotionally invested in this story. I’m not connecting with the Joshua and Moses in this book. I was enjoying this book when I started it but it isn’t holding my attention anymore. One detail that was changed that bothered me was calling the Red Sea the Reed Sea. I understand that some details of this story were changed to make it more interesting but for some reason when I saw that, it didn’t feel like the same Bible story that I’ve read and I felt disconnected from it. This was my first time reading a Biblical fiction book. I would rather read the story of Joshua in the Bible or maybe read a nonfiction book that explains what happened in the Bible story because I like this Bible story just the way it is and I want to understand it better. I don’t think Biblical fiction is for me but it might be perfect for people who find the regular Bible stories boring.

A fan of Traylor's historical biblical novels, like Song of Abraham, I was disappointed with this. Perhaps it's because it's been over 15 years since I last read one of her books and things change.

The episodic nature of the storytelling made it read like an extended biblical passage, which negates the reason for creating a biblical novel. This alienated me from a necessary emotional connection.

When it focused a few times on the internal battles of the characters, like Rahab, it was at its strongest.

I enjoy reading books that a give more dimension to people in the Bible. There are some interesting aspects of Joshua in this novel that I had not considered. This, however, is not one of Ms Traylor's better novels and much of the story revolves around Moses rather than Joshua.

The story of Joshua and his travels from Egypt to Jericho is inspiring. But, this story runs slow. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

I read Joshua, son of Nun by the same author. I assume this is the same book with a slightly different title.

she imagines the humanity of these biblical characters -- reminding me that they are just people.
