Gene R. Dark, son of baseball legend Alvin Dark, owns a construction company and is a graduate of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. His service in Vietnam earned him numerous awards, among them the Purple Heart. He lives in Lake Charles with his wife and family."

This memoir is not polished or poetic but it is direct both its brutality and in how Dark understood his emotions. He is not a deep man, but one with enough morality and empathy to be horrified by both what he did and what others, friend and foe, did around him. The honesty and directness makes this a good read for those interested in the subject and particularly for historians.
